    🤨
    Wondering what chipset they use

    This is good for games
    Not for OS
I have a samsung 8tb sata ssd for all my games

    • That's the wrong model. I have a 2TB S770 as a laptop OS drive and there hasn't been any issues (after 2 months).

    Terrible terrible brand.

I bought two Fanxiang S770 4TBs the last time it was on sale, using one as a game drive, and another as a scratch disk for video editing.

The game drive stopped being recognised and became a brick 2 months after. Not recognised on multiple PCs and USB enclosures. Support was extremely slow with responding, and only after raising hell and threatening to open a Paypal Dispute, did I get a refund for one.

The scratch disk for video editing died after 7 months, reads/writes became unacceptably slow (<5mb/s) before completely disappearing off the bus again, only had 130TBW which is well within the endurance and warranty. Completely ghosted by the seller and could not get a refund; so I'm out $250.

Apparently this is a common issue: https://goughlui.com/2023/05/21/review-fanxiang-s501-1tb-3d-… and https://goughlui.com/2023/10/10/psa-ssds-with-ymtc-flash-pro…

Before you think this is something to do with my mobo, I've had a WD SN550 working fine in the same mobo for 2 years, and still working today. Also, to date, I've probably owned 15+ different SSD/NVMes and Fanxiangs are the ONLY ones that have ever failed on me.

well this answers my first questions …. some china cheap and nasty special ssd and they are!.

      • You're just paying for their R&D costs lol. A lot of Chinese companies don't have the engineering IP, so they get bankrolled to just push out cheap products and build IP/experience.

      • It really depends on the generation of nands. Fanxiang ones are known with issues even in China as they use the older 128-layer QLC from YMTC. Seems to be a design flaw in many batches of products.

However models with the latest YMTC 232-layer nands (especially YMTC's OEM brand Zhitai TiPro 7100 or TiPlus 5000 for example) are well received with extreme endurance tests over 3000TB of writing.

It's NAND and controller dependent. However, it is disappointing that YMTC never released anything to deal with the infamous 128L TLC/QLC NAND issue. Samsung would at least come up with a bandaid workaround.

While the latest gen NAND from YMTC appears okay, the Maxio controller does have an issue with linux (which requires a software workaround for 4TB model at least). Also, based on what Lexar NM790 SSD I have, it is clear there are multiple revisions of firmware. However, there is no easy / proper way to upgrade the SSD firmware with majority of Maxio + YMTC 232L SSDs.

          • @netsurfer: Quite common for PCIe 4.0+ controllers that MP tools for them are watertight (almost no leaks for DIY provisioning) compared to many PCIe 3.0 controllers. Most consumer brands will never ever update firmware in the lifespan of the products.

Innogrit IG5236 + YMTC 128L TLC (that infamous previous gen, rather than latest gen) combo.

Look Up / ChatGPT would neg any SSD with that combo (mostly that particular type of TLC NAND).

    • Ranxiana S101 SSD has what ?

  • This, or pay an extra $100 ish for a Lexar NM790 4tb with heatsink for PS5?

Pure OZBers, wait till NM790 4TB to drop to 2023 pricing.

Must have one now, you could consider.

  • I've got one of these in my laptop as a game drive. It doesn't fit with the heatsink attached, so it's installed naked. But if the machine gets too hot the drive will cark it.

It's fine again after a reboot (and cool-down), but not ideal.

  • Netac is better quality and not that much more. Have had one in a PS5 and another in a PC. 2 years so far and no problems. I don't think it's worth paying double for a "well known" brand. Those legacy brands are good for HDDs. SSDs are a whole new ballgame.

  • I purchased one of these 07 Nov, 2023 for use in the daughters PS5, still going strong with no issues at all, I also fit one of those Elecgear PS5 heatsinks at the time of install.

Just ordered another for game drive use in a laptop, I'll keep my fingers crossed it also works without issue and stays working.
