  • Total beginner here, saw these f***kers on display in Singapore.

What would you recommend a beginner like me? I liked the black and gold colourway but don't want a ditzy too-tiny little guy either

    • Entry grade is a good choice for beginner but if you don't want a small one, MG SAZABI Ver.KA is your best choice although it's a bit expensive.

I started last year with an MG kit, and never wanted different grades.

I feel MG has the perfect size (not too tiny).

It's not over complicated too, as long as you do your research and use the right tools.

In short, I would recommend MG kits.

    • I myself just started 2 weeks ago with a HG Gundam MK II, then I stepped up to building 2 RGs since. The 2 RGs I built are still tough for me but were well worth it. Try doing a cheap HG to get into the grove. If you feel confident step it up to an RG or maybe MG.

The three primary sizes are 1/44 (high grade + real grade + entry grade) 1/100 (full mechanics + master grade), and 1/60 (perfect grade). Most people will recommend 1/100 if you don't want something small.

If you like gold / black, maybe look into gold frame amatsu Mina / hana, hyakushiki or strike freedom

    • Start with a HG - Entry grade is for kids.
You'll need to test out your tools b4 ruining an exy MG.
Nippers, liners, paint pens, you want practice on a cheap HG 1st.

I'd go HG, RG, then MG.

  • Added to cart waiting for my deal 30% shop back now haha

  • Any paint and essential kit recommendations?

    • +1

I don't paint my kit so I have no tips for that.

You do need good nippers. Some kits require a hobby knife as well.

I also seem to spend 90% of my time sanding.

You'll need a decent work space, especially to arrange your runners/sprues. First build, I spent way too much time trying to find the required runners because they were all in one big pile.

Cement, nippers (I love my Swiss army knife for this), putty, scalpel (those surgical looking ones), sandpaper (1000+ grit), airbrush, paint brushes, Tamiya paint, grey primer, tweezers for the decals, those soldering station with clips to hold on to small parts is very useful, spray box, fume mask.

For weathering, cotton buds, metallic ink markers, rough grit sandpaper if you wanna add some textures to the model showing wear and tear.

      • Have you tred the portable airbrushe?

        • +1

I only use portable airbrush. Don't have space for a full compressor. I have an old Tamiya one that runs off a RC battery pack. I think it's the first gen Spray works basic.

nipper/wire cutter to cut the parts from the "frame"

a small box cutter knife to clean off any excess plastic

a few sheets of sandpaper (probably one of each of 600, 800, 1000) to smooth out any cut marks

a fine tip black pen like ArtLine to fill in fine panel lines on the kit (try to find one that is oil base, water base paint will just rub off)

that should get you started :)

  • damn that is really tempting, but my MG Z Gundam 2.0 is still sitting in the "someday" pile……..

must resist stopping by Frontline Hobbies over the next few days………… (it is only 20 mins away from where I live)

You are too close bro, they have a lot of hobby tools and really hope they have a plan to open a store on the inner west.

      • I guess Hobbyco at QVB or Burwood would be the closest hobby shops for you. Not sure if there are other hobby stores in/near the inner west (they are rare breed these days)

anyway, I folded, I ordered this kit for click and collect last night, now I just have to find the time to stop by Frontline :)

        • I visit Hobbyco Burwood sometimes, but their prices are not friendly and they seldom have attractive sales. Their hobby tools like panel line or gundam maker always out of stocks. But at least they provide a offline shop which you can buy model.

  • I've been thinking about getting one of these, but I'm wondering how tall would this particular model actually be? Has anyone built it before or know where that info can be found?

Because I looked on a couple of websites and it never seems to mention the size.

I think it is about 20cm. You can find the DPs of Gundam on the wiki and get know the actual height of the hobby kit based on its grade.

      this might help:

the height looks to be around 2.5 packets of cigarettes :)

Thankyou, visual representations are usually more effective 👍

  • Unfortunately missed out. Back to its original price now.

    • +2

you never know, I have noticed that the price of this kit has gone from on sale -> full price -> on sale -> full price several times over the last 7 days or so.

it might be worthwhile to come back and check the price again over the next few days.
