Health Insurance to Save MLS Vs Coverage

Hi All,

Seeking people's views to see what they have done in similar circumstances.

Due to MLS we are now considering taking up private health insurance and are in a dilemma. We are generally healthy but in mid 30s now.

I have looked at options and there is BUPA accident only cover that will set us off $2100 - this has literally no coverage and it seems we will pay what we will save in MLS for no good reason.

Then there is HCF which has a lot better coverage than BUPA for $2450 - while this has coverage, we may not ever use it but the loading will stop as we have never had a private health cover.

So contemplating options to see if we go with Bupa which is more like throw your money for nothing or we pay an extra $350 and get some coverage for unexpected.

Note - None of these provide coverage for what we think we might need in near future. Bupa appears to have a better extras pacakge for the value but not considering extras at this stage as have no use for it.

Seeking to see what people have done in similar situations and if the know of any other cheaper alternatives to save MLS?

  • If you are healty you can delay taking it for 1094 days.

you can be without hospital cover for a total of 1094 days (i.e. three years less one day) during your lifetime, without affecting your LHC loading. This is known as 'Days of Absence'.

    • Yeah we are way past that now lol

    • Can also go work overseas for long as you want without incurring loading

    • Thanks.. I used choice and compare the market already but good to know there is a govt comparison tool too :)

  • Do you have kids, if so get a decent extras cover.
