Best Synology Server for Plex

I have a ReadyNas 212 and they have just rolled out an update that means I cannot download apps or even install my own apps anymore. I want to upgrade servers now and was wondering which was the best for what I want. I want it to be Synology, be able to stream 4k remotely, hardware transcode and have at least 4 disk bays. Ideally under $1000
Thanks

  • I'm using a ds918+ been rock solid for a long time so the logical choice would be the ds923+

When you say transcode 4k, you mean internally within your own network yeah?
I share my library to about 20 friends, but I never share my 4k stuff but it can stream 4k.

The DS923+ does not do hardware transcoding.

      • Oh wow that sucks.. What a bad choice on synology part..

I believe the 923+ is now based on a ryzen cpu, that can’t transcode (no igpu?)

I’ve been struggling with the same question- and the best answer seems a somewhat underwhelming 423+ or a second hand 918+

      • Thx mate had no idea

    Cheaper to build a PC to do it … AMD 5600G ~ $200, Mobo ~ $100, RAM ~ $100, Case ~ $100 …

  • You can stream 4k bluray remuxes with real-debrid these days. Need about 100mbs down.

    DS920+

This is the one everyone was using for Plex a couple years ago. Towards the end people said to wait for the new models but the new models are worse.

It's discontinued but looks like Mwave have some. Price isn't all time low but under $1000.

  • Thanks for the comments above. Anyone can share opinions on DS423+ vs DS920+? Looks like the main difference is DS920+ can expand memory up to 8GB while DS423+ can only do 6GB? Any cons having an old model like DS920+?

The RAM expansion is only what they will verify, but isn't indicative of what you can put in. I have 12GB in my DS918+ with no issues.

The DS423+ matches the DS920+ in some respects, but is less capable in others. I'm not sure there's any cons of having the DS920+ instead of the DS423+. You might risk Synology cutting software updates sooner due to it being an older model, but I wouldn't really bother taking that into consideration.

I would go for the DS920+ if you can find it for a good price, but otherwise, the DS423+ will also do what you need, I suppose. I just wish they'll release another DS9xx+ equivalent that's capable of transcoding.

  • Thanks guys. I have ordered the DS920+ through the above mwave link. The item has been dispatched. Looks like it was the last one. Hopefully it is still a new one. lol.

  • It's too bad we cant get the Ugreen Nas' in Aus.

    • I brought one, just used mail forwarding service.

      • Awesome, how much did that set you back all up? DO you like the unit?

    • myus.com forwarding service

  • I’ve been looking for sales of ‘DS923 and DS1821’ nothing comes up. Never a sale like $755

  • I bought my first Synlogy when I was working in PCCG, it was a DS411.
After that I upgraded to DS1512+ when I was working in the synology distie.
that was 2011, and I used DS1512+ for 11 years, and finally built a server rack at home because I was going to work from home permanantly.
Then I upgraded to Rackmount RS series.
Throughout my entire NAS journey, survillence and Plex are my main use.
Point is, with Plex, you can use a 10+ year old NAS, and still works perfectly.
But you will need good network infrastructure
