Considering this for my movable work setup to use with a M1 MBP. But I've been also considering an iPad which, to my understanding, can run as a secondary display.

So I may use the $183.20 toward an ipad, even a used one. Noting it would only be a handy addition, I don't need a large additional screen.

      cool story bro

Forgot to add "right?" to "can run as a secondary display." to get some opinions on the setup.

Turned it into a story indeed.

    • +4

As someone who used to run a 13" iPad Pro as a secondary display, a decent portable monitor is far superior to using an iPad as a second screen. I found Side Car to be fiddly and annoying to use, I wouldn't rely on it except for emergency situations. If you're planning to have a permanent second monitor setup, definitely go for a dedicated portable monitor — it's way, way cheaper too, especially if you snag one on sale as per the recent AliExpress deals.

The advice I was looking for. Thank you!

      • +1

Seconded, also have used sidecar and cool as it sounds it's good for using if you really need it in a jiffy - wouldn't be a good setup as a day to day purpose.

  • Does this do USB-C charging passthrough?.

  • +2

Wow that's a fast refresh rate

    • My thoughts too. Surprised I didn't see headlines about this new technology.

      • Same! I got excited about it and picked up a 14" ZSUS and happy it worked right off hooking it into USB-C display on my Mac. Only thing I am stumped on is I can't get the Switch to work given that it advertised it does…

        • Same here. Not sure why the switch did not work but Dex worked beautifully

I feel like 17.3 is border line "portable". I am already pushing it with my 16"

    • Can confirm that 17.3" is a hefty boi — I own the UPERFECT 4K/60Hz version of this monitor and I wouldn't want to regularly carry it around with me. As a permanent second monitor setup it is fabulous though.

    • +1

      FWIW, from here, it's 394 × 242 × 12 mm and "0.97 kg Weightless".

  • Anyone pulled the gun on this one? Hows the quality? Tia.

    • +2

I now own 3 portable monitors (one UPERFECT and two Bimawen screens) and they're all pretty much the same, regardless of manufacturer/brand. Build quality is decent but not amazing, image quality is great, everything is as described in the original product details, with no dead or stuck pixels.

Make sure you pay close attention to the specs, of course. I suggest getting a screen that has a slightly wider gamut than normal sRGB — something like 99% or 100% DCI-P3 or AdobeRGB is usually good, it means the colours are a bit nicer looking and less washed out than the ultra-cheap screens.

If you can get them on sale, these portable monitors are a bargain. Much better than paying $100 for a traditional 24" 1080p/75Hz monitor with shitty colour reproduction — the portability of the smaller screens makes them a lot more versatile, and they're easier to mount wherever you need them.

Oh, and I would definitely suggest only going for portable monitors that have VESA mounting holes — otherwise you have to shell out extra for a tablet clamp VESA mount bracket if you're planning on mounting it (which I highly suggest you do). Note that if you go for the smaller 13" models, then the vast majority of these will lack a VESA mount.

      • Would you still suggest a vesa mount is needed if you are genuinely using it as a portable monitor? E.g. Portable work set up and pack it down at east each day?

        • +1

If you're regularly packing up the monitor each day then no, I probably wouldn't use a VESA mount (though you can get quick-detach mounts which might be useful in this instance). The VESA monitor mount would be more for semi-permanent setups.

If you're using a portable monitor regularly using only its included folding cover, I highly recommend putting it up on a shelf or similar, to place it at the correct height for ergonomic reasons. You don't want to be looking down at it or hunched over it for hours on end.

A heap of useful info, thank you.

      • I'm considering getting the 18" 4K monitor from this link: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006995768836.html?spm=a2….

What do you think of this model?
AliExpress is having a sale starting tomorrow where it will be USD $40 off. Is it a good buy?
I couldn't find many reviews on this particular model.

        • What would that total up to, around AUD $383 delivered including GST? It might be worth it if 4K is important to you, but it's also a significant premium over slightly smaller screens, so definitely not a bargain.

Also note that at 18.4" it is a bit unwieldy and no longer very portable, so if you're planning to carry it with you all the time it's going to be a pain. If you're just planning on mounting it semi-permanently on a VESA monitor arm, then it competes with traditional 27" 4K/60Hz monitors at a similar price point… and I'd probably go for the traditional larger monitor instead.

At display sizes of around 17" or 18" you're not going to notice much of a difference between 1440p and 4K resolutions at normal viewing distances. So a 2.5K (1440p) monitor is razor sharp and would be my go-to at this size. If you can get 4K at the same price, then sure, but it usually wouldn't be worth paying a hefty premium for it.

          • @deadpoet: After applying the discount code and GST, the total amount for the 18.5" 4K monitor is AUD $401. I won't be carrying the monitor with me; I will mostly use it as a study monitor. I chose this option because I have a small study table, and a traditional monitor would take up too much desk space.

I couldn't find an 18.5" monitor with a 2.5K resolution, but the closest option is an 18" model with 2.5K resolution. This one here - AliExpress link, costs AUD $318 plus GST. What do you think about this one?

And I plan to clamp it on my desk to save some space.

            • @TheSpiffyAquarius: The 18" 2.5K/144Hz monitor you linked looks good with nice specs, but the price is still too expensive IMO. I think you'd be better off going for the monitor in the original parent deal instead — 17.3" is not that much smaller, and the price is far, far better value at $183.20 delivered.

              • @deadpoet: That’s quite a massive price difference between 17.3” and 18”.
I wonder if the 0.7” screen size differences is significant ?

                • @TheSpiffyAquarius: Yeah I find there's usually a huge price jump when you go up to 18", and IMO it is not worth it. Literally less than one inch of diagonal screen space, it's not much, you'll barely notice it.

    144mhz lol

  • 20% off sounded like a good deal given these specs. Getting a 17.3" 2K under $200 is making it very competitive again 1080p versions too. The UPerfect is around 380mm wide so its a little on the big side but the advantage is more screen real estate.

    • Noting you can get the same real estate with a smaller monitor - this 2K resolution is not limited to 17.3" version.

      • Yes i looked at 15.6 in touch screens too bit opted to try a larger screen

First comment in here. I’ve bought the Arzopa portable display 15.6” for $156 on Amazon early this week now down by $10 $149 and I’m loving it. Here’s the link for anyone interested.

    • Nice try, spammer. That’s got completely different specs, is smaller, only 1080p/60Hz and is in no way comparable to this deal.

      • -1

Not a spammer. Didn’t look at all the specs. This doesn’t mean you call someone new to the platform as spammer. Being kind and giving more information does help people to learn about tech and help others.
