Why do I want 2 more things that go down?

    • +21

I don't think the Lego Titan Submersible is out yet…

      • Just a bunch of studs.

      • +1

Colder than Titanic waters….still want one haha

      • +7

Titan submersible (RRP $299.99) will be free with purchase of Hindenburg ($999.99)

      ask your dad.

      • I asked their mum too. Just to be thorough

    • +1

Can you get the Columbia and Challenger Spaceshuttles as a duo?

      • +4

Yes but Columbia set is missing one tile.

  • +3

Serious question, do people really spend that much on Lego?

    • +28

They do. Lego wouldn’t be making these sets if they didn’t.

      • +1

I’m surprised Lego investment anime guy hasn’t chimed in yet

    • +13

I'll cop some of the haters… I will buy Lego if on sale. But I find that some of the stuff on Temu/AliExpress is as good quality as Lego. I got the titanic from there, paid about $180 instead of $999.

      • +1

Damn you! I just did some research into this copy Lego and now I’m very interested in getting some. Going to have to buy a real Lego house to fit it all in lol. 😀

      • +16

You do know that is piracy, and sending money to a country that only knows copying and stealing.

        • +9

Who cares, clearly lego are ripping everyone off.

          • +7

@Buyingcrap: I hope your mind set is a minority or we will have no innovation.

If you think they are ripping you off then just don't buy it. Supporting criminals is not the way to go.

            • +17

@syswong: Why don't Lego sell for cheaper and stop retiring sets? The answer is easy, they try their best to create artificial scarcity and a culture of FOMO. You can choose to buy into that or you can look at alternatives.

              • +4

@Trippelsewe: No different to Air Jordans, comic books, or any other collectable.

I don't have any problem with 'fake' lego as long as it isn't trying to claim it is real lego and counterfeit their products.

There is a difference between fake LV handbags and Rolex watches, and 'homages' that clearly aren't the same brand.

              • +4

@Trippelsewe: Why don't Ferrari sell for cheaper and stop retiring older models?

              • +1

@Trippelsewe: You think they can continue, from a tooling (manufacturing) point of view to make every part indefinitely? You've never worked in manufacturing.

You think licensing agreements don't run out?
You think you'll get the same selection if they don't retire stuff?
You think it'll be available in stores with limited shelf space?
You think it'll be available for distribution even from a warehouse? Do you know how many sets there are at all? Rofl
When would they improve sets for new build techniques?

I'm against Lego pricing, it's ridiculous, but your argument holds no water whatsoever

            • +3

@syswong: Lego should innovate a way to make plastic bricks cheaper.

            • +2

@syswong: I guess u wouldn’t like everyone just downloading movies instead of paying Netflix then?

            • @syswong: The country which "only knows copying and stealing" is already ahead in innovation and science. Their tech already dominated, and in the future everyone will be driving their EVs. How does that make you feel?

          • @Buyingcrap: I still don't think that's justification to support a country that has basically created a global culture of cheap and crappy throwaway products, although I agree lego is quite expensive.

        • +7

It's little plastic bricks that have been around for decades.

If anything it's ridiculous you can get a patent for that long. That's the main issue here that stifles innovation, creativity and competition.

        • +1

“ a country that only knows copying and stealing.”

          That was the deal!

          https://youtu.be/r6i5qVbL2ys?si=It8J63JfK9LABtuh

        • +3

"country that only knows copying and stealing" * ——> the cccp…..

        • +2

I agree with you re copying of the actual item (i.e. titanic). The Lego patent on the building block ended in 1978, so is it still "piracy"?

        • +2

Kind of? LEGO's patents expired many years ago. Anyone is free to manufacture LEGO compatible pieces.

I guess the protected IP is the design?

          • +1

@GreenLego: Yet they put the blueprints for that design on the web…. in the form of the booklet to make the set.

      • +4

I'm similar but I only buy fake lego (Flego) sets for lego sets that have retired. Some of the retired set prices are crazy.
Also worth nothing that genuine Lego has a decent resale value, even for pre-built sets. Flego does not.

        • +3

I'm heading in the other direction now. I started out purchasing cheap aliexpress fakes - it was okay for a while to build. You'd find the occasional busted piece, and the build strength/quality just isn't the same. Don't even get me started on minifig paint quality.

Then over the years of collecting actual LEGO with my kids - thanks OB for never having to pay RRP! - I kinda loathe the knock-off stuff now. I don't let it anywhere near the LEGO, and it mostly sits unbuilt since we moved house.

      • +6

The quality is much lower in most sets. The bigger bricks are similar but for the small parts everything is too loose or too tight.

      • Give us the links man!! Anything gaming/Nintendo looking???

      • I don't buy sets but Chinese minifigs for $1 a piece are absolutely worth it. The range is huge for both replicas and non replicas

      • Can you link the one you got? I've been looking for one for a while but I have no idea which one to go with.

        • I’ve got a decent Lego collection and used to hate on the knockoffs, but since having kids turned to the dark side for a couple of things. Since we have heaps of blocks to build with I get “licensed” minifigs (sonic, Mario, nba, etc). Also the technic style like 1:14 LaNborghini for ~$25 have been surprisingly good. Parts still stay separate though

        • FANTASTIC TOYS SPACE on Temu is where i got it from. Seems to be in and out of stock.

