Effective August 17, we’ll no longer accept American Express as a form of payment on eBay since we have been unable to agree on terms that are acceptable to eBay. You’ll still be able to use a wide variety of credit and debit cards such as Visa and Mastercard, and other payment methods such as PayPal, Zip and Afterpay.
To continue having a smooth checkout experience after 17 August, use the link below to add another payment method.

But you can add Amex to your PayPal account, and use it to pay for eBay purchases?
I’m hoping so!
Yes till PayPal doesn't agree on terms with Amex, or eBay doesn't agree on terms with PayPal.
I'm sure you still can use Amex via Paypal
Yes, you can.
I just did, a couple of weeks ago.
.Did you timetravel to after August 17 to check?
@SlickMick: I completely misunderstood the question, haha
Note to self:
Do not Forum, while half-asleep.
Personally I've shifted the majority of my spending from eBay to Amazon since their Australian launch in 2017
same way better
Everything eBay does seems directed towards cost-cutting - rising selling fees, the erosion of selling offers for sellers, postage discounts becoming an eBay Plus benefit only… so cutting AMEX is almost certainly because they don't want to eat the higher fees anymore.
According to this page the fees for 0.9% for Visa/Mastercard and 1.3% for Amex.

One way to look at it is the fees for Amex are 44% higher, but the other is it's only 0.4%….
Amex has always had sky high fees. I know several businesses that impose 0% surcharge for any credit card but Amex, which gets 2%. Costco (an American company) doesn't take Amex at all.
I sell on eBay every day and I doubt I'll be affected by the Amex closure. The people who have Amex cards all have a visa or mastercard anyway.
People love Amex because it pays them 'perks', but guess where the perks come from and who pays for them?
Costco used to take Amex when they first opened.
JB Hi-Fi used to impose a 2.65% surcharge on Amex, but stopped that a few years ago
stopped the 2.65% or stopped taking Amex ?
Stopped the 2.65% surcharge
As an Amex user you are correct that I also have an alternative card. However, the acceptance of Amex does actually influence my purchasing. If I am purchasing a product that I might want additional warranty, damage, fraud or theft protection on I will absolutely prioritize a retailer who accepts Amex. For example a phone, electrical product or something I'm not 100% sure on I'll only put on Amex.
Lol, I keep getting negged for telling the truth…
I keep getting ignored for telling people to seek mental help
There are cheaper alternatives to Amex for the merchants. This isn’t really surprising.
the world won't stop if everyone stop accepting amex
