Cheap Video Camera

Hey OzBargainHunters

I'm looking for a good value video camera, just for doing things like recording myself doing gadget reviews on YouTube and the occasional home movie of the kids. Nothing too fancy, but still reliable with half decent image quality so it looks semi-professional and can go up to 1080 on youtube.

Any ideas? I'm great at knowing whats a good deal when it comes to computers and laptops, but when it comes to camera, video recorders and optics in general i got no idea. Maybe you can also explain some of the terminology. I know all about megapixels, framerates and resolution, but the rest, not so much; like whats a good optical / digital zoom? Hope you can help :)

Thanks,
Riczter

  • It might not be exactly what you're after but most DSLRs will record in 1080p now. They're quite a bit more expensive than a base model video camera, but they generally do a much better job due to how much bigger and better their sensors are than cheap video cameras, they have a lot more uses as well.

    • Only be aware that the sound quality isn't always the best, so it can be helpful to buy a microphone.

      • No on-board Mic will ever do your videos justice as it's just for convenience, a small shotgun mic with a decent dead-cat covering is a must if you're serious.

    • Most SLR/SLT that do Video will overheat after maybe 5-10mins of continuous recording.

However having said that, people serious about video will never shoot more than 5-10mins a scene, as you can edit the clips together to make a full-length piece.

  • Hmm, that's interesting, cheers for the info. Still think I'd rather go with a video camera than SLR.. What are the best brands and what brands are best to steer clear of? I'm guessing panasonic, and sony are good? And i saw one on CotD for $59, i think the brand was Otek - I'm guessing that's gonna be one to steer clear of? http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/smallfish_info.php?products_…

Any one seen any decent deals under $200?

  • I've quite happy with a Sony Bloggie Duo that I picked up at Big W on special for $120. It shoots full HD at 30 or 60 fps, 1080 or 720p, its quick and responsive and fits in a pocket. If you see that class of pocket HD camera from a name brand going cheap, don't dismiss them right away as they are often surprisingly good.
