That is cheap as chips 🍟

Inflation has hit chips hard. 🥲

Weary? Have a rest then - after be wary. ;-)

      • +14

Their defiantly appears to be some confusion about weather it's weary or wary.

      • +4

Unfortunately the cautious nature of being wary has made me weary. (Do love a good typo in the morning)

Friend of mine bought one of these Aldi Bauhn tv deals approx 18 months ago. Worked fine for 18 months until panel completely died all of a sudden. That’s when you find out their warranty is 1 year and that ALDI are notoriously difficult to get anything back on, the ACCC line doesn’t go very far.
Additionally, the OS is Ok but missing some Australian apps. Panel is big but nothing special with respect to colour/clarity. Sound is poor tinny.
People get sidetracked by 70” for $630 Wow, but in reality it’s a false economy paying $630 for a very average short life tv

    • 1.5 year lifespan for a TV. Pathetic. Poor QC.

      • +2

still running my 15 yo dumb tv Soniq plasma (although the remote died a while ago). couldnt imagine a tv dying so fast. bit of a concern

        • +5

13yo Panasonic Plasma here. It would cost thousands to replace it with something that equals the picture quality.

          • +1

@Rod71: 16 year old Panasonic plasma here, used daily (but only when the sun is on the panels).

          • +2

@Rod71: I still have my 50" Panasonic Plasma.

It looks so good compared to regular TV's and I don't know why, its a shame its too small to use anymore.

The only thing that looks better to me is OLED.

Got room for another in the club?

2010 dated Panasonic TH-P50V20A here, concur with your sentiments. Other than power usage & issues with bright rooms, it still works great. 4K isn't a big interest as everything onhand in media library is 1080p. With a Google TV dongle etc is very capable. Have a bunch of gift cards at JB slated for replacement TV but still can't justify pulling the trigger.

The e-waste from the Aldi level disposable TVs is a very slept on issue.

            @Rod71: 65" VT60 here!

Change the IR led on the remote. $1 for 10 off eBay. 2 wire legs …

Remote will be back in action

          • @tunzafun001: thanks but my kids effed up the battery terminals and smashed a few of the buttons :) its beyond repair. we just use the manual buttons on the side till we eventually upgrade. probably could get a replacement remote but its not been that much of a hassle really

            • +1

@perfectlydark: Ah… children…I understand. The generic Kmart remotes / Logitech Harmony remotes are handy if in a pinch.

Also, I got given a "Polaroid" remote at Big W to check the menu options…. I pressed a button and a JVC, Ecko and Polaroid TV all changed at the same time (same remote).

      • +1

the ACCC line doesn’t go very far.

??? worked for me with 3yo Aldi TV

      • Turn the backlight down as low as you can go without effecting the picture much.

Will use half the power and last forever…

Based on my sub $600 Chinesium 4K OEM TVs I bought in 2010.

P.S. Big W/ Woolies are now selling 65" Aiwa TVs for $599 (no chance of them being original Aiwa quality). Alternatively the TCL 65P745 around $600 is great bang for buck.

PPS. Newer gen TVs now come with soundbars/ speakers built in….circle of life

Probably a different model but if it was the same your friend could buy another one & return the old one with the new receipt and box during the 60 day satisfaction guarantee.

Spoken in the true ozb spirit

      • Thats a fraud, and shouldn’t be encouraged

        • +6

So is refusing a warranty claim on a TV less than 2 years old. As professionals we shouldn't let stores get away with it.

I'd recommend to know your rights before making a claim.

          • +3

@WatchNerd: I am not defending them. But we should go the legal way to pursue our rights. Their refusal of warranty doesn’t entitle us to go the wrong way and do something fraudulent that may have its own consequences if caught.

          • @WatchNerd: Warranty is 1 year, plenty of products only have a 1 year warranty.

You can hardly argue this is a "premium" TV meaning that the product should last longer.

The arguement for Apple products needing to have 2 years warranty was because it was a premium product.

I do agree that the e-waste is terrible but targetting a cheap Aldi TV when we are all buying cheap china junk we know will go to e-waste soon, we can't really complain.

            • +2

@samfisher5986: If bought with a credit card they often include an extra 1 year warranty…my NAB visa does.

            • +1

@samfisher5986: Minimum 2 years for phones, 3yrs normally for TVs. Doesn't matter if it's Apple or a Plum …again, minimum. A OLED will be more like 5 or so. The ATO effective life is a good guide for expected warranty.
You want to sell a product in Australia, then make sure it will last the minimum ACL warranty periods.

Doesn't mean you can't sell plums, just you might be replacing them a lot.

They can refuse warranty, but if the customer complains (and is right), then the customer will get a repair, refund or replacement and the business will pay the $550 (or whatever it is these days for processing of the complaint).

Risky strategy, but plenty of businesses are taking their chances.

Counterpoint - both my friend and I bought 4k TVs from Aldi about 5 years ago when they were on special, and they're both still going fine. I use mine with a Chromecast though, as the webOS doesn't have the functions I want.

      • +2

Ours too is still going strong. 85" Bauhn, around 3 years old. Slow OS so we use a Firestick.

    • my 32" Medion TV has worked perfectly for 9 years (haven't used it for the last 2 as it is in storage)

my 60" Bauhn UHD TV from 2018 is used daily and working perfectly.

  • They can be good. However make sure it supports HDCP.

I had a 55" version of their TV that didn't… eventually pretty much all 4K content wouldn't play as the apps now needed HDCP support.

    • I don't think thats HDCP, thats either not supporting the encryption required or not being a 4k certified netflix TV.

  • Do any of these cheap TV's come with Android anymore? WebOS seems to have taken over.

  • +2

    Landfill.
And expect to have to get onto consumer affairs/fair trading when it fails after the woeful warranty.

    • Not really, they are the same actual panels (My 'Vision' branded TV is a LG VA panel).

A lot of the power boards etc are generic.

The 4K picture will be brilliant.

BUT… they are built with no setup procedure. So backlights are maxed (which makes them die quicker), and the upscaling, motion processing boards are …not there.

Set it up right (backlight…cough) and they will last fine. But the proprietary 'nice image' stuff most likely won't be there.

Left as default, and simply adjusting the brightness…get the skip ready.

Source then 2,5,8,0 often has the main service menu for setting up (if you can't find it in the normal settings).

Use a power meter to make sure you are adjusting the backlight. Adjusting brightness has little impact on power consumption, the backlight changes it dramatically..

  • I purchased an Aldi TV, but it stopped working after just 11 months. Fortunately, I was able to get a free warranty repair. However, the TV's backlight failed again after only 4 years. Based on my experience, I would advise against buying an Aldi TV.

    • +1

Cheap / generic OEM tvs ALWAYS have the back light driven through the roof.

It uses more power, and looks like shite…

Can't emphasise this enough..turn down your back light. Will last forever, use 1/3 the power and the blacks will be….blacker.

Never had a TV die…ever..none..nada. I own a Vision, Voxson, Omni (big names there), and Panasonic. All 10+ years old. All work perfectly.

      • I never thought of this. That's a great tip. There's certainly an element of luck involved too.

      • I have a 2019 55" LG with the picture washed out with blue tones. everything i've read on the interwebz says is a backlight issue.
