It can only do 16k lumens for 30 seconds, then throttled to 2000.

    • +1

that's why i left it out of the title. idc really, i bought it for fun. 16k is a party trick, 2k is plenty

    • Maybe I’m easily impressed but 2000 lm (if legit), is actually pretty beefy haha

      • -1

sofirns lumens, when tested has normally been overstated by 50%, i reckon 2000lm would be actually 1200lm

        • +4

I've read plenty of reputable tests on Sofirn torches and I reckon you're wrong on the vast majority of them. Measured Lm are often a little under, sometimes 10-15% but this is not unexpected given there are apparently different "standards" for measuring lumens. I'm no expert but I also gather measuring isn't straightforward, hence the number is a guide, not meant to be taken literally. In most cases your eyes won't pick up minor differences anyway.

In his Q8 Plus test Zeroair got the following impressive measurements:
          Mode—-Claimed Output—-Measured Lumens—-Tailcap Amps
          9—-16,000—-19223(0s)17397(30s)—-18+A
8—-na—-9290(0s) 8590(30s)—-8.85A (highest of stepped modes)
          7—-na—-4641—-4.75A
          6—-na—-1940—-3.81A

While 2000 lm may be a stretch, this is still one of the brightest sustained torches around - without getting into torches with active cooling (fans). I've always been torn between getting this or the Marauder Mini - this is 1/2 to 1/3 the price, takes regular cells, charges with USB and uses Anduril 2 for the UI. The Olight costs a lot more, but it also has a spotlight, red, green and blue LEDs and higher quality control - but I can't get over the proprietary cell and charger, and always pass it up.

        • See my comment below, I decided to get the Marauder Mini. Have same concerns on proprietary cell, charger lack of USB-C.
I do however see not having to use Anduril 2 as a positive. While Anduril 2 is great compared to some, it's still quite complex instead of the relative simplicity of Marauders and IF30 controls. Marauders a step easier than IF30 with the switch for flood & spot (but missing option to have both on)

          • @snuke: You can set Anduril to what you like and then put it in 'Muggle mode' for simplicity. It's so much easier to have all of your torches work the same way and instant access to moonlight, turbo, or the brightness that I set is fantastic.
I'm not buying another torch without Anduril.

  • Any recommendations for something that can hold more lumens for longer? Ones I can see, but do these have any of the 30 second limitations?

    SP36pro - 8000 - 89.99 (30%)
    BLF SP36 - 5650 - 78.99 (20%)
    IF30 - 12000 - 102.99

All of them will. Sofirn are decent/good/great value, I recently got a SC31 Pro, but they all run into heavy heat related throttling pretty quickly.
All lights will to varying degrees, the more you pay, the better they handle it.

I liked the idea of the IF30, a flood and thrower in one, more simple operation that is wife friendly with less special button clicks. But it has quite a few concerns about over running the battery into death pretty quickly.

Yesterday I purchased an Olight Marauder Mini - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/165803937852
With he flood/thrower toggle even more simple, far better constriction, hold high lumens for longer, no concerns over the internals like the IF30. Down sides - costs more, has proprietary battery and charger (not USB-C).

I did get it for $160.29, so that made the price over the IF30 easier to swallow for what I saw as benefits.
That eBay seller will offer/accept a 25% discount, making it $224.96. Then there is a 25% off code CBTFY25 (20% for non eBay Plus memebers) and I used gift cards with 5% offf.

      • Looking at the sofirn site the run time for the Q8 Plus looks good, for $72 will give this one a shot.

how many lumens in a car headlight -
For example, traditional halogen headlights typically produce around 700 to 1,200 lumens, while newer LED headlights can produce upwards of 3,000 lumens or more. High-intensity discharge (HID) headlights can produce even more lumens, with some models producing up to 4,500 lumens or more.

    So 16K is a lot.

Hope this works better than the stupid “Stoya edition” torch i got.

