Tyres I Need at Least 2, Better 4, WA

You know how it is. If you ask the mech, they say yeah the front (or back) should be done, but every place you go to says do all at once.

I know zero. What would you do?

Inspect the tyres myself, see how much tread is there while also taking into account what the mechanics said in terms of any issues other than wear. Tyres aren't an area to skimp on considering your life may rely on them.

Other option is to become a Bikie, then you'll only ever need 2.

  • The tread should be taller than a matchstick lying down in the grooves. You should also check this from the inside to out as the wear can vary. But agree with previous commenter, tyres are an area you don't want to skimp. And if you do get new tyres don't get some crappy knock offs.

  • The place selling you tyres will always try get you to buy 4. Do your own assessment and only get 2 if needed.

  • Depends on your vehicle… and the manufacturer's recommendation.

  • usually you'll only need to buy 3, as the 4th is free.. so just get 4

Depending on how worn are the tyres are?

If they are near EOL then better just to replace all 4 and be done with it.

This is an excellent point: replace your tires before End Of Life (and not after)

Tomorrow: what to do with the almost empty bottle of milk in the fridge door, and what it means for cereal over the next two days

  • There is a tyre tread marker you can check yourself - usually marked by a triangle on the sidewall.

If getting two, put the new tyres on the powered axle.

    • It's generally accepted best tyres should go on the rear regardless of drive type

No. Fronts do majority of turning and braking. Best tyres to front in all fwd/awd/4wd.

Most tyre and car makers recommend best on the rear, but what would they know?

        • Best on the rear no matter the drive type. So says Pirelli, Goodyear, Michelin, etc.

        • Agreed on the extra work fronts do but the advice to have best tyres on the rear is not designed to make your best tyres wear to the same point as the rear tyres. It's designed for safety. If you lose traction to the rear vs the front the potential dangers are different.

With this one simple trick you can save 25% on tyres.

Then double up by applying both this simple trick and using very good condition 16 year old tyres. Winning.

I went to Uniglobe in Canningvale, was already told my back 2 needed to change. I asked them if I needed to change the front ones, he looked at them and said no. $160 a tyre fitted (he didn't tell me the brand name) but its lasted pretty long with no issues, just drove in and they fitted and balanced on the spot. If you look on Facebook marketplace there's quite a few of those type of tyres shops, I remember one in Malaga that had pretty high google reviews.

    • Plus one for uniglobe. Might get 10ks less on the tyres but half the price of the bigger brand names, never had an issue otherwise with quality, on the road all day.

      • I don't think we hit 5ks combined on both cars a year so to us feels a bit much to spend $500 for branded. The newer car mow does need run flats though so not sure if brands matter for those..

  • I asked this question myself back in January (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/822160) and the collective wisdom was that it was better to replace all four. Note my car is AWD, not sure if that made a difference.

  • Looking at the replies, opinions on tyres? Ecopia okay? Anything to avoid by brand, etc?

I have a 2012 Camry that does very little kms, and most in town.

Does Bob Jane do alignment etc?

I'm going to head out this weekend and get it done.

    Thanks everyone!

    • what did you end up with OP?

      • I made an appt for Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus. My rear tyres were worn, not as bad as the front, but within another 5km to replacement. So, I decided to get the 4 for 3 & just have them all set. It's our family's only car so I want it as safe as it can be.

        • Awesome choice with the special - they last for ages and they're solid grippy tyres (usually you have to trade longevity vs grip)
