How Far Can We Push QLD $0.50 Public Transport

Hey,
Just a quick post about how far you may be hoping to push the 50 cent teavel from August in QLD.

I would like to try to get to Bundaberg from Brisbane but long distance travel is excluded.
I think you can get to Gympie North on the normal Translink service which is about 1/2 way, then maybe about $30 for a tilt train ticket?
About $25 saving on the current price (I think)

    Services
The 50 cent flat fare applies to all Translink network regional bus services in the following areas:

    • Bowen
    • Bundaberg
    • Cairns
    • Fraser Coast (including on demand)
    • Gladstone
    • Gympie
    • Innisfail
    • Kilcoy
    • Mackay
    • Rockhampton and Yeppoon
    • Sunshine Coast Hinterland
    • Toowoomba (including on demand)
    • Townsville
    • Warwick
    • Whitsundays

The 50c fares don't apply to intercity travel as these services aren't operated by Translink, so you can't get further north than Gympie North station unless you take a standard rate QR fare on the Tilt Train or similar.

      • 10-4. I was posting this hoping it would assist OP in figuring out how far they could get, I wasn't prepared to interpret it. Thanks

The train arrives to Gympie North at lunchtime, the tilt train leaves at 7:30pm. I'd rather spend the extra $25 and not but stuck in Gympie for 6-7 hours.

The question now is how do I pack in all the excitement of Gympie in just 6-7 hours? That nice gazebo looks a good 3 hours to properly appreciate alone.

It's missing the legitimately most interesting attraction in Gympie, The Bone Museum.

It depends on how little you value your time.

It depends, the 50c fare is only temporary for data collection. However if the data shows that:

      a) It reduces the overall traffic congestion we're seeing on the roads every day
      b) People are actually making use of the 50c fare and patronage is up across the Translink network

There would be a serious discussion in to permanently keeping fares 50c

Little experiments like this are great ways to start discussions about public transport use.

    • How about tourist? I like free music concerts, festivals, beach, botanic gardens, unique park/garden like Japanese garden or any other tourist destinations/attractions. Museums and art galleries are okay too.

How far are you willing to walk? If you walk from Gympie to Maryborough (about 85km) you can then get a Translink bus to Howard. From Howard it's only 72km to Bundaberg. Probably going to cost you $1 though as it's unlikely you would make it to Maryborough until the next day.

  • Don't forget QR Spirit of Queensland goes through Gympie at around 4.20pm most days.
