AmEx Is Moving My Platinum Edge Account to Latitude

It almost sounds too bizarre to be true, but still.

Got a call from someone identifying themselves as Amex who wanted to speak with me about my Platinum Edge Amex card. I politely told them I'd call back at a trusted number, which I did.

Turned out, the call was legit. I was informed that my Amex account is going be moved over to "Latitude" in the next month. Presumably, to "Latitude Financial Services", but the rep could not not confirm exact details and told me I'd receive a snail mail letter.

I was like, WTF, seriously? Why would you do something like this for a decade-long loyal customer? and why do you think I'd agree to this handover?

I'm going to transfer out my remaining points and close my Amex card of course. But I can't help wondering, is anyone here going through a similar experience with Amex?

An analysis has been made, to include an estimate of the number of people that may leave, and they still deemed it a viable business move to cut costs/increase profits. You simply don't matter in the equation.

    • Figured that much :) I've been always using up my annual Travel Credit!

  • Did they give you a timeframe?

    • They only said "next month"

Are you sure this is not part of the DJ's card program change from Amex to Latitude?

    • The only Amex card I have is "The American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card".

Why would they move you if they are still offering the card?

    • No idea, I couldn't get a the "right" person from "credit department". I suppose I have to wait for their paper letter.

Sounds like maybe an error on the backend?

    It matches what's going on with the DJ cards;

"In February 2024, David Jones communicated early details of the new credit card program to be provided by Latitude. If you have an active David Jones American Express Card, David Jones has advised us that you will be transitioned to the new David Jones Latitude card in mid July 2024."

    • I used to have a DJ card, but I closed it 3 yrs ago.

They will be referring to your closed DJ card..might be a few $ credit on it (maybe a refund you forgot about etc)…or Amex just being AMEX.

        • AMEX being American….express

I haven’t gotten any of this information and I have a platinum edge card.

Stuff like this is always communicated in blocks so their comms channels don't get hammered.

They could call it the Platitude account then.

What the OP has described seems very unusual given they're actively (but not overtly) trying to poach existing DJ AMEX cardholders to either the Plat Edge, Qantas Ultimate or Essential Rewards cards.

  • They're still advertising the card on their website with a sign up offer!

If the card was going away soon, it would very unlikely they'd still be promoting it. Maybe more investigation needed, but good luck talking to the no-hopers in the Phillipines. I have given up on them.

  • An update: they did cancel my Plat Edge card, but they also did issue a new one, and moved my balance and points over to a new account.

I have no idea why, the only explanation I was given "the credit department had to do it due to a technical error".

Now my concern is whether my travel insurance for a trip purchased with the old card is still valid. When I ask them, they told me to get in touch with Chubbs, their underwriter. Too much hassle, I'm going just buy a one-off one from Southern Cross or similar.
