190

Three options to grab a SIM card prior to leaving Australia. Two of them are free physical SIMs that are posted to you in Australia. One is for monthly prepaid plans starting from $8 the other is for unlimited data plans that you can buy for the exact days you are in New Zealand. You can also add more days if you decide to stay longer in NZ. Third option is a prepaid eSIM. Check out the Website. No hooks and great value. This is ongoing so just order the number you need for your trip. They last 7 years. They need to be activated when you land in New Zealand as they connect to the 2degrees network in New Zealand.

We will also deliver the SIM by courier to your first nights accommodation if you give is 2 working days notice. You can do this online.

2degrees has just improved the deal on the monthly plans. Plans now start from $8 and they have made the following changes. These are just some of the examples:

ALL $NZ

$10 plan is now $8
$30 plan is now only $25 and you get 6GB of data for the first four months.
A new plan at $35 gives you 9GB for the first 4 months if you top up each month.

The deal is still ongoing and now has eSIM option and an unlimited data option for SIMs. These are posted to you in Australia from Australia so only take 3-5 days to get to you.

  • the other is for unlimited data plans that you can buy for the exact days you are in New Zealand.

So I can request a free unlimited data plan for 365 days?

you can request anything - whether or not it will be acceded is something else

        • You buy unlimited data for a daily rate starting from just NZ$3.16 per day. Does hat make sense?

  • I've found 2Degrees DataClock to be very useful

    • Yep, if you buy the monthly prepaid plan SIM you can download the dataclock app and get 1 hour per day free (eg 1 hour of data). Most people use this for movie downloads, books, making calls home etc.

  • No, it allows you to buy unlimited data from under NZ$ 3.20 per day. The SIM is FREE which is normally sold for $5 or more. This means one person in the group can buy the data and then hotspot to the other group members so you all effectively get unlimited data. Cheers Mike

      • Those are local SIMs and don't come with some of the benefits, ie double data for 4 months. The Unlimited data SIMs are not available at Supermarkets etc. Cheers Mike

      • Having a sim card pre departure is much more convenient than landing, finding a store that sells a Sim card, navigating to the store with no data, then buying and using it … Waste of time and worth the money IMO, esp when travelling.

Some of the SIMs available at the airport are not always the best value!

  • What’s the best choice if I’m going to NZ later in the year for a few days? Struggling to understand why anyone would choose the monthly plan(s) when the data is limited vs the “travel sim” which is unlimited?

    • Some people on a limited budget use the monthly from just $10 and use wi-fi as much as possible. heaps of places have free wi-fi. The unlimited is around NZ$3 per day so for some that are staying in NZ for 20-30 days plus it adds up for them. Also if you are a group or family, get one unlimited and the rest can just use a monthly to hot spot off. Cheers Mike

      • Are you saying if other phones want to hot spot of a phone with the unlimited daily plan they also need a 2 degrees Sim?

        • Nope - they can hot spot with any SIM

    • For a few days, unlimited for sure. Cheers

      • Sorry just clarifying, can I just buy the daily plan and others in the family hotspot of that, without needing their own 2 degrees sim?

  • Is this ongoing offer or limited time offer?
Actualy I'm going to NZ in Septemeber. Can I buy only the sim card atm and then activate it in September closer to my departure date?
Is there any plan which suites to my situation?
    Thanks

This is ongoing. The SIMs will last 7 years so plenty of time! You need to activate in New Zealand as needs to connect to the 2degrees Network. Just saves the hassle of tracking one down in NZ or getting ripped off at the airport!

      • Does this one include 100mb free data?

        • Yes it does include 100mb data. Just received 2 sim cards delivered.

  • I used the one NZ and spark network in NZ, my optus sim roamed to all 3 of the major there

  • Thanks OP!

  • I just wanted to say I used this for my recent trip in Christchurch and it was great.

    1. Ordered SIM and it arrived roughly 2 weeks later
    2. Installed the sim in an old mobile I had
    3. Arrived in Christchurch and sim was automatically activated upon turning on mobile
    4. Scanned the QR code and paid $60 for unlimited data for 14 days

The network reception was fantastic. My wife and I streamed our devices to the mobile hotspot with no issues.

So I highly recommend this and have also ordered it for my inlaws who normally use the Vodafone $5 a day thing.

My wife bought the Lemon Mobile one and had so many issues trying to activate it. She just ended up sharing this.

  • Are the eSims activated or do you have to wait to be on the NZ network before they're activated?

  • Is this still ongoing? Has anyone else has luck? I ordered a physical Sim weeks ago and have not received anything. I've also emailed to enquire and have not heard back.
