        • This part is confusing me:
"be currently employed as a Queensland apprentice (under a training contract) in an eligible construction-related apprenticeship qualification"

Seems to cut out anyone just interested in a career change? Or am I reading it wrong?

Edit: Oh… so you just need to seek out an apprenticeship first? It reads like applicants would already need to be an apprentice at this point in time.

@Gravy: You do an apprenticeship under a tradesman, you need to secure an apprenticeship then the employer will save on fees. You can't get this deal without first securing a position with an employer.

          • @Gravy: thats how I saw it….

Convincing an employer to employ someone who currently working in unrelated field is very hard unless you have mates in the industry.

It's almost like they're allergic to paying off their debt?

Jokes aside, these are good if you need a career as a trade. If you have an existing decent career, these are typically 4 year apprenticeships during which you'll be earning peanuts, so the opportunity costs can be huge. Just makes it a long term decision and commitment.

I thought it was paid for by the employer?

It is, but this makes it "free" to the employer (and hypothetically this may make them more inclined to put an apprentice on). I think most on Ozbargain don't understand how an apprenticeship works.

The good part about it is, its for over 25's only. So it's incentive to put a mature apprentice on over a much cheaper junior.

        • Good points

  • Been in retail my whole life, been thinking about a trade, same NSW doesn't have something like this.

  • Will people put on apprentices who are so old? Over 25?

I've done several quals and still no jobs. The education was free, and a waste of time. Employers won't hire ancient people.
The hard part is not the education, it's the age barrier. Need a quota to avoid this discrimination maybe :)

    • No.They won't unless they are desperate.

Are there any companies that are well-known for taking on mature-aged apprentices?

      • I have an HR license. I have not driven one in years and now working in an office job. It would be hard for me too.
