As a long time owner of a Mini 3:Pro and a Mini 4 Pro, I can't say enough good things about this equipment.
Go the fly more and always get the RC2 is my advice.

    • Bad experience with the RC1?

      • +1

No, just RC2 is superior and the Mini 4:Pro comes with the RC2 anyway. You'd get a M4P over a M3P for many reasons (M3P is still an outstanding drone), but the sideways obstacle avoidance on the 4 alone makes it well worth it.

        • I do agree to get the RC version of the controller regardless of choice of drone. I was wondering if you had a bad experience with the RC1 and that was your main reason to upgrade? I've had a few disconnections with my RC1, likely due to the internal antennas.

If I was buying a Mini drone now, I'd 100% get the Mini 4 Pro over the 3 Pro

          • @thisusernameistaken: I wouldn't say it's worth the upgrade on that alone. I see your perspective absolutely. I would recommend doing what I did with my 3. Throw your entire kit on eBay for 99 cents 🤣 I was in no hurry and did a 10 day auction. It ended up (back then) going for north of $850. I then purchased the 4:for as cheap as I could and the real cost was therefore $200-$300 for me. Something like that. I even have lots of Mini 3 Pro accessories I didn't give to the dude that purchased from me on eBay as I just sold the original kit. So I still have ND filters, extra capacity batteries and things like that so my days of squeezing my original M3P purchase aren't over.

If I was in your situation I'd probably first tell DJI care that you are having some controller issues. They can see what's up in your logs.

            • @seamonkey: Thanks. I got mine from the Anaconda price-match deal for $935 and then bought the fly more kit plus on eBay at a discount and also got DJI Care Refresh for two years.

That's a good point to keep the extra batteries and only sell the drone, one battery and controller… I forgot that I can reuse my Mini 3 Pro batteries in the Mini 4 Pro..

If I can get the Mini 4 Pro for a similar price to what I paid for the Mini 3 Pro, I'd definitely consider it.

Unfortunately it seems to be radio interference that causes the connection to drop and I think having internal antennas doesn't help

    • So do you recommend mini 4 Pro or mini 3 Pro?

      • +3

Whilst I understand it's pricier. 4 wins. If someone can only afford a 3, they are still getting an excellent drone.

        • Are you saying specifically the RC 2 is better than also the RC-N2 as well, or just gen 2 versions are better than gen 1?

          • +1

@stickymoo: I personally can't do the whole plug phone in and use that option, it'd do my head in. I've never used the N2 so I have no really to even this opinion. Only that I like the RC2 considerably more than the RC1. And any screenless option I'm clueless about. Coincidentally a package is arriving here today. 😂 Avata 2, Goggles 3, Motion Controller 3, fly more etc. Man. I need to sell some stuff. 🤣

      • I think Mini 3 Pro has been sold out in many shops, even DJI official website doesn't sell it anymore in Australia. The price difference is not big so people might as well just buy the Mini 4 Pro if they want those Pro features. Personally I don't want to spend that much, so I just bought the Mini 3 (non-Pro) to replace my aging Phantom 3 Advanced.

        • I saw mini pro 3 is still available on David Jones and Amazon.

  • DJI MINI 3 DRONE FLY MORE COMBO PLUS is $819 at David Jones online if someone is interested.

      Non-pro though

      • @thisusernameistaken: What is mainly different in pro version?

        • Structurally they are almost the same drone (same props, same batteries, same camera etc)… the key differences are the lack of obstacle avoidance sensors and the inclusion of landing gear on the Mini 3

The lack of landing gear on the 3 Pro is not a huge issue… just land in your hand if the ground is not suitable.

Obstacle avoidance on the Pro model lets you do a ton of cool things… for example, you can do active track which allows the drone to fly autonomously while tracking a person or a car (be sure to follow CASA drone rules!). The drone will also hover if it detects an obstacle while you're flying even when flying normally. You also get access to Master Shots which lets the drone fly a pre-programmed flight pattern, capturing most common drone shots.

Obstacle avoidance is a nice feature to have. You still need to be alert, it's not something you should absolutely rely on… just like how you shouldn't rely on lane assist in the car.

