Need Recommendations for Webhosting for a Personal Website

wordpress based portfolio website, lots of media files(no Youtube or other social media embeddings all local files), main client base is in the US, UK, Europe and Australia (in that particular order), some Aussie webhosting are offering competitive pricing but I'm concerned about offshore speed, I wonder do Australian webhosts offer good speed for overseas visit?

  • No too bad to have VentraIP with a good optimized website, and cached enable (enventually CDN too), or like me, you can try Hostinger, based in Europe, so kinda central for most your website.

pretty happy so far, competitive pricing.

Cloudflare Pages may work. Export the site with the Simply Static plugin and I think Cloudflare Pages even has a drag and drop way to add the static html without needing git. Speed and uptime will be great, depending what visual page builder you're using. It's totally free as well. Updating the site is as easy as exporting the static files again and drag and dropping. Won't support dynamic content but unless you have a daily blog or have a comments section or whatever then you won't need it anyway.

Are you expecting a lot of traffic?

I think you'll be okay with any Aussie hosting (like VentraIP mentioned above), but have your domain proxied through Cloudflare (free tier). This is really easy to do. The benefit is that Cloudflare will be caching your images across the globe. Speed would not be an issue. Just make sure your images are the proper sizes for web.

  • Amazon Web Services Lightsail if you're comfortable setting it up yourself.

If not I can advocate for hostinger being great value for what it is.

  • Server location speed does really matter regardless of CDN or not atleast from my experience. If you're client base is around US/UK, I'd suggest a host close to there.

I typically suggest SimpleSonic to clients if you need something that's affordable (and stays affordable without cheeky renewal gimmicks).

Use Cloudflare DNS and proxy the site (benefit of speed and security).

Cloudflare Pages to host the site would also be excellent for speed as its fantastic imo but just make sure you do the work around and such to add the 404 page etc. Not the best option if your not too technical.

    • I'm trying Cloudflare pages, despite some glitches from my own website (which is being statically converted), I'm quite surprised that it is a free service, but if I want to use my own domain, do I have to transfer it from my current registrar to Cloudflare, when you said 'Use Cloudflare DNS and proxy the site', do you mean by the transfer or there's a way I can keep my domain with my current registrar and still have Cloudflare pages to use my own domain?

      • yep thats right. so u can just update the nameservers to cloudflares ones at ur current registrar and therefore ur domain's DNS will be managed by cloudflare and u can add custom domain in the cloudflare pages "custom domain" section and it would automatically add the dns records for u.i
