Superloop - No ID Requirements?

I swapped to Superloop yesterday - all online, really easy procedure, but I was struck by the lack of ID required to set up the new account. I recently tried to upgrade my Optus service and even though I was an existing customer, they insisted on me providing my ID all over again. So Superloop struck me as really weird in that respect.

Later in the day I activated a prepaid Aldi data sim in my tablet and even for a prepaid facility I had to provide ID, making the Superlook experience even stranger. Did anyone else have a different experience?

Sometimes they’ll use credit card details to verify your identity instead of your actual ID.

    • Interesting to learn, thanks. Didn't realise that was possible.

      • Because it is not :)

Ive never had to verify my identity for NBN providers, though ive never used the big ones like Telstra or Optus only smaller ones like ABB, Superloop, Launtel and Leaptel

    • Optus required it, even when upgrading (not happy about that, after what they did with my ID the first time round). Hence my surprise.

  • No ID check, but Superloop do a credit check.

    • That's new to me - I've looked at hundreds of credit reports and don't recall seeing a Superloop enquiry. Perhaps I wasn't paying enough attention, or perhaps they use Illion or D&D rather than Equifax.

      • I believe they use Illion.

  • It's a prepaid service, at fixed known location, attached to an Australian mobile number and an Australian payment card.

There's sufficient KYC in those 3 things.
