No, Dylan. You don't need another emulator box you'll never end up using after the first week or so of screwing around fun has ended.

  • Seems the new Apple TV is going to be released soon

  • Can I run Kodi on this thing? Would be my first Apple product so no clue. I know Apple is quite limited software wise?

    • I didn't think so. I run vlc to stream from a nas, not as nice but gets the job done. I think jellyfin works on this

    • There’s no Kodi app but its arguably the best plex client available, not to mention its other streaming and smart home credentials. Obviously it wont be as good if you’re not in apple land but its easily worthy of this price for streaming and interface alone.

Just get the ethernet version as its the more capable device.

You can use Infuse, if local streaming is all you are after, Not free though.

      • You can side-load Kodi if you buy an Apple Dev account.

        • $99 USD or $150.24 AUD (current exchange rate)

          https://www.google.com/search?q=Apple+Dev+cost&sca_esv=64160…

another stupid waste of money/expense just to sideload an app.

might as well just get a raspberry pi or nvidia shield for kodi (with true freedom to do what yo want)

          • @pinkybrain: Agree, I get it for free thanks to work so it's a meh to me.

I have both RPi and NSheild and can tell you the Apple TV absolutely smokes them on UI (especially the RPi) and overall speed, especially running Kodi.

            • @massafiri: UI means not much if there is no freedom to do anything other than what Apple allows you…
RPI is superior in this aspect cos I can do anything with it.

Apple also limits the Apple TV, so you can't do much useful thing with it, even if it is powerful

              https://9to5mac.com/2024/05/20/tvos-restriction-game-apple-t….

How did you install Kodi on your Apple TV?
Did you paid $150.24 AUD for the Apple Dev just to install Kodi?
              Or you hacked it?
If hacked, then the problem is if a new update occurs, the hack will be gone.

Rather spend that money on another RPI5..
I don't have issue with the speed of Kodi on RPI5

I actually contemplated getting Apple TV a few times when the ozbargain sale occur here
but ultimately didn't like the walled garden and hard restrictions that Apple imposed on the Apple TV.

If Apple removes the storage apps limits as mentioned in the that article I posted..
and also allows third party App stores and let you sideload your own apps and games
then this would truly be a worthwhile purchase.

      • Annual or monthly subscription which you need to keeping pay for life if you want to keep using it.,

I rather just get a raspberry pi 5 or nvidia shield for kodi (and can do whatever I want in kodi with addons)

        In-App Purchases
        Infuse Pro - Monthly $2.99
        Infuse Pro - Yearly $19.99
        DTS Audio $0.00
        Dolby Audio $0.00
        Infuse Pro - Monthly $2.99
        Infuse Pro - Yearly $19.99
        Infuse Pro - Lifetime $149.99

Thinking of getting this just to get around with the stupidly annoying password sharing hullabaloo with Netflix.

    • How does the Apple TV get around that?

      • probably airplay

      • Netflix app on appleTV does not have that nag, unlike firestick/chromecast. and yes Airplay too if you wish to off your phone Netflix app.

    • Exactly, one of the more reasons to jump ship, moved from Shield TV to Apple TV. So much better overall.

    • Damn it. Checked 20 mins late. The Ethernet version is already OOS.

  • Few dollars off all time low? Nice

  • [waits with baited breathe for 10am AEST]

    Thanks OP, happy 25th Anniversary

    • Me too, hopefully Apple stuff are "eligible" at 10am, otherwise a lot of posters (for Apple products) will be roasted LOL

    • Dang missed the Ethernet one :(

  • The deal is live. Got one. Thank OP.

  • Couldn't get an ethernet one. But got a non-ethernet one.

unless you're using it as a home hub, the 64gb is good enough

  • OOS Already ???

  • Didn't expect the stock will run out in like a minute.

  • Wanted the ethernet, but immediately OOS. Bought the 64gb wireless instead. Did anyone actually get the ethernet or just have to settle for wireless?

    • +1

I got an ethernet one but checked out in less than 20ish seconds.

    • +2

Yeah bought that too. Been using my other Apple TV with wi-fi only since there's no ethernet plug in the room and it's been going fine as room was very close to the router anyway. So realistically I don't need it.

  • 128gb, Thread Support and Ethernet is nice for the extra $20 however not necessary if you're only using this for streaming / casting and not gaming or as a home hub?

  • Is it safe to use this to watch Netflix?

    • +1

      Safer than most SmartTVs.

I actually don't connect my Smart TV's to the network and use Apple TVs. Read too many stories of hackers using Smart TV's to gain access to networks.

      • Never heard that….

        • Smart TVs are dumb. Often have some crappy Android OS that rarely if ever gets updates, exposing them to vulnerabilities.

          • @PainToad: I see.

          • @PainToad: Also they are littered with data mining for advertises and resellers.
TV manufacturers actually get paid to put all this crap into their TVs.
Hence why not many 'dumb' TVs exist, its more profitable to add rubbish to it via Android.

        • +1

Smart TVs and other common smart appliances (collectively referred to as 'Internet of Things'/IOT) are a major security risk. That's why they should be segmented off from the rest of your network. A lot of these devices are vulnerable and potentially part of botnets that take part in DDoS attacks against various targets. Hackers have also monetised these botnets funnily enough.

    • Safe how?

Back in stock for the wifi only version - just ordered one

  • Ahh, missed the LAN one. Hopefully comes back in stock.

  • ahhh I completely forgot about this when I woke up. bummer.

  • Can these run Stremio? if not that a deal breaker
