CAT Jump starter - use to run microwave on a trip?

CAT Jump starter And Air Compressor CJ1000DXTAU

We are going for a short road trip and will have access to power outlets during the night.

We were thinking of bringing some frozen food and warm it up using a small microwave during the day. Might also use an electric kettle to boil hot water (coffee…).

Would the CAT (it has a powerpoint) be powerful enough to power up a small microwave and boil some water and still have enough of crank if we need to inflate the car tires during the trip?

Comments

  • no chance
google says a single 120v, 200W 'power point', so not even suitable for a 240v microwave, let alone the power draw a microwave would consume

    • Sounds like you looked up a non-Au model?

      • Must've because the AU one doesn't seem to have an AC socket at all so their point still stands, no chance of running a microwave from it unless there's USB powered microwaves now.

      • I just realised that. I guess we have to eat frozen food and drink cold coffee. Could be worse ha ha ha

It's not called cold coffee. It's called teachers' blend.

A frozen pie, wrapped in aluminum foil and placed carefully on the exhaust manifold makes a great treat after about 20 minutes of driving. Don't forget the sauce.

@MS Paint: Instructions not clear. Car now won't start. RACV says there are beef and gravy chunks in the intake manifold.

          • @MS Paint: "Mmmm, engine-block eggs. If we can keep these down, we'll be sitting pretty"

        • I swapped to drinking cold coffee some years ago, started one summer when I started drinking iced coffee with a teaspoon of ice cream and just kept drinking them through winter

If you use the cheap ice cream, halve your sugar as that crap has a lot of sugar but I no longer use it as it doesnt add the creamy top like the more expensive stuff

      • was just whatever local AU sellers had listed in their details/screenshots
        e.g https://www.4x4downunder.com.au/products/cat-professional-po…

I thought i'd try and elaborate more than 'no chance' :)

  • Thanks for the funny replies ha ha ha….

I still think the CAT jump starter is a good thing to bring on a roadtrip.

I will buy a 12v food warmer and a 12 v electric kettle. More safe that way.

A barbie on the exhaust manifold will be a treat after long days of driving ha ha ha…

If it’s not a regular trip why don’t you just buy a coffee and a pie/sandwich at bakery in a small town somewhere instead of spending money on 12v appliances?

      • +10

Some of the best bakeries are the regional town gems. Definitely not cheap anymore but they just have that little extra sprinkle of love.

You probably want to look into a sine wave inverter.

      • The power requirements of the device would be a good first step. I expect would need at least a 2000W inverter, and a battery/batteries (with suitable size cable) able to provide 165A.

Not exactly a cheap exercise when could just bring a butane burner as suggested…

A inexpensive portable butane burner can be used to heat a kettle and cook or reheat simple meals.

e.g. Gasmate Portable BBQ Butane Stove

      • Hi, might be a good option. Thanks

        • Trangia, even less weight and space. Moka pot and you're set for the caffeine hit.

      • what happened, they used to be like $10

        • A few year ago there was a crack down on the sale of portable butane stoves that didn't meet the safety standard. There was a large number of product recalls on those really cheap models. A Google search shows it was in the 2015/2016 timeframe.

The ones sold today should have a shut-off valve that activates if the stove starts overheating.

    • Plan ahead if you want to use 12V appliances.
The kettle will take 20 to 30 mins to boil depending on start temp.
The food warmers are, like the name suggests, better at keeping food warm than heating up cold food, but I guess left long enough while driving etc could do the job so long as you're not trying to cook.

I find this jump starter very helpful. It is very comfortable on my nipples as well.
