Dyson Pure Hot+Cool Link

Anyone using the Dyson Pure Hot+Cool Link fan (not the purfier version - just the cool/heat fan) to heat a small bedroom whole night?

Reading online people seem to say the cooling sucks and it's just a powerful fan - but heating is actually pretty good. Reading online it's 2000w heating so it's not super low but maybe efficient enough to use less to maintain a bedroom (adults) at reasonable temp (say 17-19c)?

  • just found this - https://www.gadgetguy.com.au/dyson-pure-hot-cool-link-not-bl….

so seems heating may actually suck too… and not that efficent. Argh.

Strictly speaking all (non-reverse-cycle) heaters are 100% efficient, minus fractions of a percent to account for any indicator lights and the noise they generate. Reverse-cycle air conditioners are greater than 100%.

All of them will just dump x watts of energy into a room. There is of course a difference in how you feel while it heats up. An oil fin heater will (eventually) heat up a whole room the same as a fan heater, but if you aim a fan heater at yourself, you'll feel warm immediately even if a chair 2 meters away is still freezing.

That is one way to reduce electricity usage - heat the person rather than the room. If you're mostly sitting at a desk, a fan or radiant bar heater pointed at you would heat you up rather all the empty space in your room like an oil fin heater.

It's like the reverse of having to turn on a ducted aircon that cools down two rooms when you're only using one.

I use the purifier hot+cool and it works similarly to a cheaper model, but I like the sleek design and wifi connectivity (it talks to Home Assistant perfectly) so I find it worth the extra cost.

The cooling part does exactly what I expect it to do - blow air like a fan.

  • one of my kids has a dyson hot+cool fan in their room.

usually they use it for the fan function/white noise.

they used it the other morning when temperatures plummeted to below 15C (Brisbane). the room felt warm. said child was in a tshirt .

    • Thanks. Keen to find out how much it used overnight. I've ordered it and will put a usage monitor on the plug but I think reading the article, at 2000w t would still be like $6 of usage each night during winter if ran overnight for 8hours. (sydney)

      • Wow, how much does electricity cost there?

In any case they don't pull 2000W constantly unless you're in a very cold room or the room is too large for the heater. The thermostat will cycle it on/off.

  • You mean AM09 Hot+Cool™ Jet Focus? I have a bunch of these and also a HP01 purifier. These are OK for Brisbane because we only use them for a few months of the year. They make great bathroom space heaters. I don't use any of mine for cooling, they're rubbish for that.

  • +1

Reading online people seem to say the cooling sucks

It doesn't have a refrigerator, I'm not sure what people expect, other than deceptive advertising.

    • I can't believe people fell for this. Dyson is happy they did.

  • Good portable heater, heat up the room very fast, consume less energy

    • You have one? How much do you run the unit and any idea on running cost? Consumes less energy than?

The cheapest way of heating/cooling would be Reverse Cycle Air Conditioners. The only good thing about Dyson is that it comes with the air purification/air circulation/app. Don't think anyone here compares heaters to see which is better in running cost unless it's from The Choice. I got a Dyson, it does its job, so would $75 Bladeless Ceramic Fan Heater from Kmart for the purpose of heating, I got one of them too lol.

  • I have one for my kid's bedroom. Not sure of running costs, but I've used it for their room for 3 years in the Winter and it works incredibly well, usually with the door open a crack to let the air cycle a bit. It just gets itself up to the desired temp then stops heating until it drops again, so I'd say it's fairly efficient in the sense it isn't constantly running.

    • Thanks and good to hear. I've gone a head and ordered as they have a 45days return gurantee. Keen to see how much it clocks to keep our room above freezing.

as some background, i'm trying to tackle a $1k+ energy bill per quarter (Despite my 6kw solar), as oil fin heaters and ducted air con are killing my pocket it seems.

So considering 2x splits for the 2 babie rooms - and this dyson for our master room (if it ends up decent running cost)

      • No aircon in your master? For comparison, the Dyson AM09 is rated at 2kW; the 2.5kW reverse split system in my master peaks at 0.79kW in heating mode. So you'll be using way more power but only for a few weeks in mid-winter. I heat my rooms to 19°C in winter seeing as the best temperature for sleep is considered to be 18°C.
