(VIC) Do You Have Old Computer Equipment You No Longer Need??

I am posting this message on behalf of a friend's son.

You can also listen to Simon Allen talking about this project on ABC Radio recently at the following link -

Computers for a Cause

Do your bit to save the planet; help a cancer charity; score some hardware at half the price you would pay on eBay; and get a tax deduction. Too good to be true? No, it’s a win for everybody.

Computers for a Cause is a local initiative in Wangaratta and Melbourne, acting primarily to raise funds for the Cancer Council via the Shitbox Rally teams "Drambusters" and "Tour de Frank".

People can donate old computer hardware that would otherwise end up in landfill (donation places in Melbourne (East Brunswick) and Wangaratta). The team cleans them up and gets them working, donating all of their time. They put them up on the website where they can be purchased for around half the cost of a similar item on eBay. The item is paid for by the purchaser making a donation to the Cancer Council, no cash changes hands. On proof of donation, the hardware is handed over. (Of course you could just make a donation via the rally pages too and just get a good feeling rather than some cheap hardware.)

All the information is at the web site https://www.computersforacause.charity/

Please note:

Hardware donations only in Brunswick East, Wangaratta (and Bendigo but see website).
Hardware collection only from Wangaratta (or arrange courier at your expense)
No cash changes hands
All donations to the Cancer Council which are tax deductible

  • Awesome 👍

Shitbox rally seems like a hoot. Added to bucket list.

To drive cars worth just $1,500 across Australia via some of its most formidable roads, all in the name of charity.

I've already found my entry car. No imperfections listed. She's perfect.

    • Nice.
There’s also the postie bike challenge which looks fun.

      • Yeah. @pegaxs posted about that a while back and immediately added that to my list.

I thought it was the Postie GP I posted about? They run a GP road course around the backstreets of Cessnock every November. 100% worth going to watch. These guys ride just as hard as any of the superbike guys and it’s super fun the watch.

@pegaxs: AP GP makes sense. Cheers

I got my CT110 events all muddled up.

@Muzeeb: The “postie bike challenge” is a charity event that basically anyone with a license and a bike can get into. Almost pulled the trigger on that event a heap of times. Maybe we should get an OzBargain team one year and get at it.

The Postie GP is a bit harder to get into. They have limited spots for racers and you need to have some sort of racing license and/or some racing form to even get a sniff at that race.

Have prepped a few cars for the “Kidney Car Rally” as well over the years… so, if you need some tips and tricks, let me know. And your “candidate” car looks perfect!

Shitbox rally seems like a hoot.

Can confirm; I’ve done the sister mystery box rally and it was an awesome experience. In this one, you use your fundraising to bid on junkers provided by pickles.

      Thanks for sharing OP

I have never known ewaste to end up in landfill. Plenty of charities and businesses making buck pulling the things apart and selling the components and metals while the rest is recycled.

The only bad part about it all is stupid people dumping vintage machines which are rare and would fetch $$$ 🤦‍♀️

    • So because you haven't personally experienced it, it doesn't exist?

"It is literally impossible for my observations to be wrong"

    • I have never known ewaste to end up in landfill

Considering ewaste is only a new thing in the big picture, most people continue to dump broken ewaste into the bin, just like they dump batteries into the bin as well.

  • People can donate old computer hardware that would otherwise end up in landfill

Great cause, wish they had a few more places to drop off as Brunswick East is a long way from most.

Do you know what the hours for drop off are? Can't see them on the page, got some stuff I can drop off if they are open when I head that way.

BTW it is technically illegal to dump ewaste into landfill now days, so it should be dropped at a ewaste recycler or a place like this.

    • Will check the hours for drop off.

    • Hours for Brunswick are:-

      7am - 3pm Mon-Fri
      8am -3pm Sat-Sun

Thank you for your contribution to the cause.

      • Thank you!!!

Good to see they are open on the weekend. Might do a weekend run if that is the case!