  • +1

Damn bought one for $130 last week, but then I specifically wanted 5000k temp.

  • I really want this but I already have the Q8 Pro and SP46 Pro… I need to start saving money..

    • +3

      really want this

      U deserve it mate

    • What do you use them for? Just curious.

      • +1

i use them on the farm or night road work.

        • +1

          Makes sense, thanks.

  • Thanks didn't need, but started the rabbit hole with flashlights so bought

  • The Sofirn if22a is better in every way. It's only $45.49 on Amazon today. Sold via the official Sofirn store.

    USB-C Rechargeable
Smaller and lighter this is only 280 Grams vs 900 grams.
    2100 real lumens
    21700 battery included
    697 meters

    • How hot does it normally get?

      • It warms up a bit of left on full for time, not worryingly so though.

It's quite a focused light, great for spotlighting but not for floodlighting.

    • +5

please don't believe this guy when he says it's better in every way. It's apples and oranges

      for example
Q8 Plus is also USB-C Rechargeable
      heavier but lasts way longer
      17397 real lumens (at 30seconds)
      3 x 21700 batteries included
628.9 meters so not much worse

Also the regulation on the if22a is horrific looking (it also shows that the if22a is 1457 lumens @30seconds, not quite 2100 real lumens)
high is just a steep decline from turn on so it just starts dimming the moment you turn it on

Did Wizard just get slapped? Bacons, there was a nicer way to say that. But not really.

  • +1

    Got one thanks!
SP40A is also on sale for 26.6 with the 30% off coupon. I think that's the cheapest one Ive seen.

    • +1

Yeah that's a great deal. Thanks for the heads up earlier.

  • Anyone who's deep down the rabbit hole able to provide some advice?

I'm looking to get my toes wet and upgrade from a Wuben C3 to a decent all-rounder.

I've looked at r/flashlight and that just made it more difficult to make a decision.

So far the Wurkkos TS22 or the Sofirn SC33 have caught my attention but I'd be interested to know of any other recommendations.

    • +1

Not deep into it, but I bought a few Sofirn torches last year SD05, HS10, HS40 and SP35. I use the SP35 and HS40. They're both nice but surprisingly, I find the HS40 get used more due to the 90 degree angle. It's more practical in the sense you can stand it up whilst doing other things and light gets projected better than a standard torch due to the raised height. Also useful when hanging it off the edge of a table, allowing you to provide light from above. I've used it when going for a run a few times a night and the angle makes it more comfortable to hold. Another plus is the magnetic base, which is useful when working around the car. Only downside is that the tint is a bit greenish for the 5000k version which is what I have, but by now I'm used to it and don't really notice it anymore. If that bothers you, apparently you can change the LED to a different one.

The SP35 has a switch button which is metal which is nice and both are waterproof. In hand, the SP35 is better in that it can get brighter and has a larger battery, but if using hands free I recommend a torch with a 90 degree design. Both of these won't get as bright as the two you are considering, but for my use cases, I don't often use the highest output mode.

  • this or s36 pro?

  • What do you guys use these for?

  • These things get hot. And bright. I got similar and there’s a lot of features built into them.

  • If you want to go down the LEP path I grabbed the Neal’s Gadgets unbranded one. The specs are
    output: 450lm
    INTENSITY :810,000cd
    Distance:1800m
There’s no real use for it other than playing around with it like it’s a light saber or pointing it at UFO’s.

  • Sorry if I'm off topic. May I know if it's legal to use this kind of torch for self-defense? I live in NSW and I have been assaulted by a group of teens…

    • +1

its pretty large and heavy, it might stun them for 5 seconds on turbo mode so overall it might deter them due to attracting attention but for a self-defence tool its not going to be effective. No chance of damaging eyesight so dont worry

      • +1

I just need to stun them and gain some time to run away. Never have any intention to physically fight back with the torch. I'll look for a smaller model that can fit in my bag. Seller recommends TS22 or SC33. Thank you for the information!