Here are the key differences between the DJI Mini 3 and DJI Mini 3 Pro:

Price: The Mini 3 base unit cost while the Mini 3 Pro is considerably higher depending on the deal you grab.
Obstacle avoidance sensors: The Mini 3 Pro has forward, backward, and downward vision sensors for obstacle detection, while the Mini 3 only has a downward vision system.
Video capabilities: The Mini 3 Pro can shoot 4K video at up to 60fps and 150Mbps bitrate with a D-Cinelike color profile, while the Mini 3 is limited to 4K 30fps at 100Mbps.
Photo resolution: The Mini 3 Pro has a 48MP photo mode, whereas the Mini 3 maxes out at 12MP.
Image transmission: The Mini 3 Pro uses the more robust O3 transmission system with better range and latency, while the Mini 3 uses the older O2 system.
Intelligent shooting modes: The Mini 3 Pro has additional modes like ActiveTrack, MasterShots, Hyperlapse, and QuickShots that are missing on the Mini 3.
ISO sensitivity: The Mini 3 Pro can increase to ISO 6400 versus 3200 on the Mini 3 for low-light performance.
Controller compatibility: The Mini 3 Pro is compatible with the DJI RC Pro smart controller, while it's unclear if the Mini 3 will get this compatibility

          • @seamonkey: What SD card would you recommend

            • +1

              @stickymoo: SanDisk Extreme PRO 32GB V30 U3 A1 microSDHC
              Lexar 1066x 64GB V30 U3 A2 microSDXC
              Kingston Canvas GO! Plus 64GB V30 U3 A2 microSDXC
              Lexar 1066x 128GB V30 U3 A2 microSDXC
              Kingston Canvas GO! Plus 128GB V30 U3 A2 microSDXC
              Lexar 1066x 256GB V30 U3 A2 microSDXC
              Lexar 1066x 512GB V30 U3 A2 microSDXC
              Samsung EVO Plus 512GB V30 U3 A2 microSDXC

The key things to look for are:

              V30 Video Speed Class
This indicates a minimum write speed of 30MB/s, which is required for 4K 60fps video recording on the Mini 4 Pro.
              U3 UHS Speed Class
This means the card has a minimum write speed of 30MB/s, meeting the V30 requirement.

              A1/A2 Application Performance Class
This is not as critical, but A2 cards have better random read/write performance useful for app usage.

The Samsung EVO Plus 256GB U3 A2 V30 card you already have is one of the recommended options from DJI and other sources for the Mini 4 Pro. Higher capacities like 512GB provide more storage for video footage.

    • Looks like David Jones is out of stock. That was quick.

  • Starting to consider these, given that the batteries for my Mavic Pro original are starting to develop cell bloat (despite monthly maintenance top ups) one by one and are getting disposed of. The poor drone itself is perfectly intact still and works a treat, but isn't worth the ongoing cost of additional and increasingly rare batteries if the batteries continue to have a finite lifespan…

    • My OG Mavic Pro is 7 yo now and it's been rarely used. Despite the age, I eventually get the batteries to work when I occasionally want to fly. When I try to charge them, all the LEDs would rapidly flash. I leave them like that or retry a couple of times and eventually they charge. No bloating.

I wonder if I can do something to revive them properly. These great devices didn't deserve to be neglected like that.

      • You're never meant to let Lithium Polymer batteries get all the way to 0% charge, they cannot be charged up ever again (safely) if you let them get to that state. You can't achieve 0% charge simply from flying the thing until it insists on landing - it will refuse to fly when it hits a certain reserve level of power that it can still charge from. The 0% occurs if you leave them for a long period of time without charging them, and that's why I do the monthly maintenance top ups.

        • Yeah, that's understandable.

I was wondering if there's anything I can do to help them come back a little more than it is right now.

Or pull them apart and replace the cells maybe.

    • What's with the batteries on these? It feels like an SR71 blackbird (requires refueling as soon as it gets up in the air)

If I don't re-charge the batteries on my Mini 2 pro, they will lose 1 bar of charge in like 3 weeks, 2 bars in 6 weeks or so. It's like they de-charge themselves for safety. (These are not thrashed batteries and they are genuine)

      • Yes, they discharge themselves to ~50% after a few weeks of not being used for health reasons. This is an intended feature.

      • Do you fly half full batteries that were fully charged weeks ago?

        • +1

No, mine is left in the car and I plug both the drone and the battery bank into a USB-C charge on the way to my flying destinations, most of the time I get it back to 100%

  • Haven't had a drone since the mavic air. Tossing up between an air 3, or mini pro 4.

Is the main reason i'd consider the mini pro 4 because it is under 250g, size, weight and restrictions?

Does that effectively matter in Australia?

    • Unlikely as this issue is only with a few US politicians.

      • Hopefully it does not follow the Huawei way.
