    1TB NAS, nice price.

  • Theres gigabit ones readily available on ebay. Just something to think about, although they are $89 compared to $85.

but this is the gigabit version… :S Link

Oh god. I seriously need sleep. I really should read properly instead of skim reading.

        • I was going to grab the $169 2TB WD Live from DSE, but I waited as I don't need 2TB of storage atm, this price is all i wanted to pay…

  • I'm a little technologically retarded. How does this work? Does it hook into the network and just come up as an external drive as a USB one would?

    • Yup, an Ethernet plug from this into your router/modem and install that CD, that's it…

    • Doesn't show up as a external drive, you have to connect to it as a network share.

    Nice, Thanks!

  • Anyone knows what sort of speed is expected from this one (my setting is computer -> wireless N 300 -> router -> gigabit lan -> NAS)

    • The disk read/write speed will likely be the bottleneck if you're directly connected to the gigabit as well (so perhaps 60-80 megabytes per second).

However in the case of your wireless, 37.5 megabytes per second (300/8) is the best theoretical speed, though you won't get that - maybe 20-30 megabytes per second.

  • Word of warning, I bought one of these from MSY a while back. The software that comes with it doesn't work properly which means that you can't really use it as a NAS. I looked up the issue on google and it was a known problem with the software which was never rectified by W.D.

Personally I didn't put much time or effort into trying to fix it but essentially it is only recognised by the PC it is directly plugged into, and wasn't recognised via the router.

I'm not saying you'll definitely have the same issues as me, but I'd say it's likely, and i'm not saying that you won't be able to solve the problem but for me it wasn't worth the effort.

never had any issues with mine, recognised by all computers on the network. Maybe it was a network issue with yours? Best of all being able to access it when away from home, without computers on was a bonus at times.

That's weird. I purchased one of these drives a few months ago for the same price and it works perfectly fine as a network drive.

That said, I have moved on and upwards from this drive to the 2TB MyBookLive. The MyBookWorld unfortunately has woefully slow write speeds due to the slow processor onboard. The MyBookLive has a substantially beefier CPU and 40+MB/sec write speeds.

      • That's my alternative, would you reckon its worth paying $84 more, as I really wanted to buy it !? :S

I'm using my MyBookLive for media storage, so it was getting cumbersome for large file transfers. I guess it depends on your particular usage scenario.

The one thing I miss on the MyBookLive, that the World Edition had, was the built in torrent client.

For my usage, the MyBookLive was worth the extra dollars.

        • Thanks doze !, you gave me a new leaf to chew on… lolz

    • it was a known problem with the software which was never rectified by W.D.

are you sure ? cause its still selling worldwide… lol

i'm not saying that you won't be able to solve the problem…

then whats the problem ? ;)

    • "Personally I didn't put much time or effort into trying to fix it but essentially it is only recognised by the PC it is directly plugged into, and wasn't recognised via the router."

Aren't you meant to plug this directly to the router?

  • Is 1 TB really enough for all my home network data? e.e. if my 3 latop hardrives all filled with 350GB data, does it mean this WD MyBook World 1TB is going to be completely filled up on its 1st backup?

    • +1

Obviously it will…, but why would you want to store 3 laptops worth of stuff on 1 x 1TB drive ?, that's when you spend more and get a 2,3 or 4 TB drive, your circumstance needs more TBs… lol

My purpose is to use this as a multimedia/NAS device, with the odd torrent capability, not full backups…

  • Presumably you can put in a bigger drive?

  • Runs sabnzbd, sold!
