VEGAN THOUGH. The Stan Smiths in the normal colours being produced are vegan now, whether you like it or not. Definitely for the environment. Definitely not because they want to make a cheaper product but sell it at the same price.

I have a pair of these vegan ones and they seem to crease quite easily and feel quite plasticky. I don't have an old pair to compare it to but I assume it's worse than the older leather ones. If you like this design and colour scheme in particular, you don't really have much of a choice but to buy these.

20% cashback at Shopback also.

Stan Smith Lux also discounted ($138) but fewer sizes available: https://www.adidas.com.au/stan-smith-lux-shoes/HQ6785.html
The Lux version is actual leather. If you can even call white plastic coated stuff "leather".

that vegan leather is the worst.
Creases easily, is not supple, makes your feet stink and sweat with socks on.
If you are a vegan im sure you would be offended.

Thanks for the review. I always have the urge to buy one until I see the comments. Cheers.

Does vegan leather mean plastic produced using petrochemicals?

      • +2

        Of course

      • +1

Not always but almost always yes.

There are a handful of textiles out there that are leather-like and made from fruit skins or other plant material and are said to be biodegradable. Commercialisation of these is rare so it's expensive or has major drawbacks vs normal leather. Pretty much anything that's mass consumer and vegan is just plastic/fossil fuels. Yay greenwashing!

    VEGAN LEATHER?? So no leather

    • So some kind of vinyl

  • Stan Smith shoes are my favourite. Since they moved from leather they’re not as good, but still a great shoe IMO

Yeah as mentioned don't bother with the vegan ones. Spend a bit more for the leather ones. I got the leather ones last year and I'm pretty happy with them.

  • I have a few older pairs and always make sure I buy the leather versions, generally you can notice it with the leather grain around the laces, I've ordered online from stores saying leather uppers only to get the vegan plastic version and then return it, I think it was culture king's that also made me pay a fee to return.

these new eco friendly Stan smiths are awful. they are so tight, no comfort, and squeak. get the leather ones.

    • Agreed - had to return a pair they were so uncomfortable.

  • another reason NB > Adidas

  • Really weird that everyone is almost universally against clothing made from animal fur, but are absolutely stoked on animal skin shoes 👌

At the same time when people "almost universally" eat animals. If you are killing and eating them it seems quite reasonable to make use of the bi-product rather than throwing their skins in landfill.

      • Would it be reasonable to do the same with your pet dog when it dies? Seems like a waste of good labrador skin to not make something with it.

My dachshund is becoming a draught excluder when he dies.

Just remember to make the hot dogs from real dogs.

So now the original one is called Lux and priced higher, and the cheaper one is vegan leather and priced at the original's price?

Great way for Adidas to support the cost of living

    • +1

The Lux isn't the original one, it's a new model with that has slightly more vintage styling but is made of leather like the older models. The existing model just had the uppers replaced with vegan leather and so has been made worse.
