3M Command Large Adhesive 12-Pack $6 + Delivery ($0 C&C/In-Store/OnePass) @ Bunnings

2470

First post - thanks for all the excellent deals over the years. Hopefully this is useful for someone.

Not sure if this is a pricing error as the 4 pack is $6.98.

In any case I have ordered a few packs for future use I prefer to avoid nails and they have done a reasonable job for me.

Thanks OP! Looks like RRP is $19.28

  • Thanks OP. My partner refuses to use anything other than these for hanging photos and pictures.

I tried another brand once. When it was time to remove, it ripped off a chunk of wall paint.

Never had that issue with 3M.

These work great if installed correctly - just be aware that they don't have an indefinite shelf life in the box - I have had a few spares "dry out" on me after a few years, so if you're thinking of buying these in bulk to use years down the track you may come unstuck literally and figuratively…

    • I've got the same experience! But if you keep them in the packaging until ready for use, would it still have the same problem? Mine dry out only because they've been removed from the original packaging

      • They dry out a little more slowly but they still dry out, even in the packaging.

        It isn’t hermetically sealed..

The adhesive dries out and hardens over any length of time. Not as much of an issue when it’s already on the wall but definitely when not used for long periods.

        ~20y of observational data here..

      • nothing last forever…

    • Even on the wall, they don’t last long sadly. The adhesive between the part that sticks to the wall and then “Velcro” drys and falls apart

      • Hmm. I've had very good experiences with these?
Maybe because the air gets reasonable moist in winter and gets in there? Idk.

But i'm a 'half the weight limit the packaging claims' type of person.
So if it says will hold up to 2kg, and my thing to hang up is 2kg, i'm using two of the things which they claim holds up to 4kg.

    • 100% true, bought many of these bulk sometimes back, was trying to use recently, pretty much useless.

    • I’ve used these for years.
I think the oldest was 3 years old in my old house and was holding fine

  • Purchased a couple. Thanks OP!

As useful as these things are, and I use them a lot, I've always found them overpriced

    • +1

Theres something contradictory about your comment, you use them a lot but are too expensive. If you use them a lot, i interpret that as you see value in the product. What do you say your honor?

      • +1

Same with Apple products. They are great but too expensive IMHO and apple try to lock you in with any opportunity they have

      • +4

"Emus live in pairs, or alone, or in groups. They mostly. feed at night… or during the day"

      • +1

It's not contradictory. It's expensive af for what it is, a sticky tape.

    • These days you can get 'home brand' types that do probably work same same but different. Really, you ARE paying for the brand if you're buying 3m.

I agree with /u/Sweetnsour, there's something odd about hearing you describe such a niche product that you use a lot, as 'over priced'. Over priced compared to…..? Because it sounds like you're saying 'these should be cheaper'.

Why? Why should they be cheaper? Are you sure you don't mean 'these are more expensive then i want to pay for them'? or 'These are more expensive them i think i think a bit of plastic with adhesive on the back should be'?

Gotta remember - iirc? - 3m are the original. It's like saying the space saving 'vacuum bags' and whatever original 'brand name' they were, when they were new in like the 80's were 'over priced'. Really, you've got to just be saying 'this is more expensive then i think this simple product should be'. And you're likely right. And i guess once the product comes out after abunch of testing, and research and development and stuff, this is true. Because then generic copy cats come out with a cost only factoring in parts and labour say, at like half the price.

Thanks for coming to my TedTalk.

We did a full wall hang of picture frames using these. So like 15 small picture frames for a feature wall.
We cleaned the walls, wiped everything down with isopropyl alcohol, let it dry, used more of these adhesives than required by the weight ratings, and after the 6th month mark we have had frames start randomly falling. I think something like 6 have come off the wall so far. Ripping the paint off too.
I won't be using them again.

(Edit, it's been a while since we did the project, but to just correct for my memory, we followed the instructions to the word on installing, Whatever it said on the package, we did.)

      Nano tape

    • Headache lol.

Most people don't know you can get different ones for different load ratings, but seems like the adhesive tape part is the weak point. Maybe need to use more, top and bottom.

Not sure which ones I've got but been lucky and nothing has moved (got a power board in kitchen and two long strips, weight of plugs hasn't moved).

It doesn't hurt to press them together again routinely as well I think.

I don't bother cleaning and wiping down the walls and I have heavy frames (7-10kg on the 6kg rated adhesives) that are still up after 4 years…
Guess it truely is a YMMV scenario

      • I also don't bother cleaning walls and mine has been up for 3 years, never had one fall using these strips. I even cut them in half, but still have less weight than the limit of the strips.

    • FWIW I always use more strips than the recommended weight rating (like double the strips)

      Have never had anything fall

Having said that, like others have mentioned, these Velcro types do weaken if stored for a while. The glue between Velcro part and backing is not great

Using IP alcohol on walls probably isn't a great idea as its most likely a strong water based solvent similar to methylated spirits/ethanol used to clean up water based paint. This could have been the reason the paint ripped off.

    • wiped everything down with isopropyl alcohol, let it dry, used more of these adhesives than required by the weight ratings

Did you apply pressure as directed (you likely did, i know), AND wait a good amount of time for the fixtures adhesive to bond to the paint before using? It says 1 hour of something, but i've been known to leave things a couple hours, even overnight, for the paint+adhesive to bond. Also, hot/cold, air moisture probably factor to.

      Ripping the paint off too.

That could actually be an issue with your PAINT and how well it's bonded to the wall/plaster. There's a reason they say soap scrub, sanding, possibly then a primer, then PAINT, and…consider the temperature and moisture in the room/walls. Because you don't want bubbles and crap.

But, often you can skip a lot of that and it'll be fine. BUT, scrape with a fingernail, bump the wall, attempt to scrub something off, and the paint comes off.

Don't get me wrong, I've gotten the occasional 'what the F was that noise?' of something falling from the wall too. But 80% of the time, especially since i double the weight limit - Package says holds 2kg, treat it like it means 1kg - my 3m strips (plus some generics) have been fine. But maybe i've got great environmental conditions and a solid paint job.

I've got multiple heavy duty 3m's holding up some curtains on a rod. Only the middle 3m gave me issue, and i reapplied it. No problem since.

  • I use tbddd alot for pictures. This is a steal. Thanks

  • Why so cheap
