I'm looking to purchase a product in the UK and it costs roughly 940 AUD + shipping 80 AUD through UPS = 1020 AUD. I've been looking through all the sites and old post but there seems mixed opinions to whether the GST 10% + handling fees would apply to goods < 1000 AUD.
Does the 10% + handling fee apply in this case as the total invoice is over 1000 AUD?
Yes, Customs adds the shipping cost to the item cost and if it's over $1k, you'll pay GST and duties.
I suggest sending it via normal UK post air mail. There's a high chance it'll get through without added taxes. Sending via courier like UPS means the GST free limit is much lower ($250) and you're guaranteed to pay.

So either select a lower postage option or try to find a 'discount' coupon to apply to get it under $1k total.
Postage cost is not counted if item value is lower than $1k. As long as the shipment is declared at AUD940 by the shipper, you won't pay anything on entry.
