Best Use of Flybuys Points

I've accumulated a significant amount of points, and was wondering what the best value use is for them? I'm guessing business class upgrades may come in the discussion. How about $ off just economy flights maybe.

I've used them in the past to get $ off from grocery but that's about it. If there's nothing, I may just continue to do that.

Can you share how you used yours?

Thank you.

  • If you like coles mobile (instore sim purchase) I think that is one of the best ways (unless you wanna covert to flybuys coles store dollars then use for like instore late night specials on that).

  • I would have thought cash them out for velocity points when they do the extra bonus points promos then trade the velocity for flights?

I’ve saved up a small stack too and religiously declining the points for $10 off every shop.

Not sure what I’ll do with it though. Don’t have time for flights. Maybe I’ll just cash them out in retirement in another 69 years for gift cards.

  • Do what you value most with them. If that's converting to Flybuys dollars and redeeming for groceries, then do it!

Personally, I find I can get more bang for buck converting them to Virgin points and redeeming for business class flights where I can get a value several times that for shopping (in the last 6 months, I've flown in business class from Sydney to Houston on United and Copenhagen to Melbourne on Qatar on Virgin points - it helps that I have a Citi Premier card that also generates heaps of points through PayAll).

However, converting to Virgin points requires three things: a desire to fly somewhere, available award seats to your destination and, if you want business class, valuing business class travel over economy (I do if using points, but not if paying cash).

  • I like converting them to flights personally rather than anything Coles related.

If you decide to go the Velocity option, remember that you will be swapping real cash for flights. If points did not exist and Virgin had a good sale on business class flights, would you pay cash for it? That is effectively what you are doing by swapping FlyBuys to Velocity.

    • Yes and no, sometimes velocity redemptions can have a value = 4c+ per point.

On the 13 October you can fly first class on Qatar from Doha to Paris for $9000 Aud or you can use 78000 velocity +$57 dollars.

$9000 on Qatar or $785 at Coles

      • Stupid question but, how do you find flights to use the Velocity Points on? I've used them for Interstate flights before, but not international.

        • On the Virgin Australia website. Just switch the tab to “use velocity points” this will unlock international airports in the search tab.

        • seats.aero is a good way of checking seats where there's award availability

  • I'm using them for coles and bunnings. Sure i could get business class flights but i wouldn't usually pay cash for that and just go economy.

  • +2

Convert to velocity point so you can book business class flights

  • Keep in mind you can use them as flybuys dollars at Coles. Although not as fun, it can simply mean you get free groceries for the amount of points worth you accumulated. You can also spend your points to get gift cards to use in other shops.
