      thanks karen

  • +2

Why only Sydney is HND and the rest of us (MEL and BNE) is stuck with NRT? WHY Qantas?

    • +2

Why indeed. Both Qantas and JAL were doing MEL<>HND last year, and both have switched back to NRT. Sooo rubbish.

    • +9

Landing slots at Haneda are at a premium. And I'm guessing Sydney and Tokyo have stronger ties in terms of business headquarters than other cities in Australia. So other Aus connections to TYO (which are comparatively more likely to be leisure-based travel and less profitable) would be shunted to NRT.

    • +11

I genuinely don't get the hate for NRT. When I used to travel to Tokyo frequently, I much preferred NRT funnily enough.

It's a ~50-60 min train ride vs. a 30-40 min train ride to HND, but the train is a proper airport train with luggage space, spacious cabins, are almost always less than half-full, and comfortable enough to sit down (almost always with a free seat next to me) check emails and get some light work done. Keisei Skyliner to Nippori, or NEX directly to Tokyo / Shinagawa / Shinjuku are genuinely really convenient.

Every time I've been to HND, I've just been sandwiched on a Keikyu Airport line train, or needing to go out of my way to get onto the Monorail (for which I have to end up sandwiched onto a Yamanote train to get to Hamamatsucho).

  • +8

Not bad for direct flights, but Qantas… ugh

  • +20

I'll take JAL or ANA over Qantas any day.

    • Who wouldn't?

    • whats wrong with qantas? i've taken both ANA and qantas and both are fine…

      • +2

Not sure. Recent QF flight to Singapore had the following:
        - good hardware, then Finnair jet was great for family with young kids with the couch style seats
        - food… QF catering is bit of a joke. Limited options, ran out options when reaching row 4, no book a chef option and the "Neil Perry" menu was easily one of the worst inflight meal served.
        - chaos at the airport at the gate. No sparate queue for priority boarding.
        - lounge… Crammed due to Qantas handing out a lounge pass to everyone.

Flights with CX ANA and KE over the same 12 month period offered a much better product.

Further more, QF has been too busy running market campaigns and inflating their QFFprogram than running an actual airline.

Time to scrap DSCs and jack status renewal and attain thresholds.

800 SCs for Gold Renewal and 1,500 SCs for Platinum renewals

    • +3

Agree! Qantas plunges in rating from 5 to 17? And the way they treated their employees? Qantas should be embarrassed of itself for its declining values. They are not properly organised. My last experience with Qantas wasn’t pleasant, 3 seats we were on were dirty, tablet for IFE wasn’t working, tiny serving of meals.

  • +8

Huge sale for $1k on economy…Shocking haha

    • +17

Yeah this is not good. $800-$1000 return with JAL/ANA is what you want.

  • +17

    $1k is normal price lol

    • +4

      For Qantas is not.

Qantas normal is charging you $2000 with 6 hours delay outbound and another 4 hours delay inbound. If you wanna cancel the flight? Yes you can. You will receive voucher which is useless and give you hard time if you want cash.

      • -2

not all qantas flights are delayed, we can't assume every qantas flight is going to be delayed (6 hours delay outbound and 4 hours delay inbound)

yes its unfortunate if your flight is delayed but doesn't happen all the time.

We are quick to give bad reviews to qantas when flights are delayed but we won't give good reviews when flights are on time do we?

        • +2

You want people to give good reviews when qantas meet the bare minimum expectation of being on time?

          • @MambaZone: so if its on time, you don't give any good review so you're expecting flights to depart 2 hours earlier before you give a good review on qantas which they can't do.

if its running on time great, if its delayed then not great - i'm not going to win you over unless you want a bucket of gold as well for checking in

        • Imo the way they handle delay or cancellation is the problem. That’s why i rather not take qantas too unless it’s a bargain flight

        • +2

Qantas should be embarrassed of itself for it’s declining standards. It is undeniable that Qantas has been disappointing so many of its customers and employees.

  • I need flights for mid Sep and return early Oct. Wonder if ANA/JAL will have another sale soon..

  • +4

had a great experience with ANA recently no way i would consider flying with qantas for the same price or more lol

    • Exactly! ANA or JAL are around the same price and are so much better than Qantass

  • Does anyone with Japan-trip experience have any insight to the likelihood of sale fares in October? Looking to travel then and unsure how long to wait for pulling the trigger on booking for a family of 4.

    • +2

Last year, I booked a 28 October flight on 13 September on JAL with some legs operated by QF for $1K:
      MEL-SYD-HND, HND-SIN-MEL.

Look up past sale dates here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/jal.co.jp

And don't assume you have to wait for an 'advertised' sale.

      • Thank you - decent stopover system there too, not excited about excess stops with 2 young kids in tow!

