ASUS ROG Ally X Hands-On impressions from Retro Game Corps

Comments

  • Retro Game Corps is the man!

  • I thought an introductory price of 1499 was somewhere in the realm of reasonable considering the original Ally is still selling for 1299 RRP. To then see a price of 1599 is wild. For a comparison, most of us got a Steam Deck OLED for 899 recently and the Ally X is NOT worth almost double that or 700 extra, to be specific. Add to that the controversy with their warranty policy as of late and I have no clue how someone in their right mind could entertain that price.

    • Rog ally z1 extreme is currently selling for $1099 at jbhifi. So It's $500 price difference. I also think it's way too much.

  • +2

The way ASUS handled the SD card issues gives me no confidence in this company and any of their products. We shouldn't be rewarding these companies for treating their customers like trash.

    • +2

I'm thinking the same thing. The Ally X is effectively the 'SD fixed' Ally. It has the same SoC but a few other improvements (battery, ram, dual USB-C).

The fact that ASUS has refused to recall the original Ally with the defective SD card reader is pretty appalling.

  • 24GB RAM and double battery is great. Double USB-C, M.2 2280, and better ergonomics is good too.

The $300 price increase and poor handling of their poorly designed first generation hardware unfortunately makes this new model hard to swallow.

I wonder why they didn't opt for the AMD 8840U?

    • +1

Thats why I opted for OneXplayer which has this CPU, 32gb ram and ultra fast SSD. But battery is smaller.

  • +2

Fair warning, Asus has been scamming some customers and even dared take on Steve from Gamers Nexus 😁
