Help! Please Find Me a Vacuum for My Elderly Mum!

Hi all, my Mum would like a new vacuum. She has no idea where to start, her last vacuum purchase was an Electrolux barrel in 1980. It's still going strong, but it is now too heavy for her to manoeuvre.

A Dyson is too heavy for her also, because she has arthritis and cannot grip her hand around the handle/heavy battery.

Any thoughts/leads? Open to both stick or barrel. Must be lightweight and work well with cat fur. Carpet and lino (regular pile, not shag). Her budget is up to $1000.

Thanks in advance 😊

Take her to the various electrical stores and see what's comfortable for her?

Then go and research the prices after

Another option, maybe a robot vac could be the way to go and save her the hassle? $1,000 would go a decent way to getting a good one which auto empties etc

      • Robot vacuum as above, and maybe one of the ultralight stick vacuums? Eg Samsung Jet

  • Weight isn't the only enemy for her, suction power can be an issue too with some carpets. Sometimes better with the power head.

  • I'd go to a store and let her have a play as mentioned earlier, do you know if she wants a stick vac or a plug in vacuum? If stick vac I'd probably look at something like the Miele Triflex, that way you can configure it so the bulk of the weight is positioned lower and not where your hand is.

What about a robot vacuum cleaner and maybe someone else just come around every now and then for a deeper clean?

  • Love that budget! I'd recommend bagged, with TurboTeQ head for carpet and mini TurboBrush for cat hair: Miele Complete C3

    • So poor lady can drag them around like in 80s ? Lol

      • The 85yo in my extended family prefers a barrel type cleaner as they’re much lighter than the old Electrolux, glide smoothly and only need to be dragged not lifted. I tried her with a power-drive Kirby upright but she didn’t rate it. She’s currently using a Lux Sora and all her home care workers love it.

        • Not every 85yo operates the same, good on your extended family member. Barrels are pain in the ass against stars and house with clutter.

          • @boomramada: What other options are there? Battery handheld are all too heavy and unsuited to pet hair. Uprights are only good for carpets.

            • @sumyungguy: I use uprights for carpets and tiles, they comes in different weights.

In addition to whatever vacuum cleaner you opt for, consider getting some in home help for her through some providers. They offer cleaning services & other household chores for elderly people. Or ask her extended family to help out once in a while.

  • Ducted.

Contact her local council and see if she is eligible for some home help due to her arthritis. If not, robot vacuum with auto empty.
