Got last years model a month ago for $82 or something after cashback:

Deal online was sold out, but was still a bunch in store for $99 last time I went into a store (a couple weeks ago), so worth checking. Only navy from memory.

I only had a quick look, and couldn't see any easily identifiable differences between this years and last years models…so whether the new one is worth $50 more, I don't know.

A bit off topic kinda, but how are these or the other Uniqlo down puffer jackets as compared to other Ozbargain staples like Macpac halo/mercury?

I don't own either but am on the market for one and their pricing is very similar, so would like to hear opinions from people who have tried either/both.

I can't speak of Macpac or other brands because I always been buying Uniqlo; but I can tell you this Uniqlo Seamless Down Parka has thicker layer compare to the usual ultralight down jacket.

Depending what you use it for, but the parka is warmer, more snug fit, and better choice for colder condition. The drawback is it heavier and won't fold as small as the ultralight down jacket.

i might have to try it out, thanks for the tip

I have both Macpac Halo and Uniqlo Seamless Parka (and the old style Seamless Coat, which is a longer version of the current Parka - the new version of the Seamless Coat is different, and has a flap over the main zip, which probably makes it warmer, but i personally think ruins the aesthetic).

What Saku-kurata said about the fabrics is spot on: the Macpac is lighter and more compact to stuff into a bag / its bag. I use mine as my everyday beater jacket, that I can stuff into my bag or bottom of the pram, and not care too much about it.

The flipside is that the Uniqlo has a thicker outer material, and combined with the seamless construction, offers more wind protection - I find cold air/wind penetrates the Macpac much more in really chilly conditions. I used the Seamless Coat (with lots of other layers!) in Chicago / Canada winter, with from memory, negative 10-20 degree weather, with like negative 30 or 40 degree windchill or something like that! (Was a while ago, so i forget the exact numbers)

I think the water repellent finish on the Uniqlo is much better too - while neither jacket will be safe in a downpour (they are not waterproof / proper wet weather gear), I'm less concerned with the Uniqlo getting wet in a light shower. (Tbh, if you use an umbrella, I havent had any issues using either jacket in the rain, with short spurts in the rain without the umbrella. I have proper 10-15k nm rated waterproof jackets, but I would only bother to wear those if I don't want to take an umbrella or if it's not cold.)

I also think the Uniqlo jackets just look a million times better, aesthetically! I use it as my slightly less casual jacket, or if I'm not taking an umbrella and it might rain. If I could only choose one jacket to keep, I'm keeping my beloved Seamless Coat, no question!

In terms of warmth, I feel like they are in roughly the same ballpark. Fwiw, the fill weight on my L size Halo is 233g, while the fill weight on my XL Seamless Parka is 189g. So the Macpac definitely has a much higher fill weight - but the Uniqlo apparently uses 750+ rated down in the seamless range (vs 600 rated down in Macpac Halo). So Uniqlo has less fill, but higher rated fill.

As a very rough estimate, 189x750 = 141,750 vs 233x600 = 139,800. (Although, noting that the first is XL and the second is L, so it's not an apples to apples comparison between the two brands.)

So yeah, I'd say similar ballpark in terms of warmth, tbh.

If you are after the highest warmth to weight ratio, I'd say Halo is probably the better bet (if only for the weight of the rest of the fabrics). But I like my Uniqlo Seamless a lot better personally. (I wear the Halo a lot more though, because it's my default beater jacket in cold weather!)

      My 2c.

that's an awesome breakdown. really appreciate you taking the time to write all of that. aesthetically i definitely prefer the uniqlo as well. i think i'll have to put it on to feel the weight difference. guess i'm heading into my nearest store soon.

          No worries!

Make sure to check all around the store for jackets, to see if last season Seamless Parka is still available. The old ($99) and new ($149) versions were at opposite ends of the store when I went.

@caprimulgus: Thanks! pretty good explanation that you have there. I did go to local store yesterday looking for the last year Seamless Parka unfortunately there is none left. The price of $99 is pretty good (even it says on website $59.90 now! which make it better).

@coldazure Oh also the other thing that make me choose Uniqlo in general is that because their cut fit my body style well. I am short guy (asian) and I find most of the clothing brands in Australia have their body & arms cut too long (such as Kathmandu or MacPac down jackets respectively) - Even Uniqlo too if you buy at Asian countries they will be smaller and shorter so make sure always try the fit before purchase because generally overseas stores don't accept refund.

As @caprimulgus said I also have two pair jacket. My beater is the usual Uniqlo ultralight down jacket (not the warmest, but I use inner layer so its okay for Brisbane weather as it gets hot towards afternoon) and this Seamless Down Parka.

Ultimately I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

      • Any thoughts about this one?

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/851202

For the price it seems cheaper, and puffier. I wish they disclosed the fill weight though for both the jackets.

        • +1

Fill weight should be on the tag, if you go in-store to look at them. (Or leave a comment on that deal for someone who purchased to check for you - just ask them to note what size they bought, because the fill weight is relative to size!)

I personally don't like the aesthetic of that jacket, so never really looked at it in-store. If you like it, I would guess it would be pretty similar - probably halfway between the Halo and the Seamless Parka, because it has softer fabric but not seamless.

The detachable hood is the main thing I like about that jacket. Wish the Seamless had a detachable hood too!
