DELIVERED: 07-08th August

With the beautiful Xbox Showcase 2024 today, my Series X 1TB won't survive to store all those games

The official expansion card is "fairly cheap" compared with its RRP $549
I did check here before posting and there is no deal for that and the price isn't bad, the cheapest posted here before was $382.63

If you are after a cheaper alternative that works just like the official one, do your own homework to find a decent price:

If you are after something more hardcore ( I only found this out tonight ).
I did not find this "more cheaper" but:

  1. CY M.2 NVMe 2230 M-Key SSD to CF-Express: https://www.amazon.com.au/CF-Express-Type-B-Adapter-PCIe4-0-…
  2. The ONLY compatible SSD (Western Digital SN530 M.2 2230): https://www.amazon.com.au/Western-Digital-2230-1024GB-SDBPTP…

Or go with USB3 storage.
I do have a bunch of NVMe/enclosure and the games worked just fine but I cannot bother doing that.
The one I tried, even workes with Quick Resume but I cannot get bothered with that either, the console is fast on its own.

I am genuinely amazed that one would ‘need’ storage beyond 1TB on their X | S (as opposed to ‘wanting’), especially when it’s via an excessively overpriced storage medium @ $375+ (It’s similar to the cost of a new S console! ffs)

Multi-tasking/ playing multiple big file games is really that essential? Time management skills to play must be 🔥

    • +6

I play a mix of NBA, Call of Duty and a game with a story. Only just fits. Throw in my son who wants to play different games and yeh it’s a need. It’s a pain in the ass that it’s so bloody expensive.

      • +1

If I were in your position, I’d get the S instead and relegate that to host your kids games and leave the X to your use only… You’d get an extra controller to share between the X & S!

OP also suggests a USB3 storage for transfers as alternative.

      • +1

Same situation. I feel your pain.

Quick Resume is something most of us really like with Series X | S and most of us have Game Pass (Ultimate). 1TB is not enough. Yes, most of us workaround it, but I have multiple games that I own which have to be put in an external drive.

Microsoft should really stop that annoying whitelist requirement on SSDs. Just let us use a CFastExpress to NVMe converter with any PCIe gen 4 SSD.

    • You aren't wrong but personally, I wanna the extra storage for some time now more than just games, I wanna move all the games from the internal storage to the external storage.

Everybody knows or should know that SSD/NVMe has read/write limit.

Both PS5 and Xbox soon or later will poop the bed, PS5 storage is soldered on the motherboard while Xbox is a removable one but atm there's no way of reinstalling the whole system into an empty NVMe.

I have been playing on it since day one almost every single night, I wanna reduce the writing cycle into the internal storage until Microsoft:

      A) Stops this bs with restricted model NVMe allowed and
      B) Make it possible for us to reinstall the operating system into a new NVMe which right now requires Harry Potter magic to do so.

I prefer to fry a $375 storage than the console storage itself.
On my One S and One X, I had the same but running from a SSD. I cannot bother with HDD, it's cheaper per GB but slower

I see this and think why? Then I see BO6 is 310GB on Series S/X… which means if you install it on the series S, you can't install anything else lol

    • +2

That 310GB includes multiple CoD games though, BO6 is about 80GB.

      • +1

I just pre-downloaded the game and it's only 123GB on Series X which I believe it's only the campaign mode. It's the only mode I always cared anyway.

It's gonna be pure chaos to download this game close to the release date, by installing now, it might or might not install small updates which is a lot better/faster than downloading everything at once.

  • +2

You can get half an XBOX for that price…

    • +1

Do you get the XB or the OX?

      • XO is better

        • Just trim the excess X’s….the BO will do

    • So buy a PS5 then :)
You can use normal NVMe as external storage, you can have its controller and headset that only works with the latest devices so if you have old stuff, too bad, they aren't compatible.

As much as this storage restriction sucks, you do not need to buy this proprietary expansion, meaning, I already provided other alternatives which are far cheaper so although your statement is true, it isn't relevant because not many folks need or want this storage solution.

There isn't a ecosystem that will make you 100% happy, I mean, ask PC players what cost them to have everything running as they please or even pay $80 easily for a Nintendo switch game.

      • Nintendo Switch game are around $64.
PC players have to deal with high GPU prices, but graphics are better on PC :-)
XBOX you have gamepass which is is better than PS+

  • +7

Xbox must think they’re winning the sales race to pull BS like this. Someone in last place should be pulling out all stops to be consumer friendly and not keep forcing proprietary crap down people’s throats.

    • +4

lol reminds me of the vita and its memory cards….

      • +4

PSP also used an obscure proprietary memory card format. You think they'd learn for the Vita but no…

    • +3

I agree that PS5 approach is better but that is all.

Right now, PS5 internal storage which is the most important one is soldered AFAIK meaning if it dies, RIP you.
Atm, there's no easy way to reinstall the operating system on Xbox Series but it has a removable NVMe so you can install a new one and use Harry Potter magic to bring it back. PS5??? Good luck.

Sure, it does suck this proprietary crappy but it could be worse.
There are cheaper alternatives, you aren't forced to use Microsoft solution, you can even build your own Microsoft alike storage with the proper 2230 NVMe case and the compatible NVMe. It could have been a lot worse.

Good deal. On a stupidly priced product. Nothing against the poster, only MS. I'll pass.

  • +1

I’m amazed that they can put 2tb into such a small
device. I thought those Samsung t5 t7 SSDs were small (about the size of a bunch of stacked credit cards). This thing blows it out of the water (size wise).

Could you back up your hard drive with this (Mac OS / Time Machine)?

    • Nope, it uses CF-Express type which is not available for normal application.
It appears to be used by professional photographers and twice as expensive.

It will be cheaper for you to buy a SABRENT USB 3.2 Type-C which has a solid microchip controller inside and a decent 2280 NVMe.
You can have up to 10Gbps data transfer and it is DIY, no proprietary, and no, you don't need to have bachelor degree to put them both together.
You can have both solid speed and fair price for a solid backup solution.

      • +1

EDIT: You could buy a CFexpress Type B to USB-c reader and use this anywhere that uses USB-c
From a price pov, it is not worth imo

        • Thanks man, appreciate your input… sounds complicated… maybe I’ll stick with the Samsung t5 type.

  • +2

I could put this with my Sony Duo memory stick i got for my PSP!!! :(

  • For those like me who like to read about stuff you buy:

As I am looking into a way to backup this 2TB of data in case of failure ( sort of what Worf asked above ), you can buy good quality CF-Express Type B USB-c reader used by professional photographers ( the readers are fairly cheap ) and I crossed this video that disassemble this Seagate storage.

It sort of makes sense now why it is so overpriced: https://venturebeat.com/games/xbox-series-x-seagate-expansio…

I believe they have patched the ability to use the converter so they no longer work…. i was trying to get one month's ago. But no one reported them working.

    • Converter???

      • There is/was an adapter on AliExpress that allowed unsupported SD drives to work like this memory card.

        • Ahh I wouldn't trust on that either, I don't usually trust boards on AliExpress let alone micro-ship stuff.

I might grab one of those NVMe 2230 M-Key SSD to CF-Express to see what is up, as long as you have the compatible NVMe you are good.
If things change in the future, you just replace the NVMe.

  • I'm not able to see the price you've mentioned. Do I need to be on VPN to a different country?

    • +1

LOL well and truly over… gotta be quick.

    • Yeah, too late. It is back to $418 for me.
I have updated the title to EXPIRED coz OzBargain takes 30 days IIRC to do that on its own.
