A Game of Thrones: The Story Continues. 7 Volume, Costco (Melb) $33.99

440

I was in Costco this morning and this looked like it might be a reasonable deal so thought I'd let the votes determine if it was or not.

A Game of Thrones: The Story Continues: A Song of Ice and Fire: 7 Volume.
Cheapest on Booko was $59.11 delivered when I last checked.

Book blurb:
Three great storylines weave through the books, charting the civil war for control of the Seven Kingdoms; the defence of the towering Wall of ice in the uttermost north against the unearthly threat of the Others; and across the Narrow Sea the rise to power of Daenerys Targaryen and the last live dragons in the world.

Dont know how long they will last so expiry is a week, could be longer or shorter.
They had a pallet load.

If you are not a member($60), dont know someone who is, or cbf joining up then obviously this deal isnt for you.

  • These collection boxes are going to get very wide in 20 years when the series is finally done. There's still 2 more volumes, with no guarantee he won't split another one into two.

    • +16

At this point, it's optimistic to think that he's ever going to finish them.

      • +6

Worried that he will do a Robert Jordan on us!

        • +6

If that happens, someone fast who actually gets things done, such as Brandon Sanderson might complete the series for him.

Hoping the TV series will inspire him to write quicker. If they catch up to him and run out of material to adapt, it will have to go on hiatus and the child actors will out-age their characters.

        • +1

Or the opposite could happen - sign him up as a writer for the show, and leave the books for after.

That'd be good, right? A book based on a TV show based on a book.

Hurry before Tyrion gets that growth spurt.

        • He's already had words with the producers/director/scriptwriters about what direction he wants it to go in, should he die.

        • So they would adapt with just a direction, and not the novels themselves? Is it potentially possible that the last 2 books turn out significantly different to the TV series (aside from the usual differences in adaptation)?

        • -5

Tyrion is not an issue because he's not a child, but Arya, Bran, Rickon, Joffrey and Sansa maybe.

        • Perhaps some of those characters die ;)

You know what he's like haha

        • There are distinct differences between book and show, but I mean the general direction is pretty much the same.

****[Possible spoiler alert if you haven't seen both series and read the first two books]****

For example, Arya in Harrenhal was a much bigger thing than was made out in the series and the two she named to kill weren't the same two in the book.

Also, how Robb meets his wife is totally different.

          Just little things like that.

        • Those are standard things that change when adapting one format to another. I'm saying if the TV series goes ahead without Martin's books, the differences will end up much bigger than that.

Or they cancel the show, and he will have that on his conscience.

          Whoosh!

        • Not just how they met, Robb's wife is different than in the books.

It's a shame that they don't stick 100% by the book, it makes people think that, if they changed it for the series, then that arc is probably insignificant towards the overall plot. A minor spoiler/inconvenience, but still.

The story could be halted as well , due to the author drinking habit

    • you mean there MAY be 2/4 more volumes if his alive to write them!!!

  • Good price, but its a pain in the ass to get there (and sign up or go with someone who is a member)

  • Hope they have it in Sydney Costco as well.. I'll go there on Monday to check it out!

    • They did a few months ago as posted here, good luck.

Different item but related so I'll post it here as you might be interested… the collectors Blu ray is pretty dam cheap pre-order [out on the 5th Dec] @ JB-HIFI this weekend.
    JB-HiFI - Game Of Thrones - Season 1 (Blu-ray) (Collector's Edition) $39.98 [+$1 to ship - don't think you can avoid it acutally]
    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/dvd/dvd-genres/tv/game-of-thr…

would make a nice gift for a fan I would think.

    • I thought R 18s were banned in Australia..? Yet that's the classification…isn't MA 15 the limit here or has the law changed?

      • +1

        You're thinking of games.

        • +1

Ahh got it - thank you for that :)

          Yay! Censorship!

We all know that always ends well.

    • If I could give numerous +1's, I would. That Collector's Edition looks absolutely amazing.

  • I can honestly 100% recommend this series - nearly finished book 3, part 2 and it's just fantastic - the storyline that is, the publishing…could be greatly improved. Getting towards the second and third books, there are uncountable typographical mistakes, the most common being spacing after a comma so it would read something like:

"he wasn't afraid, inno way could they harm him…"

It gets quite frustrating after a while, but you can't argue with the pricing here - I paid about $60-$70 for the same set. (although the girlfriend's a teacher, so we can get it back on tax ;)

  • Oh, I should add, OP: The books series is called "A Song of Ice and Fire", the first book (and the TV series) are called "A Game of Thrones".

    • A Game of Thrones: The Story Continues: A Song of Ice and Fire: 7 Volume
Tried to cover all bases in the description.

Searching for the subject I used seemed to give prospective buyers more hits from book stores for comparison.
Personally I just enjoy the content :)

      • Ohh - I couldn't see that from this page.

To me it reads: "A Game of Thrones: The Story Continues. 7 Volume, Costco (Melb) $33.99"

        No worries.

  • Bought this from the iBookstore for $45 a few weeks ago. This is a good deal for the actual books.

  • I was wondering how they got 7 volumes. I guess breaking a Storm of Swords and A Dance with Dragons into two and counting them as separate volumes is how. Officially, there are only 5 volumes. Some publishings break them into two volumes and charge double, some don't.

    • Yep that's right only the UK editions get split into 2 books.

    • The way they read makes sense because they have a prologue which wouldn't work as character POVs because there's so much involved with mostly minor characters undeserving of their own POVs and events which wouldn't work with character bias - I'm trying not to give too much away here, but the splitting them up aids the story in progressing much more easily.

I've heard unconfirmed reports that Cersei gets her on POV in one of them - haven't come across it yet though so may be BS.

      • Cersei has POV chapters in 'A Feast for Crows' though I find her story really quite boring and irritating. GRRM also starts including lesser known character POV chapters throughout the books, but they're titled something else and not with the usual character name.

        • Yep, just got onto that - "The Prophet" and similar titles…weird.

  • argh i bought this for 85 not three weeks ago. this is a really good price!

  • What the books need are photos to describe part of the story.

    • What?

      Read the books, lazy!
