I wish we could just buy these games outright like you can with Xbox gamepass etc rather then having to rent them

Emulation. F’ Nintendo and their subpar subscription service.

I agree and all, and I know this isn't a proper solution, but take the 60 odd they charge a year for the N64 collection, and go buy an R36S or equivalent emulator console, load it with every Game Boy, Color, Advance, N64, and so on game you want, and call it a day.

I'd prefer it officially too, but it's never gonna happen. We managed to get GoldenEye 25 years later on Nintendo and Xbox and outside of owning Rare Replay digitally it's only available to be rented digitally.

Hell, (profanity) it, so long as we're moping, I fired up GTA4 on the Deck last night, game I've played a good dozen hours on on Steam over the last year or two, needed me to update their stupid Rockstar launcher (again), and then sign in (again), which needed an email verification I had to go grab my laptop for, all to play a game I legally bought, from over 15 (profanity) years ago. Know how I first played GTA4? On a mate's PS3, who didn't have internet at all, you put the disc in, it installed (or on 360, just put the disc in lol), and you played the (profanity) thing. No patch to remove songs, no online requirement bullshit, no stupid Social Club account and email verification crap no one asked for, you put the (profanity) game in and it worked. I'm a broken record, I know, and I'm part of the problem having been 95-98% digital for the last generation, but GTA last night really annoyed me.

Anyway, GoldenEye is great on Xbox and Switch, but Perfect Dark 360 is the only way to play it, soz boiz

      • I am still surprised well well they emulate goldeneye on a switch.

      • Of if you’ve got an Xbox One or Series just boot into Dev Mode and play them there.

        • I (profanity) love DM. Got a lil mini USB drive loaded with 50 odd PS2 greats, and a stack of Wii games (4 player Mario Kart on Xbox should be illegal), absolutely a selling point of the console at this point.

    • As long as you can still access it after they inevitably shut down the store in the future.

    • I agree.

Turok has had a re-release with the Nightdive Studio remaster which has gone on sale for $13.20 as a standalone buy. Without looking, I assume the NSO version is an emulated original version, so the Nightdive version might be the better one to play if you care about that game specifically.

For the majority of games, it would be great to see individual releases. Even better would be if they could throw a dozen or so on a cartridge as a compilation release.

nice. Nintendo online is getting better and better, its got all the games I love playing.

Yeah great, we can rent drip fed games that were mostly playable on Wii / Wii U for a monthly subscription.

  • Pretty sure these are all emulator games

    • That's because they are.

  • I find the addition of Turok on Nintendo Switch Online pointless since you can just get the remastered version on the Switch (or any other platform) which looks and runs better than the N64 original.

    • Nostalgia though

You're not wrong. My brother and I used to rent Turok, before we even had a 'controller pak' to save games, so we'd leave the N64 on all weekend. Rented it out a fair few weekends and we got pretty good at those first few levels.

        • Haha good times. Back in the day my brother saved up until he just had enough to buy a console bundled with a game. We ended up replaying the intro level like 5 times until he got paid again and could get a memory card

@alcadive: Before i had it on N64 I used to go to Big W every day after school for about an hour to play Zelda MM. Remember being 20 hours in and someone erasing the save file though.

            • @Dragonarian: That’s awesome. I still remember playing OoT for the first time at Kmart and not knowing how to get out of Kokiri Forest.

      • That is a fair point.

  • Nintendo drip feeding from their tit is pathetic. So many games they can make available but they don't.

Lots of grumbles and gripes about a subscription service that costs about just over a dollar a month per user if you are a true ozbargainer (8 account family plan - $110 annually)

get yourself an n64 controller and it is as close to the old days playing Goldeneye and Perfect Dark as you can get!

      get yourself an n64 controller

This is my main issue with emulation on other devices. Nothing matches the N64 controller layout. For most games it's okay, but Goldeneye and Perfect Dark I just can't get rid of the muscle memory from 25 years ago of the c buttons…

This is my main issue with emulation on other devices.

The Switch N64 controller is just a Bluetooth controller that works on any device that supports Bluetooth (hint: including those running emulators). Or you could get a N64 to USB adapter and use an original controller with an emulator.

Tell me again how the Switch is better?

        • I don't have a switch. I have a Wii with homebrew. not sure how well usb controllers work with the Wii.

      • Dunno, I loved playing Goldeneye on the Xbox controller last year with the Xbox release. Did make the game a fair bit easier than it used to be however.

    • -2

only a dollar a month per user… don't be trippin. If you want to play any of the games with a controller that it was built for and have an individual membership + expansion for the year its going to cost you $280 total just for 1 controller of each system with the membership.

      • And then you need a TV! And a house to put it in! In this economy?

    Perfect Dark!!! What a game

Hope the new one that’s coming lives up to the first

    • The Xbox 360 one wasn’t bad but it was nowhere near the original

      • The remaster or that prequel game that came out at the launch of the 360?