        • +2

I assume you're aware school holidays start 2nd week of Oct, so sale fares probably rare but not impossible.
Take them out of school early / return after school resumes for T4 if you can and want to take advantage of cheaper fares.

  • -1

Anyone know if we can expect to see discounted flights anywhere between 15 Dec and 15th of Jan?

    • +10

my crystal ball says….. travel outside of school holiday periods if you want discounted flights…

    • i wish right :(

  • why is Qantas telling me an extra 35kg bag is going to cost over $1200 return..

  • +7

Never travel to Japan in August/September if you can avoid it. the summers are brutal

  • Qantas you can do better!

  • +5

I've just got back from Japan flying ANA for first time. They were pretty good and about $1k return from Sydney. I got free return domestic flights between Tokyo and Osaka too by choosing multi city on their website.

What surprised me was the international flights were both less than half full. Many rows were empty.

  • How do I find quantas points deals? The amount of points I need for any GC/Bris to Japan/China/etc seems wildly expensive + the tax makes it basically unviable to utilise.

    • +2

How do I find qantas points deals?

      1) reach QFF Plat status
      2) book 353 days out
      3) still pay a shedload in tax & charges

    • +1

It is important to know the distinction between Classic Reward seats, Classic Plus Rewards, and Points Plus Pay.

Classic Reward seats are a fixed points cost based on distance and usually offer the best value for your points, so should be the focus of your efforts. However, their availability is very limited and it can be extremely difficult or impossible to find those seats (especially in premium cabins, on popular routes, and/or during peak periods).

Points Plus Pay used to be prominent on the Qantas website and is the worst way of using points. It fooled many people into thinking that they would have to use hundreds of thousands points for an economy international seat. This no doubt benefited Qantas very handsomely (and deliberately) over the years, but fortunately has now been de-emphasised on the website.

Classic Plus Rewards were recently introduced and offer a new option that typically costs quite a few more points than a Classic Reward seat, but with theoretically better availability. These may be a necessary compromise if you cannot find Classic Reward seats. See guides such as The Ultimate Guide to Qantas Classic Plus Flight Rewards and Your in-depth guide to Qantas Classic Plus Rewards.

  • +3

No deal. ANA is merely 200 more.

    QF? No thanks.

    • -1

      Relax, it's economy

      • "economy", comfort/better product matters even more in cattle class? Otherwise, might as well do budget.

        • Seat pitch and width are basically the same. What comfort offerings you talking about?

          • +1

@TightAl: Food. Entertainment. Outdated interior. Luggage allowance ANA is double of Qantas in econ from memory. Overall QF product is pretty rubbish and getting to what BA offers.

Definitely nitpicking. Equally speaking, might as well fly budget?

            • @Chinese: Not to mention over the years of traveling, only had a damaged luggage with a Qantas flight.

  • Thanks! I just booked some flights from BNE in Feb that I was watching this week. $3,204 Qantas for the family vs $5,953 with ANA at the moment. Nice to have a decent priced direct locked in now.

    • AUD to jpy is awesome for outbound travel.

  • Given some of the other Qantas deals lately this doesn't really seem great. Their US deals have been pretty good recently so I thought prices were on the way down.

  • 9-23sept departing from Cairns

    Qf 1200
    Virgin 970
    Jetstar 750

    • if i wasn't fussed and not have a family then yeah i'd suck it up with jetstar to save up costs lol

      • Flying qf econ will make a minimal difference. Prob cheaper to book out the entire row to more space.

        • yeah that can happen if your lucky too :)

  • +4

Australia has the worst airline monopoly in developed countries

    • You may have gripes with Qantas and/or the small size of the Australian domestic aviation market (international routes to/from Australia are more competitive), but it is clearly not a one-company monopoly.

      • -1

With a combined 60% market share, Qantas-Jetstar is the closest thing we have to a privately owned monopoly, outside the regulated utility sector. (Telstra, another Australian icon privatised under neoliberalism, is a distant second.)

        • +1

If you want to make a point about Qantas Group domestic market power (or privatisation?) in an international travel deal post, by all means go for it. However the point would be strengthened by avoiding hyperbole.

As you are aware, there is obviously no monopoly in the domestic aviation market. 60% domestic market share is considerable for one group to hold, but still far short of a % figure that could reasonably be described as monopolistic. Obviously 60% is not much higher than 50%, while being a long way off 100%, or 90%, or even 80%.

You'd be much closer to the money if you had been talking about NZ, where Air New Zealand apparently holds 86% of domestic seat capacity. According to the NZ Airports Association Association CEO in March 2024, NZ is the least competitive domestic aviation market in the world (developed or developing).

  • +1

Some of the flights ex Perth are cheaper with Singapore Airlines or Cathay. I would fly them over a mix of Qantas/JAL.

  • Checks out, Perth is the cheapest, because you're only on a Qantas flight for half the journey haha

As another comment said, still cheaper with SQ or CX.
