Help Me Decide, New Graphic Card Now (Possible CPU Bottleneck?) or Later with New CPU & Mobo

I'm facing a dilemma and would appreciate your advice on making the right choice.

Current Setup:

Motherboard: MSI MPG X570 Gaming Edge Wifi
CPU: Ryzen 9 3900X (12 cores, 5 years old)
GPU: Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super 8GB
RAM: 16GB DDR4 3600
PSU: Corsair CX650M
I recently upgraded to an Alienware AW3423DWF monitor with a resolution of 3440x1440 and a refresh rate of 165Hz. I want to play all my games at the highest settings, but my current setup requires some compromises. Therefore, I'm considering a new GPU.

GPU Options:
I'm looking at GPUs ranging from the RX 7900 GRE to the RTX 4070 Ti Super / 4080, with a budget between $800 and $1400.

Main Concern:
I want to ensure the new GPU can handle everything at maximum (or near-maximum) settings at 3440x1440 resolution. Additionally, I want to avoid any bottleneck issues with my Ryzen 9 3900X CPU.

If upgrading the GPU isn't worthwhile with my current CPU, I might consider a full system upgrade next year. I'm also planning to switch to a Small Form Factor (SFF) case, so I need to choose a GPU that will fit in the new case.

    Upgrade to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D, you'll see significant FPS gains over your current CPU (both are AM4, no need for new mobo/RAM)

    Can probably flip both your 3900X and 2070 Super for a decent amount, and put those funds towards a new GPU too

      If you can flip your build as is, nothing like it.

      Use that money get a new pc build with 2024 specs.

      If you'd rather hold, I agree with Crispy's advice.

      The 5800X3D (which is still a beast for gaming) will only support DDR4 RAM. You'll need an AM5 Ryzen 7000 series (or Intel's equivalent) to use DDR5.

      Not really? I'd consider upping to 32GB RAM if you really need it and a 750W PSU depending on which GPU you choose, but even with just a CPU/GPU upgrade alone, your PC will handle newer AAA titles just fine.

      Look for the 5700X3D instead. Basically can have the same performance for cheaper.

    I think playing any graphically intensive games at 3440x1440 you're not going to be CPU bottlenecked at all, much better off upgrading the GPU.

      I wouldn't say no CPU bottle at all, but in most game where there's not too much AI or Simulation , it'll have little to no bottleneck.
      But some game will have a bit of trouble. Ymmv

      • Good to know, I heading toward a Radeon RX7900 GRE for the 16Gb Vram instead of a 4070 Super with "only" 12GB

  • Suggest going DDR5/AM5 setup, prices have dropped, its amazing say a AMD 7500F cpu and 6000mhz ddr5 ram pushes older Graphics Cards FPS much higher

    Have above with a gtx 1050 TI gpu, Fortnite on Nvidias performance mode, 3D setting at 100%, medium textures achieves peek tad over 500 FPS, yupz old game now not as intensive but still 500 FPS

    Edit: above is consider as entry budget system for the 7000 series too as using the budget mobo the AM5 DDR5 A620M-E mobo had for $130, 32gb ddr5 6000mhz around $150

      I have a similar system, thinking of going to 14th gen Intel i7 with a DDR4 motherboard. Prices are good right now. Have looked at some benchmarks and DDR4 vs DDR5 is around 9fps in most titles. Wouldn't recommend AMD as they don't have any DDR4 boards for the new generation CPUs and the price/performance is better on Intel CPUs right now.

        Whats the point of a platform upgrade and sticking with old ram. Also may as well got 13th gen instead of 14th, 14th gen has been having a lot of power issues recently due to it just being a 13th gen copy juiced as far as it can go. Personally running a 7800x3d and very happy running cool and quiet.

      • Just by numbers DDR4 RAM what max 4000mhz speeds vs DDR5 6000mhz or more, ram is one of the 3x most important components its buffer between cpu and gpu, well going by experience has been a boost for my older gpus in FPS well certainly in Nvidias performance mode, really comes down too games playing at what video settings but certainly on the far lower end of video settings my DDR5 setup has been a big boost, older games like Fortnite most people play who mostly after high FPS

        Dont know about other games, have tried Call Of Duty with my ddr5 above setup with a gtx 1050 ti, manages 105 FPS, not sure if that's good as I have no AM4 setup comparison to go by

        These nearly as fast as the I7-14th gen cpu and beats the 5800x3d

        Anyway pricing of ddr5 has fallen and bang for buck ddr5 is cheaper about $150 for 2x 16gb sticks @ 6000mhz, An AMD AM5 7500 cpu is around $250ish tray, budget mobos $130

        Edit: And all above is on the bottom scale of the 7000 series, being entry level budget stuff and still beats a lot of the higher end AM4/Intel/DDR4 stuff from previous generations

  • Since you're playing at a higher resolution games are more GPU than CPU limited, you'll be sweet with your current CPU. Once you go above 1080p the CPU limitation drops off a lot.

    • Dont know why youre being downvoted, while benchmarks might show a 7600x being 20% faster or what have you that's with no GPU bottleneck (RTX 4090 or equivalent). Real world playing at ultrawide they'd be much much better off investing in a decent GPU with a lot of VRAM.

      • it's not entirely true, because under 4k the fps may seems to be okay, but the frame pacing could be off due to CPU bottleneck.

        if you didn't understand what frame pacing means, below is a over exaggerated unrealistic example to demonstrate the problem:

        both 60fps:

        1. you see a new frame every 16.6ms

        2. you see a new frames in 1ms, then next frame came after 48ms, and this goes back and forth.

    For that budget, why not both? 7900 GRE + 5700x3d or 5800x3d

  • yeah big hesitation, either:
    - Only GPU (RX7900 GRE)
    - GPU + 5700X3D + 32GB DDR4 if CPU bottleneck (i already tried to add 16gb of same model but ran into instabillity, so I want to change to 2x16GB)
    - Only GPU now, and AM5 config next year in a small factor case, if I can run most game with current setup and new GPU
