McDonald's Have Dun Goofed Their Shake Prices

Prices:

Small - $3 for 1150kJ
Medium $5.90 for 1740kJ
Large $6.30 for 2110kJ

So the cheapest per kJ/litre is small.

I am no mathematician but small is the cheapest, large is next, followed by medium.

Thus if you want a large quantity of Shake, buy multiple Smalls.

The above is for chocolate but other flavours, despite fluctuating in kJ, still show Small as the cheapest.

How often do you think people go to Maccas and order a small meal? Apparently for some it's the equivalent of buying small sized condoms.

For every one person buying the $3 shakes and $2 hamburgers, there are dozens ordering straight from the full priced menu, money be damned.

    • i only have 2 cup holders…

      i aint ordering 4 small shakes if i wanted 2 biggies :D

      A Disney character.

      • Goofy ???

Goofy is an American cartoon character created by the Walt Disney Company. He is a tall, anthropomorphic dog who typically wears a turtle neck and vest, with pants, shoes, white gloves, and a tall hat originally designed as a rumpled fedora.

          an American cartoon character

NOT TRUE!!! Gross misinformation and disinformation and … and … and whatever!!!!

I saw Goofy in Disneyland with my own two eyes. Is real. Walks around the Kingdom with a happy attitude. Waves to everyone. Amazingly (for a Yank) it doesn't talk …

          It is real !!!!!

There are people like you who submit no deals to this website.

And there are people like me who submit deals and use exotic memes. You must accept the meme.

        • +4

To goof means to mess up, you don't need to know memes to know that

          • -2

@fredblogs: i or anyone i know has ever said goof to say they or i have messed up. we just say ohh we f*&%ed up

            • @sandman20104159: In Canada, if you call someone a goof (that's been to prison) you're about to get goofed up as it translates to chomo

            • +1

@sandman20104159: The fact that you don't know what "goof" means (a more than century old word) is not everyone else's problem.

    Small $3.00 1150kJ = 0.260869565 c/kJ
    Medium $5.90 1740 kJ = 0.33908046 c/kJ
    Large $6.30 2110 kJ = 0.298578199 c/kJ

    your math checks out

  • +8

You're right, everyone going to Maccas should prioritise getting the most kJ they can. /s

    • +6

And remember, if you're not sure about something, rub it against a piece of paper. If the paper turns clear eat it.

  • -4

But now you're contributing to more waste. Think of the environmental consequences if we bought everything in multiple small sizes.

    • +23

Yeah, but the straws collapse half way through on the large

  • +25

Small shake is on the loose change menu at the moment, hence the lower price/slightly better value.

    • +7

They've also must've dun goofed with their 24 nuggets for $11.95 and 20 nuggets for $14.25 for the past several years.

      • +6

I noticed this the other day. I don't often eat McDonalds but was looking at their nugget pricing. 24 pack is on the Value Deal menu so was a fat (profanity) and smashed 24 nuggets.

        Nuggets Price Price/Nugget
        6 7.5 1.25
        10 8.75 0.88
        20 13.5 0.68
        24 11.95 0.50
        40 22.7 0.57
        • And sometimes they have a deal for 24 nuggets $9.95.

Or apply a 25% off discount and get 24 discount for $9.56.

      • I think that's always been intentional as a full bag of nuggets to cook is exactly 24

  • Do people honestly think in terms of $/kJ?

In this case you should probably only buy rice or potatoes. I imagine that'll give you the best bang for buck if that's what you're focussing on.

    • +7

      Unleaded.

    • +6

Do people honestly think in terms of $/kJ?

In this case, it's just a way to quantify how much shake you're getting. And it's an interesting one, because it flies in the face of Maccas' usual Small / Medium / Large pricing strategy.

In the MyMacca's app for my local (VIC), I'm seeing slightly different prices:

      Small - $3 for 1150kJ
      Medium $5.90 $5.40 for 1740kJ
      Large $6.30 $5.80 for 2110kJ

Even so, Small is still marginally the best value (383.3 kj/$), followed by Large (363.8 kj/$) and Medium is still worst (322.2 kj/$).

EDIT: Someone stated above that the Small Shakes are on the "loose change" menu at the moment. So I guess that explains it..

      • +1

Damn, 60c cheaper than WA for the large

You steal our GST, and now you have cheaper shakes jees lol

      • -4

It's just a highly unusual way to quantify it.

        Why not $/volume of cup?
        $ per happiness level granted?
$ per amount of gastro issues you have or don't have afterwards?

Put another way - by this logic, a 2L bottle of water is terrible value compared to a 600mL bottle of water (you'd be paying much more $ per kJ in the 2L version). But that's obviously incorrect.

        • -1

          Can you just shut up?

        • +2

No worries, just get the volume of each cup from their website or app for us, we'll wait.

Volume is obviously what people would be using if the information was available, but it's not.

    • +6

Do people honestly think in terms of $/kJ?

