TPG Charges an Exit Fee

Just a warning TPG charged me $11.00 to port my phone number to a new provider.

I did not realise that was a thing. They also pay themselves from your debit a week before payment is due. Ripped me off last month by taking the funds before I could port out!

  • It's on their terms and I feel we'll known on OzBargain :)
They aren't doing anything dodgy charging it, just the only telco now doing it, that I am aware of. There used to be others (years ago).
So no, they haven't "ripped" you off, everything is above board.

    • Just because TPG haven't done anything illegal doesn't mean OP didn't get ripped off.

OP agreed to it while signing the terms. It's on their terms. But OP can fight if you have spare time.

        • Again, I'm not disputing the legality of TPG charging the money, I'm saying that out of every telco in Australia if TPG are the only one who charges this fee then I would consider that a "rip off." E.g. If you buy a phone from Gerry for $1000 but then walk into JB 10 minutes later and see the same phone for $800, you would probably consider yourself to have been "ripped off".

@jaejae69: Perhaps thats the standard fee port out but other teleco absorb it?

5.6. A fee will be charged by TPG to port the phone number to another carrier or carriage service
    provider.

Yes, that's what the T&Cs state.

Yeah TPG is dodgy as fork. They got in trouble a few years back with the ACCC for their "prepayment" that wasn't refundable

    Is that legal ?

It's worth checking with the TIO…

  • Nothing New, They charged me years ago.

  • It doesn't say specifically here but worth lodging an online enquiry and letting us know.

  • Terminate the number in order to not pay.

  • Exit fees are like the telco's way of implementing a public holiday surcharge.

ive used TPG for about 20 years now and i've got to say, the speed, price and connectivity is pretty consistently good, i don't understand why anyone would ever want to leave them

  • I admit I seldom read T&C. I have ported out of many telcos and never charged a fee. Honestly I don’t recall ever seeing T&C offered, may have overlooked it. But I still consider it a rip off.

  • Complain to TIO and get them refund. They will respond quickly.

  • OMG so dodgy. There's no mention of that on their website OR "Critical Information Summary"

How deep is it hidden in their stuff?
