For context, here's an excerpt from that article:

This behavior isn’t unique to Google either; Samsung and Apple also engage in similar anti-consumer conduct. For example, in the report about Samsung mentioned earlier, it was found that Samsung requires independent repair stores to disassemble a customer’s product if it has a non-OEM part.

So your choices are then to work buy a Chinese phone or buy from the big 3 but don't send your phone to them if you've used an OEM part?

        • Why would you be sending your phone in for repair after doing a self repair anyway? I've replaced phone screens plenty of times, never thought i would be keeping the warranty after doing that.

Edit: Still, pretty stupid to claim you will not return the phone. I'm guessing they will but at your cost.

          • @Duff5000:

I'm guessing they will but at your cost.

Yeah sounds like click bait internet 'journalism'. If I had to guess I'd say there you are agreeing when you send it back to say it hasn't been tampered with. This is fairly standard with warranty repairs. And if it turns out you are lying, the offer of free postage offer is rescinded. But click bait gets clicks.

      • +1

        it gets worse

        For who?

What is the number of people modifying their phones with custom parts, then sending them back to the manufacturer for warranty repairs?
        For the 99.99% of customers that don't do that, it's a non-problem.

      ??

A few years ago, Google rolled out the innovative call screening feature, which unfortunately wasn't available in the Middle East where I reside.

      Works here.

video Boost feature will also be limited to the US.

      Works here also.

People are also mentinoing Google Assistant summarize feature is also exclusive to US .

Just tried it, also works here.

      • automated screen calling isn't here. same for wait times and direct my call.

        https://support.google.com/assistant/answer/14163109?sjid=51…

mentions US only. maybe it does work elsewhere.

plenty of stupid google decisions to remove/limit features. (i.e. removing 360 panorama in pixel 8s)

        • automated screen calling isn't here.

Yes it is. I have used it a bunch of times.

mentions US only. maybe it does work elsewhere

I literally just told you i tried it. It works.

same for wait times and direct my call.

No idea what that is but given everything else maybe you are wrong about that also? Not features i have ever heard about anyway.

          • @Duff5000:

maybe you are wrong about that

not sure why im putting in all this effort. if you enjoy your phone, good for you.

automated screen calling doesn't exist in australia. fact is you don't know the difference. manual means you press buttons and google talks. automated you don't touch anything.

summarise: this feature only works if you don't have gemini enabled because gemini and GA cannot co-exist. and even then you are forced to use chrome which i have no idea why any sane person would.

if you have no idea what features i'm talking about, maybe because they aren't available in australia?

enjoy your 7 years of software updates only the new phones gets new features.

            • @askbargain: call screening certainly has been working here for years, on my pixel 6. I would consider it automated, in that I get a text transcript of what my phone is telling the caller, and see a live transcription of their response, and then can decide how I want to respond.

I don't really understand how much more it could be automated, as I wouldn't trust the phone to make the ultimate decision about whether to route the call to me, or whether to hang up.

              • -1

@nicois: if that is what you consider automated, then stay ignorant. if you don't trust your phone to make the ultimate decision, that is a you problem.

            • @askbargain:

not sure why im putting in all this effort.

Thats the problem, you put in no effort, no comment, just a link to a page with a heap of stuff that was not correct.

It claimed: No call screening, video boost or summarising.

automated screen calling doesn't exist in australia. fact is you don't know the difference.

It doesn't help if you call it the wrong thing now does it? If you were more specific maybe id have know what you were talking about. What you first linked to said there was no call screening. That was wrong. "automated screen calling" sounds like you were just making the same claim again.

If you said only US gets 'automatic' call screening where au has to manually start the call screening then sure. Looks like we dont have that. Minor difference.

if you enjoy your phone, good for you.

My view isn't really relevant. My point was your original link was basically completely wrong. If you are going to criticise/complain about a product. At least be accurate.

              • -1

                @Duff5000:

It claimed: No call screening, video boost or summarising.

in the middle east. i didn't write the post. why are you taking it so personally lol

not sure why you can infer so much from a link. my link merely says that google restricts many features to US only.

                Minor difference.

it really isn't, but if this is how you cope.

                At least be accurate.

when was I not accurate? The only thing I haven't been accurate is calling it automated instead of automatic. That's a minor difference.

                was basically completely wrong

                more coping language.

summarise this only works when you use English US and not English Australia just saying.

                • @askbargain:

when was I not accurate? more coping language.

You link says a heap of main features are US only. That wasnt correct. Not hard to understand really.

That isn't "coping'. I dont care to defend a phone brand, only correct literally the first post on a deal that had misinformation.

