Garmin Edge 840 Cycling Computer $549 (Was $749) Delivered @ Garmin

220

Cheapest ever so far. Been watching this come down slowly over the past month or so and I think it's probably bottomed out at $200 off.

  • Not a bad price.

    • Post a better price if you see it.

Cheers Op, paid $640 on eBay earlier in the year, will have to put in a price protection claim (28d).

Good computer, couldn't justify extra $300-400 for bigger screen (and solar).

May turn a few warnings off too, climb pro is cool, have loaded a few widgets as well

      • I got it for $500 delivered from the Odd Spoke on Ebay with a 22% off code.

        • Good work! That seems like quite a good store hey

          • @G-rig: Looks like they try to convey the LBS vibe

            • @Musiclover: True, I was wondering if it is a physical store..

Wow, great price! Got one for about $600(ish) a few months ago & felt like I got a bargain… :-)

Really love it. Touch screen works great. Multi-band GNSS picks up satellites in a flash, even in built-up/CBD areas. Took me a few rides to get the hang of the menus/options and customise - but now that I've got it locked in to my liking, its perfect.

Only downside for me initialling is everything is turned on in the options - so felt like the unit was beeping at me every 5 seconds (hill coming! corner coming! high traffic area coming! something random coming!). Drove me a bit crazy! But worked out how to switch them all off & only use the warnings I wanted, and now its a dream.

Glad I wasn't the only one who felt like I had to turn everything off. I felt a bit like a luddite feeling like I couldn't utilize all these features, but it was a bit too much for me

  • Would a Garmin forerunner watch show some of this data like total distance, average speed, current speed etc.

    • Yes and you can buy bike mounts for it rather than wear it on the wrist

    • +1

Yes, but the form factor/placement of a watch is not all that useful for cycling. If you only want to have post-ride data for analysis, then a watch is fine.

Yup, got it at that price last week. Winning!

    • thank you for this addition!!
      just bought this way

    • Showing OoS for me now

      • They only list a couple at a time. Watch it over the next couple of days and it will probably come back in stock.

    • Wow cheap. Wouldn't have a screen shot? May not need it but good to know. Vougy mine from that store originally too.
      Cheers

  • I'm holding out on a new model with an integrated light. Seems to be the next logical step to me. Atleast just a daytime light.

    • nah. i reckon next models will have amoled screen with a significantly reduced battery life

  • Not a direct comparison by any means but rather an FYI for those interested:
“Wahoo ELMNT Bolt v1” are going for $100-150 second hand on FB marketplace.

    • If you want to go absolute cheapest, you can buy the IGPsport BC105 from Aliexpress from around $40ish dollars. That's what I bought for myself.

    • Getting a bit old - it was released in March 2017

Wow, costs more than my bike.

  • I've gone from a Edge 510 in 2013, 520 in 2016, 530 in 2019-now.

Reckon I might wait for a Wahoo Element Bolt v3 when it finally comes out rather than an edge x40 or x50 series.

  • Coros Dura looks like it has potential for lower price point ($469) if you are interested in very long battery life and a) they can iron out the software issues/create functionality in the software eventually; and b) you're happy to leave the Garmin ecosystem.

Those who have the pace or other watches may be able to vouch for the stability of the coros platform. I'm still with team Garmin for now myself, but only because I have managed to pick up the watches at very steep discounts.

    • Interestingly, ccache.cc ( Sydney) website says they have it in stock currently.

it is targetted to match a 10xx class or maybe 8xx with solar.

I figure most fixes in their terrible routing, if you redly use that feature, will be software based, but since I don't need a bike computer immediately, I'll hedge and wait (Garmins are kind of hard to kill)

Wrist HRM , + without irritating cr2032 batteries, that bit I'm quite intersted in.

      • Interesting. Coros website suggests it's only shipping from 15 July….

        https://au.coros.com/dura

Sounds like they have an awful lot to work on before the routing is workable.

Puzzled why they try and rush a launch so prematurely. Anyone who buys one now is going to get a terrible experience. And may well impact on longer term sales. But definitely worth keeping an eye on.
