I've been a long time lurker and this is my first post.

I've been on the lookout for a reputable dashcam with a Sony Starvis 2 sensor. I just got a notification from Camelcamelcamel that it's at an all time low price!

It looks decent based on multiple YouTube reviews but I don't know much about the installation hassle, so I can't comment on how easy it is to set up.

Price History at C CamelCamelCamel.

For those curious about a129 pro vs a229 pro.

However, if you would ask us which is the better deal between the two, we would say that the A229 Pro is the winner. Aside from having dual Sony STARVIS 2 sensors, its features are also upgraded, including Quad-mode GPS and Voice Controls.

Moreover, the HDR, Super Night Vision 2.0 and more advanced image sensors for all front, rear, and interior dash cams also elevate their resolution and protection all around the vehicle – perfect for 24/7 and maximum protection for fleets, ride-sharing services, and even personal use.

      What about the a139 pro?

      • The a139 pro is what the linked article is about though - a happy accident?

    • +1

Not sure when a229 pro will be on Special though, this price is good for a139 pro model.

    • Thank you. Seem.to really know your stuff. I'd love to know the best VIOFO to get. Quality and features over price. Just hard to tell which model is the best of the bunch in June 2024, so I keep holding off on a purchase. Thoughts on best VIOFO on the market if.price wasn't a factor? Thank you.

      • This one is the best at the moment.
If you want a screen, the A229 is the best.

        • +1

No. 229 pro is best regardless of screen

However, if you would ask us which is the better deal between the two, we would say that the A229 Pro is the winner. Aside from having dual Sony STARVIS 2 sensors, its features are also upgraded, including Quad-mode GPS and Voice Controls

  • The A129 Plus Duo also has a little discount at $226.19.
Cost aside, is the Starvis 2 sensor worth the trade-off of (supposedly) shorter parking mode hours?

    • A129 also has a waaaay thicker rear camera cable. Might make it tricky on certain cars.

    • Paid about $180 on Amazon for the A129 Plus 2 years ago, so must be a miniscule discount.

Techmoan gave a good overview earlier this year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVc0n0_WrXw

    • Wow. Techmoan. I subscribed to the channel years ago. Good to see he's still going strong!

I think buying this one is better: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0CJ9CWRVF.
    (Carpuride W903)
This one not only has a 4K front and backup camera that saves to a memory card but also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also features a 9.3" HD IPS screen. After the discount, it is only $289.

    • I don't need a random screen so it's useless for me

    • +3

No thanks. Just cause it's 4K doesn't mean it's better.

      No parking mode.
      No neat hardwire mode.
      Ugly cigarette lighter cable
Random screen sitting on your dash.

  • I have this in my car, hardwired with cellink neo. Video quantity is excellent. Previously had blackvue DR750. This one is much better than blackvue and cheaper.

    • Looking to upgrade from DR750S-2CH

Really tempted on this. Is it a compromise, some mention the A229 Pro up above

      • A229 pro has its own screen which I didn't want. I read somewhere the rear cam is better than this one.

    • Can I just replace the dashcam and reuse the hard wirings? Or I have to re-hardwire with something different? I have the DR750 hardwired as well but it really is not good.

      • +1

My one is in different car. If its usb c, I think you can replace just the cams.

  • Buy it.

    • When though?

  • Does anyone know whether the rear camera's image can be flipped horizontally in their live view mobile phone app? If so, would it work reasonably as a reversing camera mounted up high in the rear window of a van (not a sedan)? Or too laggy/bad viewing angle to be of any use? I'd rather not run cables to the back for two separate purposes..

    • I know you can flip the image on the rear camera for the A129 Plus, would imagine this one would have it too but cant confirm 100%.

      • Thanks! Is that via the A129 Plus' built-in screen (which this version lacks) or via the live view on the app (via wifi)?

        • Its a setting thats accessible both through the screen and the app.

    • +1

Yes to the first, no to the second (not designed for it), if you can't run a cable to the back, then buy two single camera ones

      • Cheers!

  • I’ve have Blackvue 750x and Blackvue battery. If I buy this can I still use the Blackvue battery? Does it have wifi to connect to my wifi dongle and view live stream?

    • Whats the battery voltage?

    never heard of this brand.

      You must be Amish.

  • Best value for money compatible sd card to buy for it?

    • +2

I use the Sandisk High Endurance which is recommended for harsh weather conditions (warm and cold temp in the car), as well as writing and rewriting for continuous use.

      • Thanks mate. I ended up going with the Max Endurance 256GB, which was a recommended "type/brand" on the Voiofo website. It also says that the High Endurance is not recommended

Does the video quality matter that much? As in a 1080p video would clearly show who was at fault in an accident.

Or do ppl need a higher res image quality to see any specific detail?

    Just curious.

    • Yes, but also frame rate, no point having a low res camera if you can see the bstd who hit you and drove away. in my opinion, 1080p minimum, 2k sweet spot, 4k overkill

    why I'm seeing $497 here?
