Pioneer AppRadio Double DIN $299 @ JB Hifi

90

Saw this at JB HiFi and looks pretty cool, to upgrade old radio at cheap price.
http://reviews.cnet.com/car-gps-navigation/pioneer-appradio-… for a review. Only works with iPhone or iPad tho.

Seems a bit of a fad device that won't have very long longevity, with constant changes on the phone side of things.

    CD/usb/Bluetooth for cheaper…

That's a stupid comparison. You're comparing a unit with a screen to one that doesn't have a screen. The one you list doesn't have google maps built in.
I think its quite a good price for what you get, people pay this price alone just for a GPS. This unit has GPS, radio, USB, Bluetooth, Apps, etc.

I'm comparing to a device that also features a CD player, and can work with android devices, and won't be redundant after a software or connection change on an iPhone.

As I said, short term fad device imo.

        Appradio 2 supports Android devices…
And just looking at the site, the device didn't work when IOS was updated, until Pioneer released the update. I'd rather my devices just worked, especially the car stereo.

Wow a CD Player! Do you see the irony in your comment as you try and talk about the newer product having shorter longevity? Nobody who has a deck capable of USB/Bluetootch uses CD's anymore.
And this Pioneer unit also works with Android devices, either via Bluetootch or USB. Maybe get your facts straight before you post.

    • I want a Double DIN to replace my old double din player, a screen is more ideal as you can use GPS and see more stuff on screen quicker than a bit of rolling text.

I have a CD player with 6 disc changer, and I dont have any CD's anymore or would I ever use them since the Wife has a 120GB iPod Classic and 8GB iPod Nano and 16GB iPhone 3GS all with music on them alone.

you forgot the cassette deck :P without it it's a deal braker LOL

It also has an inbuilt clock!

    • +3

Which isn't silly, there is still alot of cars that don't have a clock in the dash. When your driving to airport or train station and have to keep looking at what time it is, the bigger the better I say.

      • +1

Agree. I have my seat so far back in my VT commodore that I need a big clock just to see the time. Does this head unit have a doof doof button? I am starting to get bubbles in my illegal tint so its value has decreased, this will surely double the value of my ride. Cheers OP

  • If only the tablet manufacturers settled on a universal size and input locations as well as collaborated with car manufacturers. Would be sweet being able to 'dock' the tablet in the car and use maps/phone/music etc all via the tablet.

    • Why dock when you have to take it in and out. Bluetooth sync with phone for all that is much easier and quicker

    • I'm still amazed at the prices of car stereos in comparison to any other consumer electronics..

You get a shitty LED display, attached to archaic technology, and you're expected to pay $200+ ?

Why hasn't someone cashed in on all these stupid cheap Android devices and made something to suit a car out of them?

      • This is more like what i think you mean but it's $300.00.
        I guess because it's a tablet and a car stereo -
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/7-Android-Tablet-PAD-Double-DIN-H…

        • Yeh, $300 and you get both.. Surely it would be cheaper to just build it into the same device.

In short: WHY ARE THERE NO CHEAP ANDROID CAR STEREOS!? lol

  • Reviews here, also says the screen is 6.1 inch -
    http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SPH-DA01-AppRadio-6-1-Inch-Dou…

    • Should also mention that a lot of those reviews aren't fond of the unit. Not just short crappy reviews either - lots of long in-detail descriptions about how slow and buggy it is :(

  • Most 2-DIN head units are located below eye level while driving. Not sure how safe it would be as far as maps go.

If you want the best in the business when it comes to automotive headunits, there's just one word. MirrorLink.

    • what about an ipad mini?

  • How easy are these suckers to install? Or how much to get it done professionally?

    • $100 tops for an install like that professionally. very easy to do, buy some adapters, and connect away.

      • Why bother with adaptors when a good pair of side cutters/pliers and a terminal block or just PVC tape works fine :D

        • I've never used adaptors, I actually solder all the connections and shrink-wrap them, but that's just me…

Honestly, the adaptors are a great idea. They save a heap of time, and make it incredibly easy to swap at a later date.

        • i dont trust pvc tape. if i did mine, i would get a harness for the factory end at least, save me from having to chop the factory bit up, then solder and heat shrink the wires for a good secure connection.

    • what car have you got?

      • +1

'82 Corolla but thinking of upgrading to the '84. Nicer carpet. What about yourself?

  • One of the problems of this unit is its compatibility with iOS6 / iPhone 5 so be aware