      • When I buy Lego, I know I will be able to sell the set in a couple of years for what I paid, maybe even profit. (after having built it)

      • I’ll buy the Titanic for $180. Is it good quality? Link?

    • +4

What do you spend your money on for fun?

    • +1

My boss does, he owns this piece too and it's pretty cool to see in person

    • -8

You can get exact copy replicas from China for 1/5th the price. Lego does its best to create artificial scarcity for what is at the end of the day mass produced plastic that costs peanuts to make. People buy into this FOMO but if you're smart you'd look at lego compatibles.

      • +3

Lego is a brand just like Prada or Versace. You can go to a local market and get a knock off Gucci handbag for $10 which noone but you will know it's a knock off. So why do people spend money for the real thing?
Because of the knowledge of it being the original product and all the extra components to that; The brand, the originality, the integrity.
Also for collectors good luck finding a resale market for Legschuan vs. Lego.

        • +4

It's injection moulded mass produced plastic, not some crafted item.

          • +1

@Trippelsewe: Pokemon Cards are mass produced cardboard. But let's see the secondary market for sechuanemon cards compared to the branded ones.

          • @Trippelsewe:

It's injection moulded mass produced plastic, not some crafted item

Actually my experience with the knock-offs revealed quite the opposite: LEGO's quality and accuracy in machining is very evident once you've built a few fakes. The very feel of the plastic is different, let alone tolerances that affect fit and sturdiness.

After years of regularly sorting through tubs of LEGO at places like BrickResales, I'm fairly quick to identify fakes by look and feel nowadays.

That said, don't look at me to defend just how much more expensive LEGO is…

        • You can go to a local market and get a knock off Gucci handbag for $10 which noone but you will know it's a knock off.

Although there are some very good fakes getting around, its always possible to weed out the fakes. even if you can't, 3 months of use will show it anyway.

      • +1

What do you mean artificial scarcity? They can keep producing old sets forever, demand will drop and storage costs, etc will rise to make it uneconomical.

          • can't
    • -5

Seems crazy to me that people spend this amount of money on LEGO.
There has to be better ways of spending your cash.

Surely we have hit Beanie Babies level of hype on investing now?

      • +1

I’ve been collecting Lego sets for about 25 years now. I don’t open them anymore as I’ve run out room for the last 15 years now lol some have become quite the collectors items

        • so the challenge is when do you cash in before the market crashes!

      • Interestingly in the last 35 years lego has outperformed large stocks, bonds and gold with an average return of 10% annually

        • +1

Given it is a physical product, are you including storage, insurance, postage, dodgy buyer headaches, seller fees, non-liquid market (you can't readily move large volumes unlike say, securities).

I have a ton of lego, more than most I'd say, and I can tell you it's easier to buy something than to sell it.

    • +2

Yes.. people enjoy doing things.. and spending money on it. Shocker.

  • -4

I’m surprised nobody’s chimed in with this yet:

Hey OP - store name in the title, please.

  • Don't forget AG Lego cashback with Shopback. It works for promos like this.

    • I’m on the shopback app and the concord doesn’t show up. It shows up the moving truck deal though

      • It's got nothing to do with deals. It's just standard cashback…….

        • Oh ok thanks. I have no now idea how they work. Only just signed up now

  • +3

Damn that’s actually pretty good but I already have the concord from the Myer deal the other week otherwise I would have considered this! Bummer ☹️

  • I. must. resist…..

  • Elemental: I just take the free Concorde. Thank you.

  • +3

    Concorde not Concord

  • Ah shit. Went in with my old man yesterday and he bought one as a retirement present

    • +1

Return it, buy it again using this?

      • +7

Had already opened it so if they wanted to I'm sure they could have denied me but the legends at the Karrinyup store "returned it" and put through the sale again with the free Concorde!

        • +1

          Score. Good customer service.

          • +1

@try2bhelpful: Absolutely stoked with the result. Team at Karrinyup were fantastic for this.

  • Anyone in vic selling concord for half the price $150-200?

    • One way tickets are usually more than half the price ;)

    • You won't have much luck. Its a set that goes out of stock due to popularity quite regularly

    • Yeah good luck with that. $250 at best if someone wants to get rid of it ASAP. Expect the full price $300 even on marketplace.

    • Open and built are selling for $200..
Average selling price on eBay is $350
There's 3 new on Marketplace right now for $250, won't get it much cheaper really

  • DingoBilly 7 hours 20 min ago "It's little plastic bricks that have been around for decades."
When will Lego ever be called out for this plastic that has a half life of Uranium?

    • +1

When will Lego ever be called out for this plastic that has a half life of Uranium?

Yeah, but how many people bin their Lego? There's an active 2nd hand market for it.

    • maybe because it doesn't have "a half life of Uranium" aye

  • Is there a safe way to sell unopened sets without being scammed or ppl wasting your time on market place?

    • bricklink

    • I have been buying Lego from fb marketplace and always do pick up and transfer on the spot. Maybe you can try to sell and get someone to do pick up at your place or public space. Check their profile as well. Red flag when their account is only recently created.
