Reckon this is a good price? Worth the upgrade from my Baratza Encore, which I've used every day for 5+ years?
probably not worth it for the upgrade, unless you really like just filter coffee
I do. We only make filter coffee with single origin beans from boutique roasters
@SirFrankGrimes: Encore is fantastic for entry level and at its price point, but imo, the design is outdated and it’s not pretty to look at.
The Ode is a pretty safe hit for a medium-level grinder, and will look nice in your kitchen, and also has a small footprint. It is not without its nitpicks (but I can imagine there are fewer than with the Encore), but the general rule in the grinder world is that you will always find something to complain about, and there is plenty of competition out there.
I find the Hoff always has the most pragmatic and balanced reviews, which take into account not only objective coffee quality, but more consumer-driven values like user-friendliness, aesthetics, longevity, and price point. I don’t watch grinders at this price point much, but I know that people are generally very happy with the coffee from the Ode with gen 2 burrs (I.e. this grinder). If you are happy with the design and everything else, I think it’s a safe investment to get you through the next 5+ years :)@ts13: You’ve sold me on it! Thanks for the pragmatic reply. Very helpful!
@SirFrankGrimes: You won't be disappointed, I love mine
@SirFrankGrimes: The short form nerd advice is, if you only want the best possible coffee, you can probably get (subjectively) better grinds quality for the same(ish) money but at the cost of having to deal with shitty UX or modifications. Example, see the shit show that is the DF64. Some people recommend buying diff burrs etc. In my view it’s not worth the headache. The Gen 2 Ode will work fine out of the box, and will hopefully treat you well for the years to come! Investing in a good grinder will give you a great return on your money.
Unless you live in Melbourne, make sure you are using good quality filtered water too :) Happy brewing!Edit: I did a quick google, and the original Baratza Encore was released in March 2012! Take solace in the fact you’ve found a much more recent upgrade. Hahaha
Brutalist
Know nothing about these machines, checking out the review to see if they are any good, for espresso (don't use filter).
G1.1, and the 15% off code using zip brings it to $379.83.
Seems like the Ode 1 isn't any good (doesn't go fine enough and messy, retention and static (normal).
Not convinced it would be built to last like my em0480 conical Burr, which is still fine, particularly since using a DWT tool, although is noisy. $500 for something with nitpicking/issues isn't a good deal. You'd think they could include a scale with all the other electronic (be cool if the pad thing was also a scale).
This is for Gen2 which fixed some of the issues with Gen1 like the retention I believe. This is also exclusively for filter/brewed coffee, not espresso so definitely not for you if you are looking for espresso grinder.
Thanks for confirming, I gathered that from the video but wasn't sure.
Sounds like they have made some good improvements on the Gen2, still kind of pricey but coolyeah it is pricey but if you make filter coffee often, it's worth it.
Code doesn't work for me for Gen2
did you select ZIP as the payment method?
Oh right, forgot about that. Works now
love this grinder, makes really tasty filter coffee
