Help Me OzBargain My Long Weekend at Thredbo

So, to preface this:

My dad's booked the accommodation, and claims "there's heaps of room for you, the wife and the kids to come stay", so….. that remains to be seen - but lets assume he's not totally in the clouds - that part of the long weekend is sorted.

I;ve already gone and done a weeks worth of shopping through Aldi's ski sales, and got a fair amount of gear for the kids (but not all) - snow (not ski) boots, jackets and gloves - no pants, or neck (beards lol) warmers, or goggles…. and for me and the wife same deal - winter jackets, trackie pants… thats about it.

That leaves me with:

What to do for a long weekend this weekend in Thredbo?

Plan to drive down from Sydney on Friday morning, stay till Tuesday (to hopefully dodge the coming home long weekend traffic)
If there's any skiing to be done, it will only be me (adult manchild), and it;s a maybe at this point.
kids have never seen snow, so they just want to touch / play / maybe to touristy things that don't involve ski's or snowboards, but would be down for toboggans
Wife is happy to just supervise

So, for the kids:
I've checked the passed they have available, theres wither alpine coaster on it's own (1 or 3 ride passes), or gondola for 3 hr block per day, or a "winter pass" that gets 1 alpine coaster, and the gondola in the same 3hr block, plus a leisure centre visit for the pool & slide
Unsure if thats the right play, or worth it (or maybe just alpine coaster?) - or so good i should get them 3 day pass?

And then for me… Same passes as the kids? Or do i want to Ski, and if so, just a day lift pass?
And if I do want to ski, where do I get myt gear, howe much of a premium am I paying renting clothes & boots & ski's at Thredbo, vs Jindabyne or Cooma…

so hard to choose!

Canberra Costco is your friend, far less hectic than Syd. Breaks up the trip nicely too.

buy or rent a Toboggan, find a hill with ice/snow
    walk up
    slide down
    repeat 100 times

Good point, should have clarified - 10 and 15

You've definitely captured the spirit of the OzBargain way with the 100 times walking, i'll give you that :)

I drove the kids (under 5) to Dead Horse Gap just up the Alpine Way from Thredbo Village. Had an easy slope to toboggan down and we made some snowmen and snowladies.
No one else was there, probably because a mini blizzard started and the wind and snow felt like a whip in your face.
We also picked up used Aldi gear off marketplace, cheap but need to be quick this time of year.

    • Now that's something I hadn't thought of - leaving the village for Toboggan purposes, interesting.

      • It was 10 mins drive away, well signposted and parking bays off the side of road.

Have you looked at the snow cams? It's unlikely you'll be doing any skiing.

      Kosciuszko looks walkable though.

I hope when you say trackie pants you mean waterproof ski pants?

Fireworks are good on opening weekend

    there's heaps of room

Unless you've got a whole house off mountain..I doubt it
