Catch - Returned Item and No Refund

Extremely annoyed at catch at the moment and hoping for some guidance on what I can do next.

Quick summary of events up to this moment:

Ordered item off Catch (via a marketplace seller) item was stated as brand new and box in perfect condition.

Item arrived box had been opened and damaged, sent the seller photos and advised it could not have happened during postage due to bubble wrap etc and a box does not “open” during postage.

Seller agreed and said I can send the item back for a refund

Item returned paid $20 for shipping with tracking, returned the item to the address he provided, it was a house address and not where the item was delivered from.

5 days later seller has ghosted me, he now has my money and the item. Contacted catch who said they cannot assist as it’s a market place seller.

I would normally credit card chargeback but I paid via afterpay as I had a promo.

My question is can catch legally do this and just say it’s not our problem even though the seller is listed via their marketplace? And if they refuse to assist, what are my next steps, consumer law or a regulatory body maybe?

Thanks

Reach out to Afterpay as they will have policies in place for this

    • Thanks, I didn’t even think of that I just assumed as afterpay is not a credit card company they won’t assist. But will see what they say

What a joke. Catch are responsible for the conduct of the sellers on their platform. They certainly allude to it in the Catch Marketplace FAQs:

What is a curated marketplace? Catch is a curated marketplace platform where new sellers and products undergo a screening process and are approved only if they meet Catch values. We create a unique shopping experience by selecting sellers who can list products that are safe, high quality and provide value for money to our customers. Our sellers are also trusted to provide excellent customer service and reliable shipping.

Hold Catch to task, and begin by dropping a review on the Catch Product Review page. You can see a few of the most recent reviews are about bad experiences with marketplace sellers and the Catch customer reps seem to respond quickly there.

    • Thanks for the info, I think this might be the best way to approach this, socials and websites. And thanks for the blurb from their site that will use this. I had a look through their marketplace sellers PDS and it says similar stuff so let’s see if it holds true

  • If it's a credit card in your AfterPay account, can't you still do a chargeback?

  • Why you pay return cost for mistake by seller?

Reach out to Catch, they should have sided with you for this issue. If you did, try again to see you are getting different outcome.

I paid return cost because the seller said he would reimburse the postage cost. So now I’m out of pocket the item, the money for the item, and the $ I paid for return postage.

I really got screwed over here!

      • What normally happen for reimbursement is the seller pays you first before you return. For seller the easiest way to handle this by just providing prepaid return label.