Yep! So glad when the supermarkets were forced to introduce unit price information in Australia, saves so much time not having to do the maths while shopping! - Source

Don't you check the price per 100g between multiple, similar products? This is basically the same thing being that the item is identical between sizes, kJ will show us the quantity differentiation.

        • +10

$/kJ is completely different to $/g

Ahh, it's not completely different.. McDonalds don't list the size, but they list the kJ/mL. Using the 389kJ/100mL * Cup Size here, we make out the approximate sizes. Using the $/kJ as listed by OP (& Gdsamp), we see the following:

          Small = $3.00 = 331mL = 1150kJ = 0.33908046 c/kJ = $0.91/100mL <— Best
          Medium = $5.90 = 447mL = 1740kJ = 0.298578199 c/kJ = $1.32/100mL <— Worst
          Large = $6.30 = 542mL = 2110kJ = 0.33908046 c/kJ = $1.16/100mL <— $11.62/L is very expensive for milk and sugar :D

It is the exact comparison as the sizes have the same kJ/mL. Ideally, you'd use $/mL, but McDonalds are smoke and mirrors when it comes to the sizes/mL, so $/kJ can be correct with the information that McDonalds gives us.

Because it's not a standard equation, does not make it invalid. Also, please enlighten me if I'm wrong as I'm not good at maths :D (I didn't neg you).

    • Yeah pretty sure white sugar has more kj per g and $ than any potato or grain of rice.

It also melts into warm water nicely in the winter.

      • True that at least - so this poster should be just buying sugar and eating it…

        • Too slow. For a truly quick and cheap hit you need a syrup enema.

    • just like $ / alcohol %.

  • +6

No goofed, this is strategic pricing, the low option represents an entry level, whereas the larger two option are so closely priced, that it pushes the person up to a large so that can place the extra money in the tills

  • Wish they were good old fashioned "THICK" shakes not just slurry

  • -1

Is it not just because the shakes are all topped with the same amount of whipped cream? So you're not getting more shake for your money just the same amount of whipped cream as a larger size.

    • +3

I didn’t even know they put whipped cream on their thick shakes.

      • Ah I just google McDonald's Shake which brought up an OS version I think.

You mean the alcoholic who tried to make a documentary about unhealthy eating…?

      • +2

Morale of the story: doesn't matter what you drink or eat, you can just die of something random

        • Moral of the story: do whatever you want and enjoy your life while you can.

    • +2

I've also recently learnt this and it is shocking. Even in the documentary he openly declares he had no alcohol when directly asked by the doctor. Despite drinking it like wild every single day.

And the part where the doctor says you have a super bad liver and if you were an alcoholic I'd tell you to stop drinking otherwise you are going to die….

And Morgan is like "oh really, well luckily that is not me. this must be from the mcdonalds".

    Small - $3 for 1150kJ
    Medium $5.90 for 1740kJ
    Large $6.30 for 2110kJ

    Interesting, for banana in WA:

    Small - $3 for 1100kJ
    Medium - $5.80 for 1480kJ
    Large - $6.40 for 1800Kj

So we're cheaper for the medium, but more exxy for the large… go figure

  • -1

probably because the filling is the cheapest stuff and most of the weight. the sprinkle stuff and syrup on top probably costs the most per kg to restock.

most of the shake is just filling. my bad I was thinking of mcflurry but same situation probably just premade slop from powder.

Next you should investigate the happy meal:

    Item Price
    Cheeseburger $4.90
Cheeseburger Happy Meal w/ sml Coke $5.75
Cheeseburger Happy Meal w/ sml shake $5.75
Sml cheeseburger meal w/ sml coke $8.55
Sml cheeseburger meal w/ sml shake $9.40
    • a cheeseburger can prob be made for $1.50

      • Only for cough new cough customers, right?

      • Yea you're right; I just make a new account for a $1.50 cheeseburger. Also helps to save the app accounts so you can set free bday offers.

        • +1

I may or may not do the same

  • Same with 7-11 coffees
    Better value getting 2x $1 coffees than 1x $2

    • +1

Better value to just select "medium" into your small cup.

      • +1

        does it fit?

  • This goes well with a recent post saying 2 x 3 nugget happy meals is only around $1 more than 1 x 6 nugget happy meal so it’s worth getting 2 and the extra fries, drink and toy.

  • Same like 24 nuggets vs 40 nuggets price.

  • Do I get a density certificate too?

  • Looks to me like the small has a promo, most people that want more than a small are not going to order 2x small anyway. So they look to medium/large which is price anchored to make large look like a good deal (because it's just a few more cents than medium), so they get plenty of orders on the large and push more volume.

  • Small takes most labour for them as a percentage of price so best value

  • -1

    Ugh, stop buying McDonals OP…

Also, I commend you on dun goofing but you've gotta let the normies find out for themselves…

    • stop buying McDonals OP

I think this claim is overblown. It's cheap and there is nothing particularly unhealthy about the food, in my opinion. It depends on what you order.
