  • At 764, I would take a punt. Unlikely it will trump my OLED steam deck.

You willing to visit the gates of Hell aka Asus Warranty?

      Context: https://youtu.be/7pMrssIrKcY?si

      • +1

But you're not going through ASUS directly, so why does this matter?

        • +4

Ebay is even worse. I'm thinking of making a thread on OzBargain about it. I'm trying to claim warranty for a product that stopped working that I purchased through eBay 6 months ago. The seller is not responding. Got in touch with eBay and all they can do is send the seller a notification. No other help provided. I presume the seller has just given up on their account and started a new account to avoid dealing with warranty/consequences. This is the second time I've had to claim warranty for an eBay purchase and I've had trouble.

          • +3

@alikazi: Chargeback with PayPal/bank? I've found eBay to be pretty good overall when I've had issues, which hasn't been often. In this case the seller is Wireless 1 who I believe have an actual store?

            • +2

@ldd-mn: Ok i will try to go that route. Last time I was lucky to resolve the warranty issue with a laptop I purchased when an associate posted a deal on OzBargain and I negged it and commented how the seller didn't refund me after I sent the laptop back to them through return request on eBay. The laptop arrived not as described. The seller accepted the return, I shipped it, it was delivered and then no response from them. They kind of got forced into returning my money due to public humiliation.

              • @alikazi: eBay is unhelpful sometimes, but if a seller does this - basically scam you out a laptop - eBay will definitely investigate it for you and eventually refund you.

            • @ldd-mn: Also I think even if you contact Wireless 1 for a warranty issue they might redirect you to go through official Asus route because you have to ship the device to Asus. So in that case the seller might not be relevant.

              • +1

                @alikazi: This. ^^^

Less hands for it to pass through getting your device back and fixed too.

              • @alikazi: It's illegal for Australian vendors to send you to the manufacturer. They are responsible.

          • @alikazi: Go to Dept Fair trading?

          • +1

@alikazi: Book a date with NCAT with ebay as the respondent: https://ncat.nsw.gov.au/case-types/consumers-and-businesses/…

I knew it was a link for the gaming nexus youtube story before even clicking 🤣

      • +1

This is irrelevant in Australia, you return faulty products to the store.

  • can I play Black Myth: Wukong on this?

    • +14

      No it's not out yet

    • from memory, apparently it needs a 1060 for med 1080p graphics settings so this should be fine for low-med.

  • Im thinking to wait another month. Refurbished might drop to $700.

    Asus + refurb sounds ick

Brand New is also available for $705.26 Delivered @ Amazon Germany via AU

    • +1

that's actually a better deal, probably because of the new one is coming out soon, already got steamdeck oled, otherwise might tempt to grab one

    • +9

Cheap but that's the Non-Extreme model.

      • +1

        Good spot!

    • That’s the non extreme one.

  • Damn, doesn't this doodoo all over the steam deck performance wise?

    • Yep

  • +1

I bought one of these around the $1000 mark and no regrets. It can be docked to essentially become a mid-range gaming PC, or you grab and go. I've been playing Baldurs Gate 3 at 1440p with no issues. The main downside is the limited battery life 1-2 hours max on any modern games. If battery life is important, wait for the Asus ROG Ally X.

    • +1

But thats an extra $800. This and a battery bank could work. I wonder how big the bank would need to be to match the ally x.

      • It went from a 40Wh battery to an 80Wh battery. For your standard 3.7V portable charger, thats just roughly 10800mAh, so a 15000mAh battery (for efficiency losses) will cover the difference.

        • If a charger is 10000mah but is 5v is it 50wh. That charges device at 22w.

Seems like that would cover it.

          • @Jklaro: It isn't 5V because Li-ion batteries are rated at 3.7V. Thats how they trick you to thinking you got a large battery.

            • @ATangk: Lol i always went of mah. But really they should have wh on the batteries.

So all portable battery banks are 3.7v?

              • @Jklaro: Unless advertised, yes, all are at 3.7V. That is why the very largest airplane approved power banks are 27000mAh, as 27000 x 3.7V fits just under the 100Wh limit.

                • -1

@ATangk: Can you test it yourslef? Is it just the output voltage or charge voltage?

    • What dock and screen do you use? Can’t seem to get it working on the 34inch wide Alienware screen

  • +4

Honestly, I'll wait at this point. With snapdragon X processors being promising, I'll rather invest into that in a generation or two, as the battery life of that would be leagues better.

Crazy how only 3 years ago, I was moaning about no high powered x86 handheld PC's and only arm based ones. How the tables have turned.