Some minor features being US only? Valid criticism. Almost all spam calls are already filtered out for me anyway. About once a month i use the manually started call screening and it works pretty well. Not a big deal IMO.

calling it automated instead of automatic.

You were calling it "automated screen calling" instead of "automatic call screening". One of those doesn't make sense.

summarise this only works when you use English US and not English Australia just saying.

Chrome is set to "english (australia)" and its working for me. Other than today i dont think i have ever used it though. Maybe some features come to US then to us shortly after.

                  • @Duff5000:

says a heap of main features are US only. That wasnt correct.

i've listed plenty. you have said they are minor. yet they are advertised heavily in US which leads to your youtube reviewers talking about it. here's one more: body temperature sensor.

just don't go to a country where car crash detection is not enabled and get into an accident :)

    • Can't beat this offer 7 months ago…

Yes you can, becasue that offer was 7 months ago and renting a time machine costs more than you would save.

  • I need to get my other half a new phone desperately. Had an eye on the 8a at $849 - is there $250 more phone in the pro for a casual user?

    • Yes.

    • You can get the 8 for 800 or $749 from amaysim.

      • JB HiFi would match that price I assume, if it's outright?

        • It's easy to try.

          • @frondono: Yep, sure is. It's still a bit too expensive for me, I'll probably have to wait until the Google 9 series is launched.

    • you must of missed out 8a was like $349 after fake trade in credit $300 and $200 JB gift card

for the casual user you don't need the pro

Will just be that must've sounds like must of. Happens with a few other 've contractions as well.

                  • @Duff5000: Haha yeah I gathered that's what confuses some people, but surely if they lay it out in full, it's pretty easy to tell "must of" is impossible to have any meaning? :p

                • @keejoonc: I think it is "most of" as in "most of the things I hear in ozbargain nowadays have something to do with robbers or illiterate bogans"

  • +1

Not worth it. Pay a bit more and get the S24 series on sale.

    • for an inferior camera and software in general?

      • +1

But faster performance and better thermal management. Also, Samsung software is not bad these days.

      • +2

Pixel cameras are fine, don't see the hoo-haa. If it's better it won't be by much.

Pixel software is buggy as hell. Not to mention vastly inferior chipset. There's micro stutters just from using the phone, changing between apps etc.

And the biggest of all is the mediocre battery life.

I've given pixels a go now and it's fine but they are really charging a premium, particularly for the Pro models. It just doesn't feel flagship.

Source: former pixel 7a and current Pixel 8 Pro owner.

        • +1

I haven't had a single issue with the software on my 7. First Pixel I've owned and went to it after years on iOS.

          • +1

@The Almighty Dollar: It's just not very smooth. Not sure if it's the tensor chip inside.

Phone locks up here and there. Suprised you haven't run into it as I have seen people post about it alot.

            • @Circly: Have you set the screen to it's highest refresh rate? They come gimped from factory. You might be able to speed up animations too, so it feels more responsive.

        • +1

I'm a Google phone owner from the Nexus 6P days. Have owned Pixel 2XL, 4XL, 6Pro and now 7Pro.

I have been very tempted to jump to the S24 Ultra, the design and hardware look amazing, but I've also never owned a Samsung phone.

I've had a s24 Ultra in the cart in the Samsung store for a couple weeks now but the camera issues and lack of some Pixel features like Now Playing, Call screening/waiting among othjers has stopped me from pulling the trigger.

          • @chiprillis: I've turned off now playing and stuff like AOD (and use 4G) to conserve battery lol.

No point having these features if my battery dies too quickly.

The Ultra will feel like a real flagship, although it's more pricey, just need a good sale.

            • @Circly: How much screen on time are you getting? I am almost never below 50% by the time i put my phone on to charge at night.

I may just not use it anywhere near as much though.

              • @Duff5000: Well it's nearly lunch and I'm at 50% with 2hrs SOT.

I usually start charging my phone by 3pm at work so I don't have issues at night.

But 5-6hrs is the maximum SOT with mobile data.

You get bad days like today where the battery just tanks.. Other days you can get the 5-6.. Which sounds decent but it's not competitive to other flagship phones.

My P30 Pro when new didn't need charging until the next day in the afternoon. Same usage.

I've only had my P8P for maybe 2 months.. What will the battery life be in 2 years?

                • @Circly: Yeah that doesn't seem great.

                  I unplugged at 7am. 4pm now.

78% with a bit over an hour SOT.

edit: I havent disabled anything either. 120hz mode, always on display.

          • @chiprillis: FYI Samsung has Bixby call screening. Now sure how good it is compared to Pixel but the feature is there.

