Has anyone bought any recently? Have been hearing mixed reviews and that the quality has gone down hill.

    • +1

Quality isn't what it once was, but I don't think the latest pairs are any different to other brands with lycra panels.

Certainly wouldn't pay full price though.

      • They are definitely thinner, the initial feel seems fine but the pair I got recently I have my doubts of their durability for sure.

  • +9

My original pairs were fantastic even if they are abit holey now, the new ones honestly suck in comparison and are just rebranded Chinese underwear.

  • +1

Any cheaper alternatives with same material/quality?

    • +4

Recently purchased these and have worn a few times. So far so good. Quality appears to be similar to my original 4yo StepOnes. But can't yet comment on longevity.

    • I recently bought JoxSox, which I'm really enjoying. Great fit and comfort.

Although, its the same price if you're buying 17 pairs of Step One at this price, which I've just done. Step One still slightly better but both great.

  • +2

Yeah originally these were the best… but the quality is totally different now material thinner and not as premium feeling… Not to mention the slight variation in their sizing over the years. Id pay $15 max for these now…

    • -3

You can get 5 pairs of undies for $15 from bonds.

  • Buy 4 get 4 free is a good deal, time to replace my 5 year old pairs from step one

    • +2

Be careful. My 5 year old Step Ones are still going strong. The ones I bought last year are of noticeable lesser quality. I prefer my Tradies.

  • +10

Already have swapped same pair 3 times in less than 6 months. Can confirm the quality has gone down so much. The holes that develop are on the stitching where groin part is. But also looks like the bamboo material breaks down.

    • +2

Cheers was going to order but now not

    • +3

I concur. The quality of these are terrible now.

The elastic bands on all mine all are warped with loose stitching.

      • +1

It's weird, my very first batch pairs I got maybe 4 or 5 years ago the waistband got all warped after maybe 1-2 years. Then another batch I had seem to be fine (they clearly changed the waistband at some point). Then the most recent is heaps thin and I think will crumble in other ways like easternculture mentioned..

Going to try another brand next I think.

  • What's the better alternative these days? There are soooo many

    • +1

The Kmart rip offs have been pretty good, getting 12 months out of it so far. I bought premium bonds ones at same time and the Kmart ones are keeping up as well as the bonds.

Are there any alternatives that don’t say ‘Tradie’ on the elastic…I just can’t

    • JoxSox worth looking into. I grabbed a load recently and really enjoying them.

  • +2

If you grab the Black with Fluro Yellow they are $10.80 a pair.

Grabbed 10 pairs of these in blue for $100 delivered recently, so far would recommend. Unsure of the longevity of them at this stage though since I'm rotating through 10 pairs. For the price I'm pretty happy. I do prefer the fabric in the StepOne's marginally but as everyone else has been mentioning the quality has taken a massive dip. 17 pairs at $12.76 isn't too bad, but shouldn't have to be rotating through 17 pairs of undies in order to get them to last

      • I've had these (tradie) for years and for me the quality has been good… even surpassing the one step pair i had. When they are on sale, i think they are a good deal.

    • These are 100% polyester.
      I'd recommend the Bamboo version.

  • +4

Not even at this price are these a bargain. A once quality item is now cheap junk relying on their good name until people catch on that this is far inferior to what it used to be.

  • nowadays these seem to have a half-life of around 12 months. find myself buying a set every year n replacing half my drawer

    • Stop supporting them in that case. Replacing every 12 months is such a huge waste of $$$

      • +1

I remember the days when the bonds undies and socks used to last like 3+ years

I used to rarely shop for undies and socks.

        • Unfortunately someone doesn't see eye to eye with us with the neg they gave me. They prefer buying expensive undies that don't last 🤷

  • For all the comments about quality, surely buying multiple pairs means that you extend the life of the pairs themselves?

I probably have 20 pairs of all different brands, I reckon 5-7 of those are step ones and I would get at least 2 years out of them before I consider throwing and replacing.

I get that if you only had 5 pairs and had them in high rotation that they would last a lesser amount of time, but I reckon that's the same for Kmart, tradie, tackle and the others

    • I wear mine once weekly (rotating with other brands) and they have been replaced 3 times so far

    • You're not wrong in that particular use case, they're certainly still decent if you can get them to last, but the main issue comes from the fact a lot of us have experienced the StepOne's in particular lasting a lot longer in the past before the quality being cut to what it is now

  • Just bought another 17 pairs. Had only just bought 15 pairs of Joxsox & a load of Bamboozle.

$12 for a pair of Step One is great value.

    • Joxsox is cheaper though? What are your thoughts? Was just about to try joxsox after reading comments in this post.

      • I really like them. I was quite sceptical initially considering their regular price is so much cheaper. But But I'm finding the quality & importantly fit to be excellent. Washed them a few times so far and no degradation. Zero issues.

I think Step One has a marginal lead in quality. They seem slightly thicker. But I'm very happy wearing either pair.

        • Thanks for the reply. I still have most of my Step Ones from a few years back. Some of them needed to be chucked.

Been waiting to restock but the quality drop comments have me concerned.

          I don't need more than 10 pairs.

          I guess the question is:
          - 15 joxsox for $135 ($9pp)
          Or
          - 17 StepOne for $217 ($13pp)

I'm inclined for joxsox just based on their sale price?

  • +1

    Both are great imo.

JoxSox are a more silky feeling, while StepOne a firmer & thicker feel.
I'm enjoying Jox more atm but perhaps because they're new etc.