    • I doubt it's gonna happen, with all the hype in handhelds apu's are definitely gonna go into high gear now.

We could had AAA gaming on arm now but instead we got gatcha and waifu games on phones instead.

      • Yeah but snapdragon X is getting pushed by Microsoft. It'll take a gen or two before a steam deck get made with arm, but watch as gpd and aya makes the first handheld windows on arm hand held device this year.

So we're finally getting the thing we've been dreaming of since Xcom was ported onto Android.

That being said, I am excited to see the new amd apu. The l2 cache boost will really help with the bandwidth issues the 780m had encountered.

  • They will deny warranty for a small nick on the chassis.

    • +6

That's ASUS Usa, yes ASUS Aus may be similar, I don't know, but you can't blanket paint one country's service issues as being applicable to the whole world.

      • -1

It was actually Asus Canda i think. However can confirm Asus Aus is no better. My ROG z13 been sent in 2 times withing 6 months. Initially claimed there was no issue. I got it back and had to send it back again as all they had done was a factory reset. They replaced the motherboard and when i got it back the screen was damaged. Am now tryin to chase up a replacement through ACL. Call centre is absolutely useless. They can't make any decisions - even the managers. Every time it is just "escalated" and you get a response close to a week later. Overall in the 6 months ive owned it i have had it for 4.

        • +1

Like always, if you sent it to the manufacturer that's on you. The ACL is clear that customers have the right to return to the store. You buggered up. ASUS warranty woes are irrelevant in Australia.

  • Hey dudes, was following these deals for the past couple of days and trying to decide whether to get rog ally or steam deck oled. Found steam oled for $900 on marketplace and wondering about peoples' opinions whether it is worth getting one or not.

(i figured since steam deck is grey import anyway - might as well get used one that seems to be in mint condition).

    • +1

You can buy steam deck from Big W. I assume it is an import but you may have recourse if issues arise.
      https://www.bigw.com.au/product/valve-steam-deck-oled-512gb-…

It's only $120 more brand new. Why get second hand??

      • +2

Thanks, I could even go with https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/325895051735?var=514944550094 - get it with zip code for $924 using gift cards. Was wondering if $900 is a good price for barely used one these days

        • +1

I would personally opt for the Legion Go. But the SD is better for useability. Subjective

          • +1

@vinni9284: Aaahhh I see. Thanks for your input nevertheless.

            • +1

@Humblecrunch: I am a bigger person. So I'd prefer the 8.8' screen over the 7.4' SD. Plus the LG has WinOS and you can install many platforms without tweaking. Epic games, Steam, Xbox, direct game installs etc… 1600p over 900p OLED, I guess you have to be the judge. Good luck!

              • @vinni9284: The Legion is just a lot bigger than the Ally, as is the Steam Deck, even the Ally is borderline but I think I could stretch it, any bigger seems too big for my primary use-case, the train.

                • @witheredcouch: Don't get the Legion Go. The software support is non-existent. Speakers are worse of the big 3.
The big screen is nice but it's heavy and the high resolution is wasted because the silicon can't keep up.

Ally just got AMD Frame Generation and a new UI is coming next month.

                  • +1

@The Value: Detachable controllers took it out of contention from day 1 for me anyway. Going from a Switch to a Switch Lite was enough for me to know that handhelds should be one piece and not detachable, unless the Legion is significantly more rigid on its attachment, it's just way less solid feeling.

                    • @witheredcouch: For the few months I owned one, it was very rigid but I never used it like that. It was always in a grip cover.

If you take it off and on a lot, it'll probably wear quickly.

                      • @The Value: I imagine that grip cover would help with rigidity. I'm a no grip/case on my handhelds person as I need them to be as compact as possible in a bag, different use-cases I guess

                        • @witheredcouch: I'll think you'll be very happy with the Ally. Main downsides is the battery life and Windows is Windows.

                          • @The Value: Yeah, more battery would really be nice but realistically I can charge each night and will need no more than about 50 mins a day. Windows on a handheld is my biggest negative, and why i'm tempted to wait for the rumoured Xbox handheld move, as i'd prefer a more locked down console-like experience. But the closest out is Steam Deck and its just too big.

    • -1

Where are you gonna use the device? Steam deck excels in fps/watt but its asthmatic when running AAA games.

My personal choice is the legion go for the big screen, but then again I got a set of AR glasses on order from the recent 25% ebay deal so now I'm just hunting the cheapest used ally since screen size isn't a factor anymore.