    • +2

      +1 to this

PSA, from someone who's given up on Pixel after owning the 5, 6Pro, 7Pro, 8Pro - you get what you pay for.

Pixels only win on price and photo stills, nothing else. A few examples:

      • Clean software - littered with bugs and missed updates
      • Battery life - shit
      • AI - marketing BS, all processed via the cloud
      • Tensor - Modem/reception issues, thermals, lag. Raw processor performance coming in well below the competition.
      • 7 years of software updates - given Google's reputation of abandoning projects as they see fit + combined with the build quality on these - I'd be surprised if most people make it past 2-3 years.

Save a bit more and go for the S24 or heck even any of the S23's or an iPhone. Don't be lured by the price.

      • +1

Save a bit more and go for the S24 or heck even any of the S23's or an iPhone.

No thanks. Nothing you said reflects my experience. I buy Pixels (On my 3rd one now) when they go on sale so can pick them up for about $600-700. There's no Samsung or iPhone that comes close to that bang for buck.

Don't be lured by the price.

Why not. It's the best B4B phone there is IMO.

      • +1

Agree. I've only had the displeasure of owning a Pixel 6 Pro, which was returned to JB Hifi after 3 months, but unless I hear from actual users that the Tensor chip has improved significantly, I would never even think about buying another Pixel. It was a dog's breakfast.

  • +1

I’m tempted by this coming from iphone 13 Pro. I’ve read battery issues with Pixels in the past. Is this still a thing?

    • +1

Drains alot on mobile modem. It's decent on wifi but still not competitive to other flagships.

      • I find keeping it on 4G is a hell of alit better than 5G.
But yeah it's definitely an issue when not in wifi.

        • +1

Sounds like I will pass going from the feedback in this post.

I’m not a fan of the Samsung ecosystem either. Will just stick with my 3.5 year old phone which still works just as fast, only less battery capacity after these years.

    • -1

In my experience, battery life is super good. Lasts me the whole day even on mobile data.

      • +1

Same here. I think the people that complain about battery either read too many reviews from testers testing them under extreme conditions, or are massively heavy users. For causal use they easily lasts a full day which is all I need.

  • +3

Wipe the OS, install GrapheneOS and roll with that. Lacks all the spying shit and battery life is great.

    • But then one can't use any banking apps.

      • +2

Almost every banking app works fine, use this site to see compatabilities (Last updated on June 3, 2024).

The major issue is that google wallet tap to pay doesn't work on graphene. You can still use tap to pay on a smart watch but that's a decision you have to make for yourself if you want one.

I would 100% switch to graphene or similar privacy-oriented os' like calyx if tap to pay worked.

        • Cool, thanks for that list!

      • Simply not true. I use a number and not once has it been a problem

  • have they fixed notification delays yet?

  • Odd that the Pixel 8 Pro is now cheaper than the non-Pro at JB.

  • +2

    Even cheaper here!

    • I wonder, would JB Hi-fi do price matching?
      Or maybe even price beat?

What would people prefer, to deal with JB for problems, or directly with Google Australia… asking for after-sales support context.

      • very unlikely they would price match when a code is needed

  • I managed to buy a pixel 8 pro outright with a $1500 JB hifi voucher that was given to me for signing up to a telstra $99 a month 300GB plan. This was late February in a south west sydney store.

That particular amount wasn't advertised anywhere online, online was showing like a $6-800 gift card or something.

So anyone looking to get on a plan it could pay to visit a few physical stores near you to have a look. I haven't been in that store since I bought it so can't say if they have a similar deal currently or not.

  • +1

    Sharing my thoughts:

Ive had a Google Pixel since the 5. Its been great until the 8 came out. Build quality isnt the same especially for a flagship phone.

Went to Thailand for a holiday and on the 4rd day just walking around all the lenses started to fog up. No contact with water except just the humidity.

Tried to dry it out with the entire silica gel packets business but did little to alleviate it.

Google support is sending me a device to swap out (it will be Auth Charged) but I plan to sell it on after that experience. Having 3 cameras under 1 sheet of glass is a recipe for disaster in terms of pressure and condensation.

    Bought a S24+ instead abroad.

  • What is wrong with a couple of 100 bucks' Nokia or Moto?

    • I had been using Xiaomi/poco for years.

Didn't really need a phone any faster than my poco f3 (which to be fair is way faster than a cheap moto or nokia). The main reason i went a p8pro was the camera setup. It blows the cheap phones away completely, especially having a very usable telephoto.

Cheap phones also typically use slower refreshing lower resolution LCD screens vs the fast, bright, high rez OLEDs on something more expensive.
