The Gathering Storm is apparently the only essential DLC. It is currently 88% off, or $6.59, so it is almost twice the cost of the base game.
Potential alternative to going base game + one expansion; there's also the Platinum version which includes the main expansions plus some extras and is cheaper than the Anthology bundle listed in the OP. Having never played a CIV before, but looking for a good chill strategy game to get lost in, would you recommend I buy just the base game or are the expansions essential? Sounds like the Platinum version would be more than enough. I enjoy Rim world and AOE and the like
