  • Are there any speed benefits of using XD4S mesh with it for a 100/40 HFC NBN, or is it mostly the convenience - easy setup/compatibility?

    • More for just range and being on budget. Prob more better deals but for 4 nodes, i'd set this up for large double story houses. The asus setup is pretty simple.

I currently use 1000/40 with an Asus 82u with 2 XD6S (ethernet backhaul)

Thanks OP. Going to use this as cheap guest wifi AP.

Hope it works out well, have recommended this before for an acquaintance (seems to have no issue),
Hope you can claim it for a tax refund XD

  • I have FTTP 100/20 and am currently running a ~10 year old Fritz!Box 7490.

2.4Ghz wifi barely reaches the farthest end of our house away form the router

Would this be a decent upgrade on the Fritzbox? Could also buy 2 as I have ethernet backhaul available to mesh.

    • Depending on the size of your house/land, the XD4s 3pack alone maybe a better choice

      • FTTP Box to main node, backhaul to another node that will be used alot more, and the third node possibly for backyard or other areas you may not use a lot but require that area to have a connection.

  • I have a ZTE router that I can plug my landline phone into for incoming calls. I also have an ASUS RT-AC86U. I would like to improve WiFi reception in the other side of the house. I tried connecting the ASUS to the ZTE as it has a more powerful signal but it's still not good. Would one of these ASUS RT-AX1800S work if I installed it in the other side of the house, connected to the RT-AC68U via AiMesh, which is then connected to the ZTE via Ethernet?

  • Sorry if it's been asked before but curious to know if this can this do wireless backhaul. Have been thinking of getting a 3 pack mesh system but I figured I need more ethernet ports. Currently I've got a 2 router setup, 1 main and 1 AP both connected by an ethernet cable. I intend to do the same in the mesh setup but I can't wire the 3rd router though hence the question. TIA.

    • yeah aimesh supports wireless backhaul.

      • I'm trying to grasp the lingo here.

Would "can this do wireless backhaul" mean "can this work as a repeater/wifi extender" (or "can this connect to a wifi network and share that network's internet to its own, separate wifi network") in the context of this device?

I understand wireless backhaul vs wired backhaul in the context of a mesh network is merely a question of whether a mesh can work without ethernet cables, right? Ie. there's not a mesh network that doesn't use ethernet cables but can't "do wireless backhaul", right?

I use this router in my home office as a 'media bridge' as Asus calls it. It connects wirelessly to the main wifi (Asus RT-AX86U Pro), and exposes its ethernet ports for local devices to connect to. It works well from my experience.

Pair it with the XD4S for more range

Again, why would I "pair it" with the XD4S when I could just buy another two AX1800S?
3x AX1800S costs less money than the XD4S 3-pack, has more ethernet ports and can still be configured for AiMesh.

At the moment, the XD4S-3pack is around $249: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/848931 which is slight more that 3x AX1800S.

So with the AiMesh configuration, you can set up 3x AX1800S as a wireless mesh?
I have just bought the XD4S-3pack becuase I want to set up a mesh wireless network, NOT wired Ethernet.

So with the AiMesh configuration, you can set up 3x AX1800S as a wireless mesh?

Yes, that's exactly what AiMesh is for. The XD4S is no more capable than the AX1800S.

I did the same setup by connecting 3 Asus's routers as AI mesh. I'm sure you wont regret it.

    • I have 2 ASUS connected via air mesh and Ethernet over power.. works fine !

You can also do wireless air mesh.

@jasonxc, @Be Happy, @skinny, thnaks guys. You have convinced me to go for 2xA1800S (or 3x) set-up using ASUS aimesh. I wish I knew this before. I had a bad experience trying to set up a wireless mesh using different brand of routers. And all failed miserably.

  • Thanks OP. Got mine via eBay and after pay 10% off coupon.
Total for two landed with eBay plus express shipping is $142.20

MediaTek, so unfortunately not supported by Merlin.

  • How does this compare to a tp link archer 1800?

    This is OOS

Clicking on the link shows a page with:

    Temporarily out of stock.
We are working hard to be back in stock as soon as possible.

There are no offers that can be purchased for the title price of $80.80

idk what link you’re clicking, but it is still in stock
      https://amzn.asia/d/9rZHz9x

      • Wow. You are right - with a catch.
When I load the page in Edge, it says as I said above. If I load the page in Chrome - it shows in stock. How bizarre.
Wish I had known that before ordering from eBay instead of Amazon…

        • That is very weird,
Are you able to cancel ur ebay order as i had just posted a new deal with after pay making it cheaper

edit. also maybe try clearing cache and cookies on edge?

          • @Jonathankira: Nah, unfortunately I was too late, they zoomed it through to postage and I already have a tracking number lol.
The one time I was hoping a vendor would be slack on delivery…
NVM, still got them for $153 so cant complain, just hope there are no dramas with delivery cause eBay is a pain when that happens.
