You should probably ask if they are wired as well.

    • No, they are for your ears not your teeth

The IEMs aren't bluetooth, only wired

Basically these are the drivers+cables to connect into an IEM pack for a musician or into a headphone jack on a phone, tablet, etc.

From memory (I don't have my old set here at work), the cable is detachable with something like 0.75/0.78mm 2-pin connection at the IEM end.

JH Audio, MEE Audio, and probably a lot of others make Bluetooth neck-strap cables to suit that same connection, so you could convert these to Bluetooth ones if you really wanted to.

If anyone is after a cheaper option, I got these Amazon ones recently and they've been great with the foam ends.

Etymotic's are great, granted a generic fit, however for reducing noise they do the job just fine. The flanges can be a tad bit intrusive if you are not used to IEM fitment as they go deep.

    • Yeah, those are a good generic option. If anyone prefers not buying from Amazon, they're $39.95 inc. GST plus shipping (free shipping over $80) here from an Aussie shop: https://www.earjobs.com.au/collections/musicians-earplugs/pr…

@erikryder Any chance of getting the discount code to also work on the sleeping earplugs? TIA

    • My wife would be keen on this too.

    • Unfortunately this special doesn't include the sleep plugs, since they were on special recently.

Feel free to sign up to earLAB's email list - the newsletter includes specials on the sleep plugs quite regularly.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help

  • I guess this should be marked as Melbourne only as you need to get your ear moulded in person at Footscray or Richmond

Shame, I'm seriously interested after gigs on both Friday & Saturday have reminded me that I'm going deaf.

    • You can get the ear impressions from somewhere else and send the impression to earLAB.

Here's a few places that do impressions: https://www.acscustom.com.au/dealers

Let me know if you live elsewhere and need some recommendations

      • Oh nice - I actually have a dealer around the corner, cheers.

Looking at the description for the Pro 17s, they honestly sounds too good to be true. I've tried cheap "live music" marketed plugs before that were only as good as putting my fingers in my ear. Do these genuinely claim to make live music sound just as layered as ever, just quieter?

Would the 17s be the recommendation for general punters?

        • +2

Definitely recommend the 17s for live music.

The difference between these earplugs and generic cheap earplugs is that they use a filter which allows sound to still enter your ear, just softer. You'll have no problem talking to people or listening to music with them in. I own a pair of the 17s, and the sound is very natural. I usually forget I have them in after an hour.

I'm a little biased, so feel free to look up reviews and come to your own conclusion

          • @erikryder: I think what I've used previously had filters. Funnily enough they were also purchased from here, though it seems the company is no longer trading. This is what I've got. Absolutely rubbish. Thanks for the info… this is something I've really been meaning to get on to.

I've bought a few pairs of ACS Custom earplugs over the years, partly for work reasons, but also for live music. Honestly, the differences are stark between these kinds of things and most of the generic ones.

For me it comes down to the flat response curve - you are getting the sound you had before, but less of it. Something like the (otherwise excellent) Etymotic ER20XS mentioned in other posts here tends to affect the frequencies above 4kHz more than the frequencies below it, colouring the overall sound.

Plus, a custom-fitted set like these lasts longer than the silicone & foam that come with the generic ones and produces a perfect fit for your ears. The air can also pass both ways through this filter, so they're less fatiguing to wear.

A word of warning - getting an impression made can be a weird experience, and you'll want to let the technician know if you have any balance or auditory issues.

Oh, and I know you don't want them for this, but for anyone else reading - do NOT use these for things like shooting, hunting, nail guns, or other high-impulse environments. There are better-suited earplugs for that kind of thing.

      • Anywhere you deal with in SA for impressions? I'm using Etymotic ER2SE with the foam tips for band rehearsal/stage use, upgraded from se215's which didn't block anywhere near enough sound even with comply tips. They're an improvement but wondering how much difference could you reasonably expect going from these to customs given the ~7 fold price increase

        • In SA I recommend going to Attune Hearing for ear impressions. I get the hesitance - it's definitely an investment. I had a pair of universal earplugs before getting a pair of 17s, and now I could never go back. In terms of hearing protection, sound quality and comfort, there is a very noticeable difference.
