You'll need to monitor the salvage auctions. Lots of people doing this for a living so tough competition.

    • Can you suggest dome salvaged auction sites that are genuine

      • +1

They're generally not fake, you get to view your prospective purchase before buying.

        • Can you suggest few. i dont know any

@Dealfinderau: I'd say if you're unable to figure out who auctions repairable write-offs you're in way over your head. WOVRs demand highly competent automotive & body repair techs and expertise in regulatory approvals.

        • you just don't get to test drive or put them on a hoist

So… do you actually know what's involved in getting a WOVR/repairable car back on the road, or do you think you're just gonna grab some random spare panels off marketplace, smash them on and you're done?

To make it economically viable you typically have to do all the work yourself.

      • +3

Well this clearly demonstrates OP has NO IDEA what they are up to.

Go look for a decent car mate.

This is obviously not your game.

Someone has Ozbargain and Google search confused again.

      Ask Jeeves makes sense. Cheers.

O.P. needs to check Repairable written off car page on My Space.

        • +4

          They probably did. Keywords like:

          • Toyota
          • hybrid
          • Bargain
          • Insurance
          • Jinxed Vehicle (jv)

Would definitely direct them to ozbargain.

    • Thought was asking for gogglebox not bing.tv.dinner.winner

    • OP has repairable write off confused with a car these needs a "service"……..

There is a legal obligation to disclose if the car is a repaired write-off, just search Facebook marketplace/Gumtree/Carsales you will see the repaired ones as they write it in the description. Go in person to checkout the car and make them a substantially lower offer making reference to the repaired status hurting the value of the car more than they realise. If you use carsales it has a 'price history' thing that shows when people reduce price, if you find one that's been up there 6months+ you will have very good leverage as they no doubt want to be rid of it especially if there are 3-5 updates with reductions.

It's a legal obligation for dealers to disclose but not for private sellors (though many do). It will show up on a PPSR though.

      • In Victoria it is

If you wish to transfer a repairable write-off after it has been registered, you must complete an Application for Transfer of Registration [PDF 369 Kb] form, certifying that you have advised the buyer in writing that the vehicle is recorded on the written off vehicles register (WOVR).
        Registering a repairable write-off : VicRoads

I bought my car private from someone who told me it's in on the WOVR. It's been 7yrs of my ownership and I see this on the vicroads site

The WOVR includes any light vehicles (up to and including 4.5 tonnes gross vehicle mass, or GVM) and motorcycles that are less than 15 years old, which have been assessed as a write-off.

Since my car is over 15yrs old now does that mean it has been removed from WOVR and won't show on future PPSR?

        • I didn't realise it was different in Victoria.
          In Queensland…

Auction houses and motor dealers selling second-hand vehicles with a written-off classification must advise buyers that the vehicle is recorded on the written-off vehicle register as either a repairable or statutory write-off.

          https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/vehicle-safety/written-off-….

No matter what state, I believe it never gets removed from the WOVR, so the history is always there, but as the car gets older it's less of an issue for buyers.

Just dont. If you don't know where to start searching and arent doing the work yourself, you're in over your head.

Its getting harder to repair and reregister written off vehicles, especially in NSW.by the time you get it registered you'll have spent as much as one that hasn't been crashed.

    • +2

Sensible answer, but OP did not ask this.

Despite what you probably think, salvage vehicles are not sold for pennies on the dollar.
In fact even when doing most of the work yourself it barely makes it worth doing, especially considering you have no idea of the requirements to get it re registered.

I am unsure about NSW but in Vic you are required to create a log book of all repairs being made in accordance to the manufacturers specs, have a receipt for every part fitted including VIN number of donor vehicle for used parts, provide a report stating the airbag system is ok, the frame is ok etc, provide photos of the whole repair process.

Then you need to take it to get a VIV check which is $500+ where they verify everything, many people like yourself don't understand this process and repair the car without documenting it and are then unable to ever get the car registered.

You have no idea what you are doing, why do you think it's worth it?

    It’s ok, I’ll translate it…

“Hi, I am looking for a car so I can commit fraud by either rebirthing it or a stolen vehicle, or to repair as cheap as possible and sling it onto some unsuspecting sucker… can you help?”

Good luck finding a repairable write off in NSW and getting it repaired.

And I find it ironic that your search for “vehicle auctions Australia” on Google lead you to here…

In NSW, there is no such thing as a repairable write off, unless under very specific cases such as hail damage. To reregister a written off car will cost you a significant amount of time and money, with numerous hoops to jump through. Do not recommend.

  • Pickles?

  • Tell me you don't know what you're doing without telling me you don't know what you're doing

  • You get a repairable write-off in as it where is a condition, even if they don't have keys.

I do remember my garage mechanic was working on Avalon and trying to check what is needed and he was getting this car up to date over the days. He told me that he got this car for 5K and will spend around 3-4 K to get it perfect, re-register, and sell it back for 15K.

This was his side business to earn extra money and its a hit-and-miss.

  • I've looked at written off cars before but its just too risky money wise. Hidden damage can quickly add up decades ago you could pick them up cheap now the margins are tighter the cars tech is considerably more complex.

If this is just as a project to stick in the shed to fiddle with and you got it cheap yeah maybe . But if it could and most likely just a head ache.
